Holmes v Spinks 1
Holmes v Spinks 1
Have just watched this fight after many years and thought it was very close.
So close that maybe Holmes could have won it???
I say maybe because I'd like to hear other people's Opinion and how they scored it.
Years ago I had scored it for Spinks and I know the second fight was even closer.
I'm not trying to stir up any Controversy theories!!!!!!!!

Same here. Spinks won the first fight. Holmes won the second fight.I Feel Fine wrote:I thought Spinks won the first fight, Holmes the second.
Holmes wasn't aggressive enough in the first fight, but went at Spinks and hurt him in the second fight. Holmes was shafted by the boxing judges in the re-match.
If you ask Holmes won the second fight by a bigger margin than Spinks won the first fight.

I thought Spinks won the first fight clearly. Holmes had a lot of problems figuring him out plus Larry looked old and tired. I was a big Holmes fan and was very disappointed that he seemed to have taken Spinks a bit too lightly.
In the rematch Holmes did a lot better and should have got the nod.
Yeah agree with a lot of people from a certain point of view.Robinson wrote:I had this fight as a draw. I have watched it twice in recent times
and scored it as a draw. So I suppose Larry falls short of beating Marciano's record in that one as well.
I can see people arguing either way. But I personally felt it was a draw.
The second fight I felt Holmes DID win.
watched it again last night and scored it again.
A draw was probably the fairest result but Holmes did indeed look old and tired and many of the rounds were so tight that it could have gone either way.
I do agree with you that he did win the second fight.
I thought Spinks was a clear winner in the first.
I have only ever seen a cut down version of the second on ITV where they missed out some rounds. Spinks was using the tactic of fighting full on for the last 30 seconds or so of a round. Many thought Holmes won. I should really get a hold of the second fight.

I've just watched both fights. I score fight I 145-141 Spinks. Holmes never figured out how to attack Spinks and late in the fight he spent entire rounds accomplishing nothing at all.
Rounds I gave to Holmes were 1, 5, 8, 9 and 15.
I scored the second fight 143-142 Holmes. I disagree with the person who posted that Holmes' win was even more decisive than Spinks'. I gave Spinks rounds 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 and 15. I think he turned the fight around effectively, but Larry's flurry in the 14th should have been enough to give him the decision.

I had Spinks ahead in the first. For the second I was in a room full of boxing fans, most participated in round by round closed scoring. After the fight we tallied the scorecards. It was unanimous for Holmes 17-0. Spinks gave away the first five rounds thinking Holmes would tire. Holmes won rds 6-15 by 6-4 margin on my card. I was steaming for weeks!

How long did Spinks last with a real heavyweight in the form of Tyson?Robinson wrote:I think Marciano and Spinks would have gone longer than that. Would have made an interesting fight :)
Im a hardcore Holmes fan, so I shall steer away from your Holmes hate:P Because it hurts my heart.
91 seconds---including the ten count.
Spinks was a joke as a heavyweight---and Holmes struggled with him.
True.
Spinks is an interesting HW, a great LHW. But not the most capable of
HW> Tangstad, cooney.
The Holmes fight was one of those things where I feel Holmes gets the draw, as the champ.
Your man Ali :P got better gift decisions in his career ;)
I think in any long reign alot of top fighters encounter guys who are great or not so great that just give them a hard time.
What makes Spinks unique and difficult is his jerky awkwardness that seems to auscilate the ranges and throw a fighters timing off.
I think a body punching mauling Marciano or Frazier would do better against this style as opposed to a moving boxer type like Holmes, Tunney, Ali.
That is why say a Tyson who no doubt scared the shit out of Spinks gets his 91sec KO.
Granberry may I ask how you feel Holmes would have done against a 172lb Billy Conn ?

I was going to abstain from Ali stuff for a while but I won't let you get away with that one robinson. Ali got two gifts against Young and Norton III, sure, and Holmes got his against Witherspoon and Williams. You might say the Witherspoon fight was close. It was close, but it was clear, and unlike Ali Holmes was neither an old nor out of shape fighter, and did not have the wear and tear Ali did. And Witherspoon was 150-0. Holmes also got the benefit of the doubt against Norton, which easily could have gone Norton's way, and Norton after all was the champion in that situation, if you want to go that route. If there's one guy who doesn't get to complain about bad decisions its Larry Holmes.
Holmes was not robbed against Spinks the first time. Close fight, yes, but I believe Spinks deserved to win that first decision.

150-0 is a damned good record ;)
I agree 100% Holmes could have faced better guys.
I do however feel he should have
Won - JUST against a green, up and down, though talented Witherspoon.
Drawn- against a LHW Spinks
Won- a very close exciting fight against a near end of his better years Norton.
The Williams fight I have not watched properly. BUT I shall. Then I will say yay or nay :p
Holmes has his faults and has had his gifts. I am a fan regardless and not an APPOLOGIST> I would love to see him fight more qulaity guys. Rematched those who troubled him. Regardless of this, he gave us soem great fights and I love his style.

15-0, of course.
I thought he beat Norton, I should be clear, just saying that it was a close fight that easily could have gone Norton's way. The others I thought Holmes lost, besides the second Spinks fight as I said above. He also shouldn't have gotten the decision against Ferguson, but he was so old then that it doesn't matter... though, then again, you hear people complain about Ali-Spinks II so perhaps it is relevant.
