Oleg Maskaev V Samuel Peter - Predictions

Swallowed up in the Haye-Enzo hyperbole this solid Heavyweight contest is on saturday night. I am going to stick my neck on the block and go for Maskaev. This fight is no foregone conclusion in my book and i said that before the McCline fight and now believe it even more.

Peter is solid enough and has a big punch but can outboxed and now can also be hurt. Maskaev is a puncher himself, has a good jab and underrated boxing skills. We know he has been KO'd 5 times but is on a good run at the moment and will be confident. Peter will be less rusty as Makaev has been injured. Anyway....i'm going for Maskaev on points. Anybody else?

These two are quite evenly matched, but I can see Peter having a slight edge as a result of being more active and hitting slightly harder.

Definitely wirth a bet. but you would think Peter is more likely to catch him sometime.

I'm certainly far less confident since the McCline fight.

Alot will depend on what Maskaev has left... if he is in his Hasim Rahman form - then I think he will win on points... if he has slipped up then its Peter by early to mid KO.

After that kayo loss to Kirk Johnson Maskaev was on a low and his form suffered. But he has been reinvented & is on very good form. Looking into Overhands Legendary Crytsal Ball i see the big Russian lump knows too much for Peter and isn't going to hand over his belt. A guy more fragile than Maskaev has gone 12 with Peter and beaten him, remember.

Maskaev overcomes some rocky moments and retains his belt. The Ball has spoken, we may as well lock this thread now.

Just to let u guys know Oleg is 7/2 outright, 9-1 on pts and 7-1 to win by ko with bet365. Btw I agree Oleg has a good chance to beat Peter who is pretty poor but can bang. So at those odds I just had to have a bet on Oleg!

I went with Peter KO 10 in PTBF. Maskaev has too much of a china chin.

I don't think Maskaev has a glass jaw which I have heard many people say. I think when he's not mentally right he can be stopped or knocked out, but when he's on his game he can take a few shots.

Obviously, the fact that Maskaev is 39 and coming off a long (19 months?) lay-off is a concern, not to mention those stoppage defeats. But I really don't rate Peter. He's still crude, despite protestations from his trainer that he's going to show his boxing ability in this fight. His power is overrated as well, as far as I'm concerned. So he scored a highlight reel KO of Jeremy Williams. Great. He's not been knocking out the higher level guys. And after watching him against McCline there now have to be some serious doubts about his chin.

If Maskaev had been a bit more active I'd have no hesitation in picking him. As it is, I'll go for a tentative selection of Maskaev UD12, with the outside chance of a late stoppage for the Uzbek.

Now watch Peter display Ali-esque skills before lowering the boom on Maskaev before the 7th........

Agreed. Peter is obviously very heavy handed but the truth is he only has 1 kayo in his last 6 fights, and you'd think a reputed big puncher should really stop Wlad or McCline. Maybe his technique is just too crude?

Henry Akinwande iced Jeremy Williams 12 years ago with 1 shot also, yet nobody ever called him a killer punch. Think the media went a bit nuts over Peter a few years ago.
