How do you think that Duran would have fared against a peak ODLH at a late stage in his career?I Feel Fine wrote:Duran by decision, no doubt in my mind. Bigger, harder hitter, better defense, likely just as good a chin, etc. etc. Duran was in there with Hagler, Chavez's biggest toughest opponent was Oscar... need I say more?

Duran hands down is the greatest lightweight of all time. Yes Chavez is right up there too...this is one of those tough, tough fights to call...both men were so skillful, and could punch like hell as well...this would go down as arguably the greatest fight ever...
I'd pick Duran to win it, but for the life of me, a Chavez victory is not out of the question either...

Chavez was about 34 and 36 when he fought Oscar, which means if Duran fought him at those ages he would be a Middleweight rather than a Jr. Welterweight and Welterweight, as Oscar and Chavez were. Not sure how that would be worked out, but it just goes to show how much bigger Duran was than Chavez, who was too small even for Welterweight. Plus that also brings to mind the fact that Duran was competing with big Middleweights like Barkley, as opposed to what Chavez was doing against 140 and 147 pounders at that age and older.Syntax Error wrote:How do you think that Duran would have fared against a peak ODLH at a late stage in his career?I Feel Fine wrote:Duran by decision, no doubt in my mind. Anyway, I don't know who I would pick, probably Duran. But I know that if Oscar did win that he would not do it as easily as he did against Chavez, and he certainly would not score two TKO's over Duran. Hagler-Chavez, on the other hand, is too absurd to even mention. Especially considering that at the age Duran fought Hagler, 32, Chavez was fighting Randall.

I'm not sure about that. Had they never fought, I'm sure many people would have considered Hagler-Duran a mismatch, I know I would have, anyway. Hagler really dropped the ball, letting Duran be as competitive as that fight was.
Can't for the life of me see Duran boxing against Chavez, this'll be a war, & Chavez, for mine, is the tougher man. Duran is more talented, & more versatile. Close to a pick 'em for me, I'm edging toward Duran.

I didn't make my assessment on Chavez on the basis that he lost to Oscar. I simply said that Oscar was the biggest, toughest guy he fought; which isn't much compared to the biggest, toughest guys Duran fought.generic screen name wrote:What I hate about some people they associate the Chavez that fought Oscar and make their assessment then, but the guy fought guys like Rosario, Jose Luis Ramirez, and busted them up pretty good. I think Duran takes this one, but Chavez was a beast on the inside.

Except that isn't what I said. I said, Hagler dropped the ball letting that fight be as competitive as it was, which is not what you seemed to have interpreted.ringsider wrote:You talk about me, and you say that fight was competitive?Goodnight, Irene wrote:I'm not sure about that. Good points.elmersalsa wrote:People forget also that Duran had UNDERRATED SPEED...I think that this is the KEY for this fight...Duran was a FAST starter and Chavez a SLOW starter. By the time Chavez gets warmed up, Duran has a HUGE LEAD.
I pick Duran by decision...NOBODY KOs Julio in his prime...NOBODY!!!
