Amin Asikainen V Yory Boy Campas
Amin Asikainen V Yory Boy Campas
Not British Boxing related as such but i noticed Amin Asikainen stopped Yory Boy Campas in Finland last night in the 7th round. This of course has implications for John Duddy who went tooth and nail with Campas not so long ago and won a tight one. Asikainen is a good former European champion who lost a rematch controversially out in Germany to Sylvester.
But as i say he has been operating on the Euro scene at that level while Duddy is moving into a world title shot seemingly in the summer. This result has not really told us anything we didn't already know (Duddy is probably in over his head etc) but it puts things into perspective about the way title shots are gained these days.

I saw the fight between Asikainen and Campas. It was a good one. Asikainen is a warrior. He hits hard, can take the blow and he's getting more experienced. I would say Sylvester is one step behind him. He won Asikainen by using dirty tricks plus judge was acting really strange way. But that is only my opinion.
You're right about that, Sylvester blatantly hit Asikainen behind the head and the ref did nothing, it was Quarterone if i recall as the third man. Sylvester had dropped Asikainen in the 2nd though if i remember and was clearly ahead at the point of the stoppage so the ref's inept performance was uneeded.
Asikainen is an improving fighter and he lost his IBF ranking after the loss, i think he was maybe next in line for Abraham.

Sylvester was behind 59-55 in 2 scorecards after 6 rounds (Fact), he scored a kd in round 7, but was still clearly behind at the point when the punch behind the neck occurred in round 8. So yes, it was relevant mistake by the referee.
By the time the fight finally ended in round 11 Sylvester was leading closely in 2 cards and Asikainen was still 3 points up in the 3rd card.

My mistake, i didn't realise that, was just remembering from my own scoring i had Sylvester in a handy lead. I had initially forgotten Asikainen dropped Sylvester but he did and if i recall Sylvester was badly shaken as well. The ref was out of order not penalising the blatant rabbit punch landed when Amin's head was turned right around, it was sickening and knocked all the fight out of him.
I think he landed the KD punch right on the bell to end the round, and the ref chose not to call the KD. If I remember right, he even helped the badly dazed Sylvester to his feet!steve689 wrote: I had initially forgotten Asikainen dropped Sylvester but he did and if i recall Sylvester was badly shaken as well.

Sturm v Asikainen
I think fight against Sturm would be very entertaining to see. Asikainen is not as technical as Sturm but he gives everything,he is fearless and could take all that Sturm has to offer. Eventually he would got the chance to fire some massive hits. I hope it will happen some day..
Asikainen could outmuscle Sturm i think as Sturm is a quality technician but doesn't like the physical side of things. Castillejo won the battle (in the 1st fight) on the inside with his veteran experience and superior strength. If Amin can get inside and unload then the smooth boxing Sturm would have problems. Remember Asikainen packs a dig on him as well.

That might be. Although Idi admitted he had some problems inside fighting with Campas. To Amin, that fight was a good lesson of boxing in close range; Yori boy was/is very good in close range (73 knockout wins).
Unfortunately for Asikainen, other champs (Pavlik and Abraham) are superior in terms of strength and technical side. I hope he gets his chance and politics won't get his way.
