Dissapointed with the Sutherland result - I thought he would have too much for De Gale!
Best result of that round for me has to be JJ Nevin - beating Detelin Dalakliev was no mean feat. If he win ONE of his next two fights he's through - right?

The AIBA site say that the GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE medal winners in the 54kg weight go through. That means Nevin, if he wins the QF, is through to the semi final, and if both losing semi finalists get BRONZE, he's through....
All the semifinalists will go to Beijing, and in those few weight classes with three entrants, there will be a third-place box-off for the other spot. As slighoboy suggested, Nevin can win today, or win the next day.
However, the materials from Pescara do not show any third-place fights on the schedule. I would hope they wouldn't just award the place based on who lost to the champion or something like that. In the African Qualifiers, they needed three and had a box-off for third place.
Price lost his appeal, but I've just heard that Azebaijan may have been thrown out of the whole tournament - so with a bit of luck that means Pricey is back in.
Only finalists guaranteed to get through. In most of the middle weight categories there are three qualifiers, so losing semi-finalists box off
Price dropped Arshaba in the 2nd and all he did after that was hit and hold and recieved 3 or 4 warnings, without being penalised.
If he had been penalised, Price would have won on a countback apparently.
What is this about Azerbaijan being thrown out the tournament then?

Did you mean finalists instead od semi finalists.
I assume there will be a box of on saturday for those 3 or 4 weights who have 3 places and not two. All semi finalist will recieve a bronze nontheless - again thats my assumption.
Are the BBC going to show any of this on saturday.

Yeah, finalists. Sorry.
Khalid Yafai beat Igor Samoilenco this morning and has qualified for the Olympics for Britain.
Arshba has been disqualified as not eligible to fight for Azerbaijan. So, apparently, Helenius is being given his spot in the semis, apparently after being drawn from a hat between the fighters defeated by Arshba. Which is, well, odd.

No its fair enough - who is to say that Helenius wouldnt have made it to that round without Arshba.
John Joe Nevin through for Ireland - John Joe Nevin loses however!

No word on our biggest hope Kenny Egan
I agree that Price's argument is flawed, but choosing Helenius at this point has some problematic issues. Mainly, that he has had only one fight and has been resting for a few days. Maybe that's muted by Tomasovic winning by WO in his last fight as well, but I think it would probably be best at this point to just give Tomasovic another WO, rather than let Helenius advance with only one victory.

Surely the fact that Helenius lost by such a huge margin to Arshba in their fight should count for something?
Ah well, Price still has another shot at qualification left.
Hopefully he will make it.
I don't understand how they came up with Arshba was not eligible to fight for Azerbaijan? Surely they should have thought about that before the tournament started?
Saunders is a great story. I didn't know anything about him, but I read some about his being a traveler. The American press will eat that up in their Olympics coverage, and it looks like, given his age and performance in this qualifier, he is a serious threat to medal at the Olympics. A match up against the American teenager Demetrius Andrade, especially if it were for the gold, could be one of the most interesting in the Games.
Apparently Stephen Smith refused to continue fighting Djelkhir after falling behind 11-1 in the first round. Given that poor sportsmanship, I'm sort of glad to see him lose in the third-place bout. There's obviously nothing against the English team, given their success, so it would be nice to see them not acting like the worst of petulant American athletes.
I find that very hard to believe. The English corner would decide whether or not to fight on. Perhaps they thought it would be better to save him for the 3rd/4th box-off instead?
