British boxers who have made it in the States

Post by JC »

I recently posted a thread on the British Scene forum asking if anyone had any news on Prince Naseem. This led to a discussion on his career, and it was pointed out that, despite his specacular fall, he is one of a very few British boxers who was able to make a real impact in America. Willie "Kid" Berg and Ken Bauchanan were also mentioned as British fighters who have done this.
This made me wonder, which British boxers have made it in America? Berg and Bauchanan were able to do so by consistently beating quality American opposition. Randy Turpin's shock win over Robinson succured his place in the Hall of Fame. Can anybody name any others, and which British boxer made the greatest impact in America? Any Americans who could give a Stateside perspective on this would be particularly appreciated.

Lewis was Jamaican born, and I don't recall, but didn't he box for Canada in the Olympics?

Actually Lennox Lewis was born in London...

His parents were both from Jamaica....

He lived in Canada from the time he was about 12 until right before he turned professional about 11 years

Well you could certainly make a case for Jackie Kid Berg who beat Tony Canzoneri, Kid Chocolate and Billy Petrolle...

As well as Buchanan who beat Ishmael Laguna and Carlos Ortiz ..
and Lost to Roberto Duran..in the US

And Lennox Lewis who has scored wins over a number of top heavyweights in recent years Including Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield..

Those are my three finalists in Order..

Lewis
Berg
Buchannan

Seeing as you feel Lewis is credible for this thread as he was born in London.

Surely, you must also consider James J Braddock, who was born in Manchester.

Actually, according to the Boxing Register,, James J. Braddock was born in New York City on June 7 1905...

And Lewis is entirely credible since he was born in London and has a 21-0-1 with 14 KO s record in his professional bouts in the US ..Thats pretty impressive

This guy deserves more than a passing mention:

Randy Turpin: only held a World title for 2 months, but he guy he won it from was pretty good. ;)

But Turpin didn't "make it in the States."
