Is that down to his matchmaker/manager as much as his own fistic ability?

Long strings of early KOs rarely convert into long term success on the world level - Valero being an obvious recent exception to this rule of thumb.

A high KO percentage catches the eye but even Benn will tell you, a fighter needs a few hard distance fights to learn his trade.

Berto has impressed me. Quick, good technique, solid chin by the looks of things, and he has a champion's attitude in that he looks for the kill.

Do you not think he's past prospect now, James? I'm still not convinced on him after Rivera put him on his ass, but, fair play, he got back up and won convincingly enough.

He needs to stop looking for the KO each time. He's in a very rich division right now.

HE was dropped in a recent match with Cosme Rivera I saw on TV but recovered well.

He is an exciting prospect,no doubt with his quick powerful hands.

His brother isnt quite as successful, fighting MMA.

He was stopped by Yves Edwards with a brutal knee to the head a couple of weekends ago.

Who knows one day Andre might give MMA a go..

I still hold out a faint hope that long time prospect/contender 'Panchito' Bojado will put it all together and fulfill his early promise, but as the days/years pass his chances are fast fading.

Great style, lovely to watch, but poor discipline and long periods of inactivity don't help.

Vicente Escobedo is another one who has to get a move on. A solitary points loss against fellow prosepct Jiminez is his only set back.

Lovely style but dont know if he is robust enough.

Mexican Marcos Reyes might be one to keep an eye on, or one to forget after Friday when he takes on Kirino Garcia. To say Garcia is more experienced is an understatment. Garcia has had 69 fights, and fought at a good level. Marcos Reyes has had 4 fights, all wins

the other 3 on a world level
thanks for clarifying that ss.....you could argue of course that having won the C'wealth Barker has surpassed Brit level although I think the division is clearly one of the weaker ones right now.......what is he, middle?? to big for Jamie Moore and Mike Jones and the like but too small for Froch and Kessler and co........it could be a lot worse couldn't it.
Still I wouldn't be too pessimistic about his chances, I reckon there's a bloody good work ethic in Barker and a good attitude and that can take you a long way.

As regards Khan I completely agree and hope that he goes all the way and also expect that he will do........not like some of the dings on here who begrudge him success at every single turn.......bloody ridiculous on a forum dedicated to boxing if you ask me but I don't make the rules.

Andy Lee.........not seen him once...........look forward to the day when I do cos everything I have read has been very positive about him. I think there is definitely more there talent-wise, than in say, Duddy, who also courts his fair share of column inches.
I like Barker a lot. He seems to have every punch and is a tidy operator. He has some venom in his work as well. I think he can go far, but not quickly. If he does win world honours, it will be after steadily winning at British & Euro level after a few yrs IMO.

There are defeinitely fighters out there who can get to the top faster. I like the look of the Filipino AJ Banal.

I think Berto and Povetkin are contenders now. Certainly have surpassed the prospect phase by means of dominant fringe level/top 10 (in Povetkin's case with Chambers) wins.

He was knocked down in his last fight, so it will be interesting to see what happens next. I don't know whether his recent inactivity is due to worries about how good he is or promotion troubles.

What classifies as a prospect? Does anyone who is unbeaten and has yet to win a world title still class as a prospect? When does a prospect become a contender? I am only curious as some British, Commonwealth and European champions are being named. Plus world title challengers (Povetkin next up for Wlad).

What's the rules here!!? :D

that's true IMO too. Bit like all these moaners about the Scots lad (sorry pal it's gone!!!) who put Amir Khan down. So what Khan had his dodgy spell in the fight........big fr*gging deal that kid was one tough kid and fit as fire. Khan got up and won - in the very next round (or so?) no less. And don't let's have a new thread for flip's sake.
Still can't think of the geezer.....tough kiddie though.

As regards Brunson though I read about him about a year or 2 ago I remember now......obviously only had half as many wins. Sounds like one to watch.

Personally I believe that bombing them out early comes at the cost of learning the trade and one day you will need that to fall back on when you are fighting someone too clever/tough/talented/lucky/experienced/determined (get the picture?) to get KOd in a couple rounds.

who was the guy that was being talked up on the Hatton Mayweather (see my mistake there   undercard........they were on about him, I kid you not....as Mayweather's protege....and then the WRONG guy went and dropped him heavily with a left, then moments later sparked him with the same shot........
Anyway, the guy who got done in was meant to be going places.

As for Berto.....very effective in an unspectacular kind of way and looks like he missed being a dwarf by about 2 inches, but the TV people love him and he has a very compact style and clever boxing brain, should continue to improve.

Reyes won beating Garcia in the 9th, Garcia may be at the end of his career but its a good result for a 5 fight novice to beat him.
