Greg Dyke has resigned (BBC chief.)

He was allegedly a boxing fan and he said he wanted to see more.

I think this is a potentially bad thing.

Yes in theory the return of Match Of The Day should signal the end of Boxing but BBC always show there fights late on a Friday night so why should it? Just a thought.

I can remember a thread a good few months ago on another site that was discussing the impact the return of MOTD would have on boxing. To be fair most people said they thought boxing might get binned when it came back, if the rumours are true it looks like we were right, sadly.

I don't think Greg Dyke leaving will be that much of a contributing factor personally, the boxing was always just a temporary time filler in my opinion.

Does the 'delay' of Swaby - Haye suggest the end is only just round the corner? Patrick J Maxwell Jnr seems to know something and he trains with Swaby and fights on the BBC himself, so it's not like the rumours have come from some plank with no connections.

Maybe ITV will jump onboard again if they're losing the footie.

Pat Maxwell on BN24 has got a thread over there and his manager told him today they are cutting back on boxing. Gutted if true

Yep, completely gutted IF this happens. We all pay our TV licence (in theory) , so we should individually bombard the BBC with letters telling them that us boxing fans want to see boxing on our screens.

Mike Lewis is the head of BBC Boxing and Ben Anderson runs things on a day to day basis.

This is what BBC boxing editor Jim Bentley said when questioned in November taken from the BBC website:

There are strong rumours in the press that the BBC sports dept doesn't have much of a budget left after buying back the rights for the Premiership.

The recurring theme is that the boxing coverage will be the first to suffer, which would be a shame. Can you confirm or deny this?

Jim B: That's a tricky one - there are rumours, and I hear them all the time - but I'm not sure it's just to do with the football. Obviously we paid quite a bit of money to get the Premiership rights back, so there will be cut-backs, but I think the main problem is that 2004 is such a busy year in sport.

Euro 2004, the Olympic Games and all the usual sporting events are taking place, so even if we were as busy as we are now I'd imagine that for the three to four summer months you wouldn't see any boxing on television because there is nowhere to put it.

We are not going to get out of boxing, and will be looking at a few other contracts. But to be honest I'm probably as in the dark as you are over this! So I know I'll sound like a politician, but I can neither confirm nor deny the rumours!

I can't see ITV backing it after getting their fingers burnt in the past.

Remember when C5 bought Moorer-Holyfield 2? The ESPN2 fights have been excellent and have been impressed over the last few weeks.

Very little boxing happens during the summer months so lets hope the bbc can find some money in it's budget for the continued support of boxing.

As has been said though, boxing doesn't really suit the bbc self image these days does it?

Let me tell you that the BBC is fully behind boxing and plans to inject more money into it in 2004 THAN 2003.

Also, it see's the return of MOTD as a perfect way to launch LIVE BOXING.

This is how it will work :

MOTD - 10.OO PM till 11.15pm
LIVE BOXING - 11.15pm till 1.00pm

SO STOP SPREADING RUMOURS THAT THE BBC IS SCRAPPING BOXING. IT'S 100% BEHIND BOXING!

Snooker. Darts. Crown Green Bowls. Equestrian. Badminton. Squash. 3rd division athletics meets. And bastard cricket. Shit, BBC and ITV sports coverage sucks these days. A petition is a great idea. Dunno if it'll amount to anything though. They haven't the cash. If a seriously fornicate off sporting event like the Tour De France can't get any coverage then I doubt even top rank boxing matches will too. It's just too politically incorrect in the UK these days (it seems simulated rape, murder and drug abuse on pre-watershead soap operas are where they real money is) and the license rights from - say - HBO etc are too much for them. Hate to say it, but unless you can afford satellite / cable etc you won't be watching much boxing in Britain.
