He fought Holyfield, Golota, Seldon, Donald and Hide and thats it.
Where was Foreman, Moorer, McCall, Morrison, Mercer, Akinwande, Lewis, Tyson, Bruno, Witherspoon etc.
I beg to differ with you here. Yes, Bowe did not fight some of those top fighters you mentioned: Foreman, McCall, Moorer, Morrison, Mercer, Akinwande, Lewis, Tyson, Bruno, Witherspoon.... But if you think about it, alot of those same fighters didn't fight each other either. Foreman never faced Holmes, McCall, Akinwande, Lewis, Bruno, Witherspoon... Moorer never faced Morrison, Mercer, Lewis, etc..... Lewis never faced Moorer, Akinwande, Witherspoon, Foreman... You get the idea.
But Bowe did fight Golota 2 times, Holyfield 3 times, Jorge Luis Gonzalez ( when Gonzo was undefeated and beleived to be good at the time ), Hide, Donald, ex-heavyweight champs Michael Dokes, Tony Tubbs, and Pinklon Thomas. He fought Coetzer, future champ Seldon ( and beat a Seldon in his prime easily ), a dangerous and young Bert Cooper, Tyrell Biggs. He even squared off early in his career against tough guys Garing Lane and Lionel Butler.
So yes, Bowe could have faced a few more guys during his prime years. But he did face quite a few good and excellent heavyweights during his career.
From how I saw it. Bowe threw the WBC belt in the trash cause he just attained it with a brutal, hard-fought win over Evander Holyfield, and the WBC sanctioning body was 'ordering' him to face Lennox Lewis right after winning it. ( Unknown ethnic background ) Rock Newman was upset at this, claiming ALL new champions get to pick their first opponent once gaining a title belt, and thus was being discriminated against. Bowe and Newman's plan was to beat someone like Jesse Ferguson, who had just won a hard-fought battle over heavily favored Ray Mercer to win a well deserved shot at the title. Then they were planning to take on Lewis. Since the WBC threatened to strip Bowe of the WBC belt if he didn't meet with Lewis first, they pre-emptive struck first and dumped the hypocritic WBC's belt.
Of course most fans of Lewis saw this as Bowe being afraid of Lewis, but I didn't see it that way. Bowe was eager to get back at Lewis for the unjustice he was served up during the 1988 Olympics where the biased ref called an end to the fight, after just one punch Lewis landed on Bowe. Most people ringside were stunned and confused when the referee stopped the contest early in the 2nd round, wondering why the referee wasn't allowing the fight to continue.
Was he stopping it because Bowe won?! Was he stopping it because Lewis won? Was a towel thrown into the ring? Was he waiting for a mouthpeice to be put back in? Was he issuing an standing eight count to someone?
Bottom line is, you don't call a fight because of just one solo punch lands. Either a fighter has to show signs of being hurt or injured or unable to continue, and none of these were the case. Bowe had his gloves up in his face, nodding "I'm OK" to the referee, but the referee was like, "No, I don't want you 'American' to win. You are disqualified!"
It was absolutely ridiculous.......
