Michael Nunn gets 24 years...

Post by bennie »

Former world middleweight champion Michael Nunn was sentenced today to more than 24 years in prison for buying two pounds of cocaine from an undercover agent. The 40-year-old Nunn was arrested in August 2002 at a hotel in his hometown of Davenport, Iowa, moments after paying an agent $200 for one kilogram of cocaine with an estimated street value of $24,000.
He pleaded guilty in May to one count of conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
Judge Gritzner agreed to a higher sentencing guideline after considering Nunn's long history in drug trafficking and the likelihood he used a firearm during drug deals.
During the three-day sentencing hearing, prosecutors called witnesses who testified about Nunn's drug activity dating back as far as 1993. Nunn, who accepted responsibility for buying the drugs in August 2002, denied his involvement in drug trafficking, pointing out that several of the witnesses were in prison and could have their sentences reduced for providing testimony.
Nunn, who was defiant throughout the hearing Friday, accused lawyers of lying and scheming to bring him down.
"You guys haven't shown me nothing," Nunn said in his statement to the judge. "Where are your facts, Mr. Prosecutor?"
As a boxer, Nunn had a 58-4 [38] record, and earned at least $6 million.

I was never a fan of Nunn. He peaked the night he fought Frank Tate to win the IBF middleweight title in 1988, and despite a flash in the pan knockout over Sumbu Kalambay, really disappointed as champ. Iran Barkley exposed him somewhat, and James Toney blew the myth apart.
When he moved up to super-middle he was awful to watch. Just turned up and tried to win fights on natural ability. He wasn't willing to pay the price in training.

I'm no law expert, but that sentence seem a bit on the steep side, considering you can eat a person (with consent) and only get 8 years.

The judge took into account 11 years of previous cocaine dealing on behalf of Nunn, and clearly didn't like Nunn's attitude either. He was a fool to himself.

Wow, 24 years in prison for spending $200.

That judge must have been high on drugs himself IMO.

I mean, face it. Using the stuff Nunn was caught on trying to make a buck is as common in american society as ordering a drink at a local bar.
That is, for the priviliged ones. Such as businessmen, politicians and judges.

Nunn is a dumb MF for dealing this stuff. But the hypocrit American legal system is not just dumb, but sick IMO.

24 yrs :o drugs should be legalised anyway if people wanna shove it up there nose thats there problem

i got some michael nunn fights just recently his fight with james toney (what a left hook ) and his 2 super middle defences against dan morgan (mismatch) and crawford ashley (another mismatch).

he looked a very good fighter he was ahead against toney until he tired and got nailed by that mega ton left, and he looked a class act against morgan and ashley i thought.

watching those fights its a shame he never fought a nigel benn or a chis eubank.

The high tariffs for drug dealing and armed robbery are an attempt to put others off doing it.

Not many people have the inclination to rape a child or eat a man, but lots of people want to make quick money.

That's why major drug barons and robbers are invariably highly foolish or extremely brave.

Intresting info I found, wrap your mind around this one:

America 1992 to 1999

3.2 million tobacco deaths
1.4 million alcohol deaths
6,237 tylenol deaths
0 marijuana deaths

When will you people learn? This has nothing to do with right or wrong, it's all about money. This is the conspiracy going on in our government.

They lock up anyone involved with illegal drugs in anyway, while letting all the murderers run free. That way, when they stab, shoot, or maim you in general, you are forced to buy PRESCRIPTION drugs to ease the pain.

Such is the Faustian deal the government has with large drug companies.

The crimes that get you the longest are those which involve you making fat wads of cash in ways that the judiciary must

I don't see how there is any way that Nunn would have been stupid enough to think he was gonna get a K for 200 dollars. They always overestimate the street value of shit in drug busts anyway, but someone reporting on that must have screwed up.

Shit 1g of the shit is 30-40 dollars, so that would be a massive fornicating discount, even for 1000 grammes. That's 20 cents a gramme, if anyone knows where I can get a deal like that, without doing 24 years for it, you just let me know by PM, and I'm right there.

24 Years is waaaaayy too long a sentence. Shit I mean unless he was supplying half the west coast single handedly he didn't deserve that.

Poor dude, he'll be a old man when he gets back. If he resumes his career, he'll certainly have outdone Ayala!

Yes, but he has re-offended so much. He's lucky that the three strike law wasn't in effect in his state.

For a man as wise as you are it's a shame that you are President of the Joe Mesi fanclub though :D

Seems way too harsh in the scheme of things - rapists and murderers get 10 years and Nunn gets 24 years for falling for a police sting?

"...likelihood he used a firearm.." what the hell does that mean?! Either he did, or he didn't - obviously they didn't catch him with a gun by the sounds of it.

I can't think of many more dramatic falls from grace. The man was a multi millionaire in his 20's, the world at his feet. And now he's in jail and broke for virtualy the rest of his life.

I know. That's why I showed you this :D face. But it's true you are a great admirer of Tua's devastating right hand, aren't you? :D

But seriousely, I know this is not a political forum, but I totally back your vieuws on the Nunn story. Nunn is an idiot for what he did, but the people that judged him are twice as bad.

Nunn was a good fighter but was really boring in many of his fights, infact his fight with Don Curry honestly sent McCoy to sleep

I was there when Steve Little beat Michael Nunn in 1994 (on the Benn-Wharton bill). Just before the Nunn fight, I nipped to the toilet. I faced a big queue and they must have come out of the dressing rooms quite quickly - I could hear the announcements while waiting to test the Earls Court urinal.

I heard a big roar and thought "Shit, Little has gone already." Unless my mind is playing tricks on me, I later found out that Nunn had been dropped in the first whilst I had been emptying my lager-strained bladder! Nunn lost on points.

Story of my life...holding my own while all the others get some action.

Nunn was VERY good at his peak and a shame he is yet another boxing tragedy.

The bigger tragedy is Little's death, from cancer, a short while ago. It was black day for boxing when he passed away. Nunn's prison sentence is a mere black eye.

Blimey, that news about Steve Little puts it all into perspective. That one had slipped by me. Couldn't agree with you more.

The more I think of the 24 year-sentence, the more I think Nunn brought it on himself. His attitude in court was like: "As soon as I'm out on the street, I'm dealing again."
So the judge threw away the key.
