Juan Lazcano, almost signed just a few final details to nail down.
Not a great opponent but should be an entertaining battle for a good few rounds if not the full route.

He isn't due a gimme at all, especially when he's expecting thousands of people to turn up to a stadium fight. He's had more than enough gimme's during his career. The fight will almost certainly be on ppv as well and I doubt there will be much to see on the undercard. It's going to be a shoddy event designed to line Hatton's pockets some more. All the while Hatton will be telling people he's trying to give something back to his fans, and the sad thing is a lot of people will actually buy into it.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:Heard the same. I love Hatton, but this isn't a great opponent by any stretch of the imagination. I don't even have him in my top 10 LWW anymore.
Harris owned him when they fought last year, but, as in previous thread, he is due a gimme.
He should be fighting Witter next. The fact is Witter is not a big name and he's not at the same level as some of the big boy's at welterweight. But he would give Hatton a tough fight and it's a fight that would be worth watching. Watching fights where your almost certain of the outcome before the first bell has rung is a joke.

Also, Lazcanzo lost to Castillo who Hatton stopped. Lazcano lost to Harris who Witter stopped. The Hatton-Witter situation is getting embarassing.
As mentioned to Autobarn in a previous thread, if you don't like his opponent don't go/pay.ArtOfWar wrote:He isn't due a gimme at all, especially when he's expecting thousands of people to turn up to a stadium fight. Hatton is due a gimme fight. Psychologically any fighter that gets stopped the way he did needs a confidence builder. If you disagree I hope to God you never become a trainer.
As jomo mentined yesterday, if this wasn't Hatton people wouldn't mind as much. Is Lazcano better than Gunn - yes. Is Lazcano better than Manfredo Jr - yes.
Enough with the fornicating Hatton bashing. It's fornicating boring!!!!
I'm getting to the point where, like jono, I'm embarassed by the amount of people sticking the knives in to a fighter just because of one fight and I may leave this forum for a while in the vain hope that the trolling stops.
British Boxing used to be a good forum, even the Current Scene lads were jealous at how we gave structured criticism and didn't resort to calling each other names and we were constantly going over new discussions and having a laugh. Now every thread turns into "Why isn't Hatton fighting Witter, mwah mwah mwah".
Talk about something new FFS!!!!!
Juan Lazcano is a 32-year-old Mexican-American who goes by the superb nickname of "Hispanic Causing Panic". He comes off a loss at the hands of "Vicious" Vivian Harris in a WBC light-welterweight title eliminator in Las Vegas a year ago - but Harris needed to finish stongly to make sure of the verdict in a bruising 12-rounder. No real disgrace, although Lazcano could have done with a fight since (by the time Hatton comes round, Lazcano will have been out 15 months) and Harris, of course, was subsequently taken out in seven rounds by defending WBC champion Junior Witter.
Long-limbed, tough, brave, aggressive, wear-you-down, cagey: Lazcano epitomizes the Mexican fighter. He goes to the body, comes on strong and is not akin to the rough stuff, but he can be outboxed, and the nippy, quick-handed Hatton will fancy his chances of doing just that in May, especially as Lazcano was outscored by one Jose Luis Castillo in 2004 - the man Hatton destroyed in four rounds last year with a body shot. Plus, Lazcano may have seen better days after 15 long years as a pro; Hatton, in contrast, looks right at his peak.
Based in Sacramento, Lazcano's best win is a thrilling 11-round stoppage of former long-time WBC champ Stevie Johnston back in his lightweight heyday in September 2003 (both men were on the deck). It secured him that showdown with Castillo for the vacant WBC lightweight title a year later but Castillo edged him out after 12 gruelling rounds at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and moved on to another Sacramento hard man in Diego Corrales; Lazcano moved up to light-welter and rebuilt with a good ninth-round knockout of Courtney Burton and a unanimous 10-round decision over Ben Tackie. He actually came close to stopping Tackie, two years after Hatton had failed to dent the Ghanaian in his own Manchester lair, but then looked horrible taking a split decision over Mexican 'opponent' Manuel Garnica, and while Lazcano looked better against Harris a fight later, he was outboxed in the last two rounds as Harris got up on his toes to make sure of the verdict.
You know, Lazcano, who has never fought overseas, once won 19 on the spin at lightweight (16 early) and holds wins over Johnston, Antonio Diaz, Wilfredo Vazquez, Juan Molina and Jesse James Leija (over whom he looked lucky to get the nod). He's lost only to Harris and Castillo in the last 10 years. He's lost only to Mexican Jose Manjarrez, Golden Johnson, Castillo and Harris in 42 fights.
A good, crowdpleasing if worn-looking opponent.

The only problem I have is if Hatton has only 3 fights left in him - does he have enough of a legacy to warrant a tune up. If Ricky wants to go down as one of Britain's true finest.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Ok for a comeback/tuneup fight, but this must be followed by a big fight, and prefarably Witter.
DLH is having one vs Forbes - but his legacy is cast in stone.
Plus - from a personal point of view - I don't see Ricky having any problems with Witter, I really don't.
For me the perfect way to round off a career would be Witter, Bradley (if he gets by Castillo) and then finishing it off with Khan. If Gavin Rees gets by Kotelnik - then there could be avenue's there also... maybe Rees, Lynes and young Paul McKloskey on the back of his excellent win last time out - he could seriously be in the world title picture in the near future.
If Ricky wants a suicide mission at 10stone 10 vs DLH after, then its his "nothing to lose" call.

Hatton is not this braver than the average fighter he makes out he is!
Lazcano is another lightweight is he not?
TAKE AWAY HATTONS WEIGHT ADVANTAGE AND STRENGTH AND HE SUFFERS.
Bully in my book!
(against PBF he had all the advantages with weight and strength, but he was still tumped down.)

Lazcano, then a Malignanni or Junior in the next few fights after that.
Losing to the best fighter on the planet hasn't made him shit overnight, though a lot on here seem to think so. He'd beat Witter IMO, and that of many others on here.
Why is Witter so bigged-up? It is really boring, he couldn't draw a crowd if I gave him three wishes and a piece of fecking paper.

How did he have all the advantages when Floyd is much more natural at the weight? He had those advantages for a matter of hours.DG. wrote:He has had over 40 gimmes!ArtOfWar wrote:He isn't due a gimme at all, especially when he's expecting thousands of people to turn up to a stadium fight. Your getting embarrassed? Trolling? Hatton has been criticized for years for the quality of his opposition (and rightly so), so this is nothing new at all. Fighters should take some flak when they take easy fights just to line their pockets. It's people like you who allow them to get away with it.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:ArtOfWar wrote:He isn't due a gimme at all, especially when he's expecting thousands of people to turn up to a stadium fight. He's not due a gimme at all. He's supposedly an elite level fighter, and he's had enough money making fights throughout his career. What crock of s**t argument is that. Enzo and Calzaghe fought two dummies, so now Hatton can as well? All three of them have fought more than their fair share of overmatched opposition, but that doesn't give them an excuse everytime they do it again.
Enough with the effing Hatton bashing. It's effing boring!!!!

It's a crap fight (if it comes off) that no one is really calling for. This business of making fights that have no real meaning to them at all keeps on happening over and over and over. That's what's f**king embarrassing. It's absolutely farcical.
Last year was a good year when the top names finally started stepping up to the plate mainly due to the pressure felt by the boxing fraternity from the rise of mma. 2008 should be more of the same. Hatton vs Lazcano/Hlatswayo or any other undeserving opponent they can dig up is a complete crock of horse s**t.
The few British boxers who make it to the top simply don't have the balls to run the gauntlet. They have one big fight here and there filled in by lot's of meaningless and frustrating fights.

At the end of the day everyone thinks their opinion is right, that's why they have that opinion. It just so happens mine is right and your's is wrong.
Had Hatton been through a tough career with lot's of opponents who had pushed him I might be inclined to agree with your way of thinking. That's not been the case though has it. He's feasted on opponents he and everyone else knew he'd beat most of the time and a fight with Lazcano is just another one of those. That fact that it's probably going to be a stadium fight that will get a huge buildup makes it even worse.
Lazcano is a smaller guy, who doesn't have a big punch and who was beaten by Vivian Harris in his last fight. Where is his confidence builder?

Too much use of the not a big name excuse In here when mentioning Witter.
It's not that Hatton lost to Floyd, It was how limited he was shown to be finally. Floyd Is not any more natural than Ricky at the weight either. Floyd was pushed back by Ricky and was counter punching Hatton's head off with pure skill.
The Ricky fans were calling the pretty one a runner then they finally see the light when Ricky Is beaten by Dr Checkhook(Yes, I know It was just a counter left hook, I'm attempting humour).

Witter stands a good chance at being a good Welterweight as well, the only big boys now are Floyd and Cotto. He should be fighting Witter next. Ricardo Torres was quoted in a Colombian newspaper interview that he was fighting an Englishman on May 24. There are no English fighters ranked at light welter by the WBO, so that would have to be Hatton, or a unification fight against Rees or Witter (not likely). Or the other good possibility, which is Torres is just talking crap that someone fed to him.
