"Clinton should win if he applies the pressure from early on. Tarver is essentially weak-minded and he gets nervous. He is mentally not the strongest person in boxing and this will be to Woods' advantage. I think Clinton will win and then he can fight me."
I think Roy has looked good enough in his last 3 fights to make this not a cringe worthy - Ali vs Berbick style fight. Its has intrigue, Roy will be brimming that Woods cannot beat him.
It was such a dominant display, he must fancy his chances to be too quick for him again.
Strange to see Roy pick Woods though - he has alot of respect for Tarver, perhaps its just dillousional but he is adamant that Tarver would give the best version of Jones a tough fight.
Woods vs Jones II is possibly THE fight I am most looking forward too involving a British fighter - thats if it happens.
Jones respect for Tarver is borne out of the fact he lost to him twice that's all. He has to raise Tarver's stock so as to avert the fact the third loss at least was due to him getting old overnight. By talking up the lacklustre Tarver it helps fool himself into thinking he can still carry on and isn't shot yet.

Tarver is weak minded true but how can Jones say that? He was too scared to engage Tarver in their third fight if that's not weak minded I don't know what is! That fight was there for the taking and he didn't do anything.
I believe Jones took on Tarver because he wanted to shut his mouth. Nobody has ever been able to force Roy to take a fight he didn't want.
Roy should probably have stuck at heavy and fought a couple of the less dangerous fighters in some defences, then retired, or moved down to cruiser for another title.
He's never been the same since, and he still looks prematurely aged, considering he's only 39, he looks terrible.

I'm only going on Thom Hauser here, but on Seconds Out last year he wrote a piece on HBO. Apparently RJJ wanted an "easy fight" after beating Ruiz, possibly at Cruiser. However Greenburg insisted that RJJ face Tarver, and the rest is history.

by roy's standards, it was just a decent performance. did you see him take apart sugarboy malinga and vinny paz? Those were absolutely dazzling displays, particularly to KO a tough nut like malinga like that, stunning.

Well, Roy has done as he wished throughout his career, so I would find it surprising to say the least if he was browbeaten into fighting Tarver.
I think he really got sick of listening to Tarver running his mouth to be honest, and misjudged just how arduous it would be getting back to 175 so soon.

In all fairness, "Only 39" sounds strange in reference to a career professional boxer with over 50 pro fights and godknowshowmany amateur bouts, James.
Let's put it this way: How many other current boxers 39 or over can still fight at world-class level? You can count them on one hand, with a few fingers to spare.
Good fight for Woods to gain exposure, making a mistake looking past Tarver though. I think $$$ was a big reason why Jones took that rubber match, he was dire, infact they both were.
Remember Roy said he made a conscious decision to lose the third fight with Tarver....so his father didn't get the credit

Vinny Paz fight is a good call, but mine was based upon Clinton turning out to be a decent LHW/World Champion. RJJ made him look like a journeyman.

The Tate fight is another spectacular faster-than-the-eyes-can-follow left-hook-fest - while the LH in question didn't instantly end it, it's probably my favorite RJJ left hook to watch.
The Paz fight is interesting in part because the most devastating punch is missed by the cameras, Jones' back blocks the view, you have to watch the way Vinny's head moves in the slo-mo to see what he got hit with while on the ropes after an initial left hook.
But back to the topic - a Woods rematch would be interesting, if Roy can look good and win impressively it might not be outrageous to consider a rematch with Glen Johnson.
