Past Boxers - Bill Williams, sparring partner for Ali?

Post by m1kee50 »

Billy Williams

Someone I know is a mate of 'a' Bill Williams, who says he sparred Ali. Can anyone shed any light on this? I have put the record of what I beleive to be this man on the post - it says he was boxing in Florida in 72/73. He also fought Dave Parris.

Any help or info, much appreciated.

I'm reading Thom Hauser's book on Ali, so if it'as true he'll be in there.

I'm up to Frazier 1, so not far off.

Enrique just posted on BOTP the following

"Williams is an Englishman who was sent over by his management and was a regular at the Fifth Street Gym for a while. It is very possible that he would have sparred with Ali several times since most light heavies and heavies in the gym did spar with Ali at one time or another.

Ali's regular sparring partners were his brother Rahman Ali and Harvey Cody Jones. For specific bouts other would be hired -Holmes, Roy Williams, Bossman Jones, Mel Turnbow- but Ali was always willing to spar any guy who wanted his three minutes in the ring with the champ."

so he might not have a definite mention

I'll let you know if it does. One of his main sparring partners was actually a welterweight, pre-Vietnam, as he was the only one that could keep up with him for speed. He didn't like being hit, or hitting, during sparring. Up to 67 anyway.

this is the correct record for bill williams he bill did spar with ali because angelo dundee was his trainer and manager at the time bill got in to a bit of trouble in the usa and dundee had had enough and decided to send bill home to england where he only had a couple more fights before losing the hunger for the sport and retiring he is still on the manor around canning town and still follows boxing and is somtimes seen at the york hall at shows
