Here's the deal - Ricky is much loved beats a pfp hall of famer in Kosta Tyszu, unifies against Maussa, fights at Welter (un natural weight), wins a world title, KO's Castillo and then fights the best fighter on the planet at a higher weight and loses!!

Seriously, whats happened to people? All of a sudden just because Hatton won't fight Witter right now he is the devil incarnate.

If he fights someone of the ilk of a Lazcano then fine - I think he is due an easier fight after recent fights.

It's not even in the same league of a fight like Bruno v Lewis or Benn v Eubank mate. Why? Because in those fights the public had heard of both boxers.

Nobody gives a feck about Witter. Nobody can be bothered to travel to see him because he is dour and is only now trying to act like he is marketable and a big draw. Sad but true.

Again, the career differences were brought about because one guy was marketable and one guy was not, it is as brutally pragmatic as that.

I've yet to see one person pipe-up as to why they support Witter so fervently but will not go and watch him fight. If this whole saga piques so many senses of justice why the inaction?

Does Hattons exceptional marketability give him the right to take the piss and avoid the fight that the fans want to see, whilst claiming hes having a homecoming fight for the fans???

Sorry, but I have no sympathy for Junior and don't by into him being hard done by. He had an opportunity on HBO against Zab Judah to put on a performance, which I believe would've made him a star, possibly bigger than Ricky, and he ran for 12 rounds.

Thats harsh, he had an opportunity at a weeks notice early on in his career against the next BIG thing, he should've been praised for saving the show not vilified for it a decade on

But Benn-Eubank and Bruno-Lewis were great for the general public, but not all that great for pure boxing fans.

I do think Eubank was the best English middleweight (ever), across-the-board, but Watson had already done Benn and Bomber Graham was about, so for boxing fans this wasn't even the two best middleweights in Britain fighting. But for Benn fans and the 'man on the street', the wait was exciting to see if this arrogant upstarts head would end up in the fourth row. Hatton and Witter are the two best 140lbers in the world, both British, all pure boxing fans have known of their rivalry since the 90s, etc, and they still haven't fought.

When Bruno, Benn or Eubank fought, it was like Ali or Tyson, it didn't really matter who they were fighting. This is historical, Hatton and Witter, Manchester against Yorkshire in a battle of the planet, two very different lads as well, great for us boxing nuts and the public would catch on too.

Wasn't that the Showtime network?

And didn't Junior take the fight on a few weeks notice? And wasn't Junior a novice pro at the time? And didn't Junior improve a lot after that loss, setting down on shots more and switching into an attacking counter-puncher?

a) Think you're right, as it was Tyson undercard, so unlikely to be HBO, although Ross Greenburgh has gone on record as saying they weren't interested in showing Junior's fights which is why I thought it was HBO.
b) No-one put a gun to Junior's head and said "Take this fight, or we're breaking your clippers so you can't put squiggles in your hair like Craig David". It was his choice. He's a big boy.
c) IMO it took Junior years to get over the Judah display, and, TBH, his 2 performances before the Harris fight weren't pretty to watch. I fell asleep during the Morua fight. However, I think the Harris performance was superb.

I don't dislike Witter, I love British sport and support it as much as I can, I even thought about going to the Harris fight, but I take exception to people saying Ricky is ducking Junior simply because he isn't fighting him next.

And before anyone trumps up and says "Why didn't he face him sooner":

1) Ask Warren, he had both fighters under contract after all
2) If anyone, before the Harris win, argued that Junior and Ricky had to fight, they sure as shit didn't say until Ricky's loss.

It depends how we define BIG fight, if its in terms of how popular the boxers are then nothing wuill ever rival Benn-Eubank and Bruno-Lewis, but if its in terms of their respective positions in their division and boxing ability then I'd put it over Benn-Eubank and Bruno-Lewis.

Eubank and Lewis were far better boxers than Jr Witter(though Jr just as awkward as Herol and Naz,more awkward than Eubank),and Benn a better fighter than the Hitman. All three better punchers than those two,too(though Jr can head punch abit). But if the Hitman picks yet another opponent worse than Witter(the 15 WBU opponents,Maussa,Collazo,Urango and a shot Castillo were),British Boxing should wash its hands with him until he fights him. If he picks another two opponents worse than Witter,fornicate him entirely I say.

It pretty much gave him the right, and impetus, to fight in the States then secure a fight with the best fighter in the world. He played the game and it left him firmly in the driving seat.

All joking aside you have to wonder. If maybe 10% (at best) of paying punters post on Boxrec (and most Boxrec folk are massive Witter fans) then there must be a massive market out there for Witter fights. Unless he is an Internet phenomenon. Like dating a bird online but not quite wanting to meet her in the flesh in case she turns out to be a minger.

I think the fight will happen. When neither man has an option but to make it happen.

Right now, as a Witter fan like you are, I'd be more concerned with seeing Witter eat what is on his plate, if indeed there is anything there after Hopkins decided it was not worth the hassle of fighting Witter for the prestigious WBC title.

Unfortunately the Harris win failed to set his career alight. I'm not quite sure if there is another name like Harris waiting in the wings.

I am primarily a British Boxing fan, but I suppose I am a Witter fan as well, but mainly because Hatton has drove me to it by not allowing us to see who the LWW in Britain (and now the world) is. I was more of a Hatton fan to start off with, but I find it difficult to support him because I hate his actions of avoiding Junior and robbing British Boxing of a monumental fight.

I'm a BIG David Haye fan and have been since he turned pro, if I'm honest it would have probably been a better career move for Haye to go straight upto HW and not fight Enzo as its a very risky fight, but I was still calling for the fight from as soon as it was pheasible as its good for British Boxing. Which is why I can't understand why 'some' of the Ricky Hatton fans are still saying that Ricky is correct in his stance, it's blind loyalty IMO


I don't like slating Hatton he seems a top bloke and has provided some good entertainment over the years, but its difficult to get my point across without doing so. RH's Witter stance is undefendable and inexcusable IMO

There were a few people who wanted to see it before Hatton lost, but the upsurge in interest post-Mayweather is all down to the fact that Hatton has said he's not fighting at welterweight anymore. That eliminates most of the big fights out there for him. Therefore the Witter fight has now become a much more enticing prospect since we aren't going to get to see him face Cotto or someone like that.

Apart from Honeyghan - I really can`t think of any off the top of my head.

Lewis was avoided like the plague by massive names Holy, Tyson and Bowe and beat 2 of 'em when they had the balls to fight him. Ken Buchanan was fouled and mauled out of his title by Duran, yet beat the brilliant Ismael Laguna twice (once in Laguna's backyard).

There have been very few British world champions who beat a P4P great at their peak..

Calzaghe hasn`t done it..
Naz couldn`t do it ..
Benn came close with McClellan & Barkley..
Eubank/Collins/Watson/Graham didn`t/couldn`t..
Lewis - like Benn came close..

Apart from Honeyghan - I really can`t think of any off the top of my head.

Lots of British boxers have beaten world class fighters who were at their peak .. though have they beaten P4P greats at their peak? .. sadly not

I don't consider Carlos Maussa, Luis Collazo and Juan Urango truly world-class fighters. Most (if not all) in the world top 10 would have beat them.

Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Iran Barkley, Gerald McClellan and Kevin Kelley all featured on mythical 'P4P' lists in certain years when it was an end of year poll in KO Magazine, whatever that's worth. But as for a British fighter beating one of the very best fighters in the world - I think Benn over McClellan and Collins over Eubank are two. You can't watch McClellan's previous performance against Jackson or Eubank's previous performance against Wharton without saying they weren't about as good as it gets.

Hatton didn't actually beat a world top 10 fighter in his first 39 fights. Yet made around £6million.

That is, without beating around, disgraceful.

He was very, very lucky to get Tszyu at just the right time, and still barely scraped by. Lucky, lucky guy IMO. I wish I could fight every eight months and make hundreds of millions of dollars.

Lets not forget he got most of his fans from Steve Foster Sr, Anthony Farnell and Manchester City, either. Lucky.

Also, I thought Bomber beat McCallum and Kalambay (rematch) - the best body-puncher ever (McCallum) and Kalambay the master at the slip-and-counter (better than Toney). McCallum also perhaps the most gifted and fluid fighter I've ever seen, barring maybe Michael Nunn.

Bomber made both look ordinary at times.
