Boxing Training Camp

Post by Finch »

Hi,

I'm taking time out from work over the summer for about three months and am looking to find a boxing training camp somewhere in the world to go to and train hard get into the best shape of my life etc and just do boxing boxing boxing, eat boxing, drink boxing and sleep boxing.

Are there any boxing camps in the world anyone can reccomend or ideas on where to go, i've had a look at Wildcard boxing club in LA as i have family there but not sure if they accept amatures who haven't fought before ? i've been to Thailand to a couple of Thai boxing camps and would be looking for something similar but just boxing boxing and more boxing.

Cheers

Finch, could you give some specifics about yourself which might help. Things such as age, weight, experience, stance, and height. If it works out that you could add something such as sparring at a specific level, it might help. It sounds like you are serious to learn and would like the camp type setting for the discipline. Also, I am curious as to your future plans in boxing. Are you looking to work your way up through the amateur ranks if possible or are you looking to get some experience there and then try to turn pro. Could I be wrong on all counts and are you MMA looking to improve your hands, or are you just looking to learn to box for the heck of it and some weight control. Knowing these answers could help make a better fit. I personally have not heard of a boxing camp that last 3 months and is open to anyone. There are a few shorter camps and then there are invitational camps for more advanced boxers. Then ,at the risk of Mel hitting me over the head in here, there are pro camps to get ready for major fights and unless you were pretty experienced it would be a long shot to participate in one of them. PLUS! there are people that feel it goes against the rules of amateur boxes to spar with pros.

Almost all of the top amateurs spar with pros even those that trained in Maryland. :D

It has been going on for decades too. I sparred with pros all the time when I was competing. The top amateurs back then and now spar with world champions to gain experience and it helps the pros too.

It is against the rules. However, I know that most of our elite boxers do - and I really don't have a problem if the pro was amateur and knows how to work with the athlete. I can tell you from experience, however, it's very easy to see what amateurs train with pros - they wait too long, they don't keep their gloves up, they hold - blah, blah, blah.

Mel, if you are correct about the rule of pros not sparring with amateurs, we better hope that the rule is never inforced of we will in effect loose all of our top amateurs. I shouldn't say all, how about the majority.

The rulebook says amateur boxers can't COMPETE with pros. They can train with pros and they do it all the time. The elite boxers typically hand it to many of the pros and hang with the champions. I'm sure Fernando worked out with many pros.

Only when we had the opportunity. He worked with Joppy just before his fight with Bute But that was last week. He did work many times with Lamont and Anthony Peterson every since they became pros., Like you said many of the guys that went to the Olympic trials were working with pros and many were top flight guys.

The vast majority of elite boxers have worked with pros from time to time.

The rule is never enforced, as we well know. Maybe they'll clean up the language in the new rule book - if we ever get it.

They need to fix a lot of rules in the rulebook.
