2008 National Golden Gloves: Countdown to Grand Rapids

Everyone should post the results of their local, state and regional Golden Gloves Tournaments in this thread.

The National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions is being held in Grand Rapids, MI from May 5-10, 2008. The tournament is being held at the DeVos Place convention center in downtown Grand Rapids.

Tickets go on sale today at all Ticketmaster locations. Some sponsorship packages are still available as well, but many of the sponsor tables have already been sold. Reserve your ringside table or buy your ringside tickets now before they are gone.

The first day of bouts at the 2008 National GG tournament is 9 weeks from today. 63 days!!! I hope to see everyone there.

In the Texas Golden Gloves, the Southeast region (Houston) cleaned up once again, putting all 11 team members in the semi-finals, 8 in the finals, and winning 6 weight divisions.

I dont have the complete results, only the Southeast region champions:

Featherweight Mercedes Manriquez
Lightweight Eric Fowler
Middleweight Nelson Ramos
Light Heavyweight Terrance Woods
Heavyweight Craig Baker
Super Heavyweight Darlington Agha

Baker defeated Sirr Smith from San Antonio in the final.
Woods beat Kelly Buchanan in the final.

Coach Lopez singled out Eric for praise when we spoke. Said that he'd improved alot this year and was doing a better job keeping his chin down. He's a very aggressive fighter and only has about 40 bouts. He surprised everyone in 2006 when he defeated Jesus Mendez at the local GG. Fowler's a good person too, always at ringside cheering on the other top open fighters and he wraps and works the corner for all the younger members from his club.

Sounds like a future coach to me! Heck, sign him up now and get him certified. We need young coaches in the sport. I watched a couple of his bouts on YouTube last year and was impressed. I look forward to seeing him in Grand Rapids.

Who is this 141lbs boxer from Houston that lost to Dan O'Connor at the Nationals in Colorado Springs? Jermell Charlo for Savannah Boxing Club, It shows that he fought his first professional bout in Dec 07 and won and then went back to amateurs and lost. What is going on in Houston? I don't think that Dickie Cole approves of that mess if he is still in charge down there.

Roberts - are you talking #'s of boxers or the #'s of fans?

Here in MI, it is both. We had almost 100 boxers enter the East MI GG and almost 200 enter the West MI GG. It is mostly men with about 15-20 women out of the nearly 300 entries. It looks as if boxing is making a comeback. Our first night of the West MI GG had nearly 2,000 fans in attendance. Not bad for the preliminaries. It will be standing room only for the finals. The East MI GG changed locations and their attendance is way up over what it has been for years. Their District Finals almost challenged the West sides #'s for the first time in many years. It is going to make the State semi-finals and finals be awesome. Great bouts and great crowds. Everyone wants to be a part of the Golden Gloves because of its popularity.

I read another account of big numbers somewhere (as well as the earlier story from New York about entries being the highest in 20 years) as well. Great news for boxing overall.

Dennis, both - We had over 100 Open fighters enter and the fans for a monday night was a large number. We also have many senior novices. Some of them are MMA fighters trying to get some boxing experience. We had 30 bouts last night. I will be fighting tonight. I will keep you posted.

Former DB had hoped to turn pro; had stamina problems

A former Georgia football player and amateur boxer who died after a Golden Gloves bout in Atlanta on Saturday night had displayed stamina problems in previous matches, a veteran trainer who worked with him on other fights said.

But the boxer's father said he knew of no physical problems and was shocked by the death.

Walker Atrice, 30, collapsed and died shortly after his fight was stopped in the third round because he was apparently too winded to continue.

My LBC (Montana) will have our Golden Gloves this weekend. I'm willing to say now that Duran Caferro will almost certainly be the State and Regional 132 representative. I'll post the rest when I know them, our regionals are April 11-12th.

Some LBC's are making policies about MMA fighters. I think USA boxing may need to do the same thing. If a person has 20+ MMA bouts, should they really be able to box in the novice class. Some might argue that wrestlers have that same advantage. Martial arts fighters too. I don't know how you would really regulate it though. It is hard enough to catch boxers who cheat.

Any thoughts? Maybe this should be moved to its own thread.

Yes, some areas are having increased numbers, but it sometimes is just due to more females. Michigan's numbers were up even if you don't include the female entries. I think having more entries is great. The more people that get involved, the more fans we get.

We have 31 bouts scheduled for tonight's West MI GG semi-finals. The MI GG (East & West combined) had well over 50 open class male entries. At least a half-dozen open female entries too. We don't quite match the Chicago GG's numbers, but we didn't do too bad considering the difference in population.

Roberts - let me know how you did and any other pertinent info.

Hmmm - think this should go through Rules and Regulations and put in the being-revised rule book. Too many "ifs" if LBCs are handling on their own. Is MMA amateur? Did they, are they, get/getting paid? Lots of questions.

I don't think there is a mma amatuer stable. If you are pro in MMA you license fits for porffesional boxing as well so you would be considered a pro.
