Hennessy Sports Proudly Present Thaxton vs Romanov
Hennessy Sports in association with Golden Palace.net are proud to announce that British Champion Jon Thaxton will be fighting Yuri Romanov, the current European champion and Number 1 contender for the WBA title. The fight will take place on the 4th April 2008 in Norwich and will be broadcast live on Friday Fight Night at 9.30pm on SKY SPORTS ONE.
Jon Thaxton said:
"I’m over the moon to have the opportunity to fight for the prestigious European title, my promoter Mick Hennessy has delivered what he promised and pulled out all the stops to secure this fight for me".
"It’s going to be one hell of a tough fight, but I’m ready for it, I always keep in great shape but I’m mixing up my training with some great sparring. Khan has avoided fighting me and Romanov, is it because we are both too good for him".

i thought he'd gone a bit stale in his last couple.

This is a cracking fight for JT and a win will put him in a great position, I hope JT and Khan can get through their next bouts and setup a BIG all-British clash for the Euro title.

It'll be a far better contest than Khans formality against the piss-poor powder-puff pigeon punching penelope pitstop person

Good fight but I can see Romanov winning this i'm afraid. Thaxton will have to out do his Meager performance to win this and as has been said, he didn't look great against Stewart and Lawton

Just watched Earl-Romanov again for the first time a while - reminded what a tough SOB Earl is - he took plenty of flush power shots bang on the chin and just refused to go down. It was a fantastic performance from Earl but I have to say I really think Romanov blew that fight - he had Earl rocking and relling a number of times but I think his being out of the ring 15months caught up with him and he couldn't finish Earl off. Thaxton will have to be on top form to beat Romanov but as the Earl fight demonstrated Romanov can be outworked. But I dont think at this stage in his career Jono can do that though I love to see him do it - he deserves it. Also I'm not sure if he will be able to stand up to the fast, powerful right-hand counters that Romanov throws a lot - I remember Thaxton being briefly stunned by Stewart which doesn't bode well for him here.

Very impressive matchmaking-- Amir Khan must be breathing a big sigh of relief, Yuri Romanov is going to get Thaxton out of the way for him.

Post fight Sports Network release for Amir: "I dont even need to challenge for the British or European belts because i already beat Graham Earl who beat Romanov so there is no need to prove my obvious superiority.

I look forward to my upcoming fight againt Miguel Crappotirez for the vacant interim WBO lightweight title that shall commence my reign over the realm of the Lightweights. Crappotirez as you know had 30 fights at featherweight and knocked out over 2 of his opponents, so this will be a risky match for me"

Fantastic match-up.. a real evens fight

How long before the TV companies wake up to the real fights Hennessy Sports are willing to offer over the rubbish Fwank offers.

Before anybody points me towards Enzo v Haye or Calzaghe v Hopkins .. let me just say those fights whilst great (enzo/haye anyway) benefit SN more than the channel airing them.

SN benefit in that their guy fights the number1 in that division which means big future ££ if he wins .. would he have Enzo giving Haye a chance if Enzo was the recognised top dog? .. will he have Enzo having any future risky assignments if he wins?? 21defences against typical SN opposition me thinks..

And who even expects the Calzaghe v Hopkins match-up to be anything other than a bore?

Quite amusing really - We have Khan calling out the world, but in reality is fighting people from out of his weight division or shot to shit.

As many of you predicted, Warren has only used Romanov's name - And Khan has belittled Thaxton without putting pen to paper to fight him.

I know which one fighter and promotional outfit is left with egg on their face.

Good point about Hennessy. This is a good match-up, Froch is getting in with Inkin and will soon be super middle King and obviously everyone loves Junior Witter

The thing is Hennessy and more importantly his top fighter are more than willing .. and seemingly able ..to fight and `smoke the boots`of any guy in their division.

Looking at Thaxtons last couple fights would suggest he`s the underdog .. I just get the impression that Jon was trying too hard to make a big impression .. I`m hoping he`ll put more thought into how he fights this one.

Not sure about that Tony, I mean Hennessey hasn't got a big ticket seller in his collection, so he kinda has to go the traditional routes to get his fighters into decent positions.

I'd like to see if he would milk the occasion ala SN if he had a golden goose.

great fight for Hennessy to make. Especially after Khan didn't go for Romanov. Seems Warren was just tellig porky pies! Good luck to Thaxton.

Hopefully the British title doesn't get held up too much. How about some kind of elim between Murray and Meager?

if that happens will old Fwank think Thaxton deserves a proper deal? I hope if that happens Thaxton tells Khan to fight him for peanuts or fcuk off

allegedly - We have an option, either a fight in the USA or a European title shot.

Several weeks later Khan has a fight announced not in the USA and not against the European champ.

Gotta love boxing.

Think age and are hard career might be catching up with Thaxton... hence I think Khan is a little bit in a no-win situation (like the Earl fight). However, Ramanov apparently wasn't looking to hot vs Tontchev, and looks whats happend to Tontcho since.

However, I think Thaxton will take too many early and get a cut.

What a nice thought!!!

Look Thaxton now has his Lonsdale belt, I think he really needs this step up as there is'nt anything domestically (apart from Khan!!!) .

I really want Thaxton to win this but I don't think that this fight will ever trouble the late rounds. Romanov should despatch him at around 6 or 7 max.
