Hi Mike! What in the world is an "All Comers Division" and a "sub novice 15-16 year old division?" Sheesh! Just FYI - there is no "open" or "novice" in the JO (8-16 years old) division. Sigh.

I need to confirm the numbers but I think our association's policy is:
All comers = 0 fights
Sub Novice = 1-4 fights
Novice = 5-9 fights
Open = 10 or more

There's just under 60 boxing clubs in SE TX region and 415 boxers in the tournament. Also, this is the 78th local GG competition.

Yeah - well GG does tend to make their own rules.

Just for fun - The real rule is as as follows (and do NOT apply to the JO Division!):

109.2 Classification of boxers.

(1) The following shall establish experience classifications.

(a) Sub-novice class. A boxer who has not competed in a sanctioned USA
Boxing boxing match.

(b) Novice class. A boxer who has competed in 10 or less sanctioned USA
Boxing boxing matches. Said boxer’s 10th bout shall be in the novice class.

(c) Open class. A boxer who has competed in more than 10 sanctioned USA Boxing boxing matches. Said boxer’s 11th bout shall be in the open class.

Fowler-Hayes has been bout of the tournament thus far. Very dramatic bout was back and forth until late in the 4th round.

TinTin Ibarra matching up with Charlo in Saturday's final will be a fight between two of the best amateur fighters in the area.

Craig Baker put a whoopin on Quantis who was very out of shape. Baker is still very inexperienced, only 2 years and less than 30 fights. He's from the same gym as Joshua Garza. Coach Lopez teaches frame defense, blocking punches first with good stance and balance and his guys do long runs and are always in great shape.

I'm sorry to hear that Quantis was out of shape. I guess he moved or something since he didn't fight out of the Texas GG in the past. He was from Louisiana.

Mel - USA Boxing's rule is very poorly drafted. It states that a boxer is a novice if he has competed in 10 or less bouts and is open if he HAS competed in MORE THAN 10 sanctioned bouts, but then contradicts itself by saying the 11th bout will be in the open class. The 11th bout should still be in the Novice division since prior to the bout the boxer HAS NOT HAD MORE THAN 10 BOUTS. I wish they would consult a lawyer when drafting their rules.

It should be the 12th bout that is an open class bout. That is the same as saying a Sub-novice is a boxer with 0 bouts, but the 1st bout will be in the novice class.

Open 17-34 Championship bouts are tomorrow.

Today's highlights (IMO) were:

Miguel Flores (15-16 yo) - brother of pro Benjamin Flores, involved in best fight of day with Victor Sanchez. He's able to generate alot of power and uses a solid body assault.

Raul Marquez, Jr. (15-16 yo) shows the same tenacious attack as his father. He's up to 6-0 and had his first decision victory, but looked impressive and thrilled the crowd. Great body puncher and has very heavy hands.

O'Shanique Foster (13-14 yo) is something special. Looks to have the polish of a 17 yo open fighter already. His opponent Alvarado is very good and came to fight, enabling those who stayed for this walkout bout to see a great performance.

Nolberto Blanco (15-16 yo) put in a very good performance and is one of our better prospects as well.

Combs aka Zabo
Ibarra aka TinTin vs Charlo aka Twin was best fight in Houston, amateur or pro, since the Olympic Trials.
Magallanes lost controversially, very close, 3-2 with one scorecard reading 49-48.
Newton was ahead but Woods laid him out, RSC-H
Baker was star of tourn, IMO. Beat Q on Wed. and RSC in final.

I would think most local GG tournaments will be similar to this one, being the year after Olympic qualifying. Mostly young champions and new faces.
Last year's tournament included Juan Leija, Manriquez, Hylon Williams, J.T. Mendez, Omar Henry, Joshua Garza, Fred Allen, Clarence Tillman & Justin Jones.

Fowler used constant pressure and great conditioning to win.

You are correct about the new names and lack of familiar names. Most of the names I had recognized in the past are now gone. I do remember watching a video of Fowler giving someone a battle last year in a close losing effort in the Texas GG. Maybe he will win this year.

ringsidemike - keep posting videos with links as us guys up north can watch the talent in Texas. I see some of these guys at the national tournaments, but it is nice to see them in their local tournaments too. I know that sometimes a guy that could possibly win a national tournament doesn't even make it out of his local tournament.

Sorry I have them on my hard drive but havent cut them up yet. Will try to do it this week.

I just got back from the Reggie Johnson-Julio Gonzalez fight and have been following Travis Walker, Juan Diaz, and Chris Henry all in town about to have title fights.

TX state GG championships are in Ft.Worth 2/27-3/1

Also SE TX region took home team trophy at the Texas Regional Senior Championships with five champs. (shoulda had 7) Balance of power in the state has shifted to Houston, IMO, with Savannah, Weldon, Juan Lopez and a few other very good trainers maintaining great gyms.

I recently found a lost disk from the 2007 TX GG championships and recovered the bout between Charles Hatley and Jose Orozco, which was THE loudest crowd I've ever witnessed for an amateur bout. I'll get that online soon as I can.
