The Holmes-Snipes ending, to me, brings up another issue--I wonder sometimes why boxers don't have more of an instinct, or a willingness, to just drop off their feet when they're cornered and getting slugged. I mean when it's reaching that severity where they're almost out on their feet, and/or the referee might be about to step in.
Like the way Corrales was better off falling down twice (and spitting out his mouthpiece) to get the 8-counts and collect himself a bit, but Castillo, despite taking less punishment, got caught in the corner and suffered the stoppage.
Maybe that's not the best example, but at any rate, I rarely see a boxer take a knee when getting walloped in the corner.

Ali fought by different rules.Hard to beat a man whose 3 point line is 8 feet from the basket. Ali had all the breaks, that has to be factored into any assessment of Ali.

In 1951 Ive read Gavilan got the nod over Billy in a BAD dec.
Ive never seen this fight .
Maybe someone here can give us some iinsight on it.

This whole fight exists, & although I haven't seen it in a while, the impression I had was certainly NOT a robbery-thought it could've gone either way. It was a close fight & difficult to score-I do remember Graham really coming on in the later rounds, & once the decision was read, the crowd began to riot.

Will have to check this one out again sometime.

granberry, I don't see why Ali fans would dislike Young. Ali was past his prime against Young. Had Ali lost to Young when close to his peak then they might be mad at Young because the fight could be viewed as a bad mark on Ali's abilities but honestly I don't think people are going to get terribly worked up about fighters who beat their favorites when they are far past it.

Besides, wasn't Ali-Holmes considerably less competitive than Ali-Young?

But I didn't mean to start a thread just about Ali-Young (or Cotton-Torres, which I actually haven't seen). It seems like the very existence of the notion that a champion must be beaten soundly exposes the fact that championship fights are not going to be scored fairly. Otherwise, why even suggest that there's a subjective aspect to the scoring?

If each round were looked at objectively, then seven rounds in which the champion cruises, fights defensively, feels his man out, bides his time, etc., while the challenger pursues and lands a few more punches--even if they're of no real consequence--I believe that kind of round should go to the aggressor. And that would beat a total of five rounds in which the champion puts his man on the ropes, hammers him with flurries and outpunches him by 40 punches a round. (Unless he knocks him down and earns a 10-8.)

I like the champion bias, but you already have it built in if it comes up a draw. Not sure it needs more than that. Ali Young...bad officiating however it could have come up 1 round in either man's favor or a draw and you can't call it a robbery. So you can't call the fight a blatant robbery based on that. But it was bullshit scoring no doubt. I guess Young couldnt do to Ali what he did to Foreman, or what granberry says he held back from doing to Norton. He just fought an honestly competiive fight that one can argue should have gone the his way but by no more than a round or two at most.
