Where To Buy Boxing Gloves?

Need to get a pair, where do you recommend (must be on the super information highway)?

Also, any particular makes?

different gloves have different reps, apparently the Reyes ones are punchers gloves.... one of the actual fighters might have more of an idea, but it does depend on price range and to an extent on style.

I haven't used training gloves before, just sparring ones, what's the difference?

If you have a sports soccer, or sports direct shop nearby try there. They have Lonsdale gloves with about 70% off. Some for less than a tenner.

Not cheap but the bag and pad gloves are good quality, comfortable and have lasted me over a year so far with no problems

I just got mine in town mate, sparring gloves and training gloves, job done! However I did get 16oz sparring gloves so may take up Wales tip and get some lighter Jamie Moore VIP ones.

I got 16oz in the belief they would improve my handspeed, use them for sparring then when I did come to fight with lighter gloves I would have RJJ hand speed. Didn't work, more like Jack Duckworth hand speed

Since it looks like the comeback might be on, any tips on where to get good quality gum shields from?

Also since my wisdom teeth have come through, I retch like mad when I have plastic in my mouth, any ideas on h ow to overcome this when I put my gum sheild in?

But also get those teeth checked by dentist, as mine ended up cracking the 2 teeth next to them, cost loads.

Bulldog Sports does, which is stil in Shirley I think. Ocean Gym (just off the ferry for you) might do as well. That's where I'll probably end up as Henry Castle and Colin Kenna speak highly of it.

I absolutely reccomend 'Winning' gloves, I believe a lot of the pros use them for training as they have very good cushioning.

I bought mine from Japan (which is where the company is from) and they were about £100 but they have held up well and are of a high quality.

yeah, over on the island we don't have a gym where you can just go and train , its only the boxing clubs, which quite rightly don't want a load of older guys taking up space for the actual boxers.

I've been sounding out a trainer to do a non-boxer night, with circuit training , bag work and pads. plus if the guys want sparring. He's keen enough, but not sure he'd get the number of people to make it worth his while.

But i may make it to Southampton, even if its just once a month , I've not even hit a bag for a couple of years now. So miss that side of training.

Cheers for the tip Ian. The shop in Queensway is where I got mine but it closed a few years ago. Probably be sports direct in West Quay now. Bulldog Sports shut down ages ago too, its now an exotic pet shop!

I have the green 12oz training gloves and white 16oz sparring gloves form VIP. For what its worth most, if not all, of the VIP fighters use the gloves to train. I've also seen the VIP contest gloves used in small hall shows, for the money you cant go wrong.

Been looking at the Ocean Gyms website, looks good. Might pay the £25 membership fee, then i could go over once or twice a month , on pay as you go.

My mate, who spars with Henry Castle there, has told me not to bother as they dump you in head first and don't match you properly, which is a no-go for me.

I can let you know one's in the area that we're gonna go to in case you want to come along (I can always pick you up from the ferry port) like the friendless islander you are?

Surely the final say rests with you? When I boxed out of Southampton ABC, the final choice as to who we sparred etc came to us, we chose and chose the power and contact and the punch variety etc.

Not at Ocean, apparently. He said another he suggested to avoid, but I forget which one. He knows of a couple where they provide close hand supervision/tuition, which suits me better.

As another postermentioned, sugarrays is a good online site - good service and fast delivery...

I use Everlast Pro Sparring Gloves, nice and solid and have a good lifespan... Its not easy recommending gloves, everyone has their own tastes..!

Everlast is my choice :)
