My question is if anyone here has seen the fight that is wether Ebihara did win the fight without controversy, as he sure looked to be in control of things in the return, and he was a damn good fighter to begin with was Hiroyuki. He had genuine KO power in his left and the way Torres fell face first to the mat in the remach is testament to that.
I was there that nite and I like most of the fans thought Torres won the fight, the decision so unpopular the Mexican fans (blame it on the Mexicans..LOL) started a riot, somebody punch me as I was trying to get out of the Olympic, when I got home and my wife looks at my eye, she tells me (you been fighting again?)..LOL

Love your photo of a young Alex Ramos lounging by the tree kikibalt, the world at his feet.
He looked a dead cert for glory on his way up, seemed to have it all, along with the personality and looks to boot.
One of Tomorrow's champions, along with Czyz, Bumphus, Ayala and co.

It was a shocking and sudden fall when it all went wrong for Alex, think he had a few "lifestyle" problems at the time, as they say.

Great to hear the Bronx Bomber has got his life back on track now, looks like he's enjoying life again.

Hey Scar . . .I'm with you on Alfredo Urbina. He fought everybody, even picked up an early win over Jose Napoles, at lightweight. Anybody who knows the era, or the competition in Mexico at the time, should check his record.

Thank you for clearing that up Frank. Was the fight close though or was Torres in command throughout? And where you there for the riot when Lionel Rose fought Chucho Castillo? I`ve heard that it was quite the riot to say the least with cars being burned in the parking lot among other things... must have been quite a night!

On a seperate note can anyone shed some light on why Vicenete Saldivar was DQ`ed in his first fight against Emiro Duvergel? I have a 15 minute highlight of this fight and for the life of me I cannot figure out why he was disqualified. Vicente was dropped in the 3rd round but was coming on strong in the 5th and 6th when suddenly the fight was stopped at the beginning of the 7th round.

The crowd seemed none too pleased at the turn of events and voiced their displeasure very loudly and started throwing things into the ring. Whatever anyone can tell me about this fight would be most appreciated.

Hello Frank:

how are you doing?

Have you ever seen the great Eder Jofre fight?

How about his fight with Jose Medel?

And, what is Carlos Palomino doing these days? He seems that he was a very honest individual....Tell us about his personality?

the best thread ever....I am glad of being here, looking at these photos and messages. :TU: :TU: :TU:

No ,I missed the Rose/Castillo riot, can't remember why I wasn't there, I think the Torres/Ebihara fight was close, but not where you couldn't tell who won, lots of action and that made the fight look close, but if you know boxing you could tell that Torres won.

Hi Salsa

Yes, I did see Eder Jofre fight live, both times in 1960 at the Olympic against Jose Medel and Eloy Sanchez, imo I think that Jofre was the second best bantamweight I ever seen, the best I think was Manuel Ortiz.

Palomino is a quiet kind of guy, times that I was around him he didn't talk too much, I don't know him good enough to say if he is honest..LOL,
Tony knows him a lot better then I do.

Joe was amazed, and told Norris he had two world champions and a gym full of prospects, he wasn't going anywhere. "What is keeping you from coming up here?", Goossen asked.

Norris reluctantly confessed to Goossen, "I can't leave town, I'm afraid my wife might cheat on me. She messes with my head when I'm outta town".

Goossen shook his head, and told Norris, he had a decision to make regarding his future in boxing. The Jr. Middleweight champ asked Goossen for his advice. "What should I do?, he asked.

Goossen's answer was short and simple, "Get rid of the bitch".

Norris stayed in San Diego, Goossen stayed in the San Fernando Valley. I wonder how long that marriage lasted?

Hey Rickster,Some of my younger pals say they see Norris in these Disco bars in TJ where the teenagers hang out till dawn. They say he don't talk too good. I don't think you could put his marriage on "The Donna Reed Show"

Hey Frank,Were you at the Forum the night Castillo lost to Rose? I heard the"aficianados" weren't too happy with the decision. I saw a great shot of some of "tus carnales" after they had busted up a few rows of seats. Leave it to those SOB's,they're posing for the press photographer with big shit eating grins on their faces in front of all the carnage. Can't help but love 'em. "La vida no vale nada"

Hey Rick, the old timers told me that "Mantequilla" didn't like to get hit downstairs. That's where Urbina worked him to get the decision. I read later that Napoles figured Alfredo would go there again,so he wanted to finish him early.

"If you need me I'll be at the gym next to the fire station."
"OK Tio",said my nephew. "Vaya bien."
We were visiting my "Suegra"(mother in law). The family conversation was getting stale. I wanted to make my break.

I'd seen Jose Napoles fight a few times. He was one of those fighters you couldn't take your eyes off. There's a publicity shot of Napoles and Hedgemon Lewis squaring off in street clothes before their fight at the Forum.Ruben Olivares was on the card too. Ruben is standing between them and looking up at Napoles. He's got this big sheepish grin on his face like he's looking up to his boyhood hero. Even the bantamweight champ was impressed.

The papers said Napoles was going to train at the 8th Street Gym,between the jail and the fire station, in the same building. The gym was upstairs. A lot of the famous Mexican fighters had worked there when they were in Tijuana training for a fight. The place was small, but thick with atmosphere and history. It was like walking into a museum,in a way. I wondered, "How many times did Kid Azteca skip rope in here? Or did Lauro Salas showdow box in front of this mirror? I bet Baby Arizmendi did his exercises in this corner."

I parked my car around the corner across the street from the police station. At the bottom of the stairs there were a couple of firemen wearing dark blue t-shirts that said "Bomberos" on the back.
"Voy arriba,"(I go upstairs) I said. "Quiero a ver 'Mantequilla' "(I want to see Mantequilla)
"Andale amigo",said one of them."Viene ahorrita."(He 's coming soon) They were laughing and friendly. I felt happy too.
Upstairs there was a kid carrying a bucket and some towels into the ring. A couple of old guys wearing light brown suits were talking in a corner. I'd gotten there in plenty of time. One of the guys in the light brown suit was showing the other guy something about fighting. He was throwing a jab very slowly like wanted his friend to understand what he was doing. When you're in a gym like that and waiting for one of the greatest fighters that ever lived, everyone watching becomes a little more knowledgable about the sport.

The gym was beginning to fill up fast. Downstairs I could hear someone shout,"Llega Mantequilla!" (Mantequilla has arrived). All eyes are looking at the top of the stairs. But the first one to appear is not Jose"Mantequilla" Napoles, but my nephew. He's breathing hard. He spots me and runs up to me almost knocking me down
"Tio", he can hardly get any words out he's so out of breath."Hay un fuego en el cerro. Bien peligroso. Ven rapido!"(There's a dangerous fire on the hill. Come quick)
I'm trying to stay behind my nephew who's running downstairs. I run past Napoles who's followed by two guys wearing khaki pants and sweatshirts. Napoles is wearing a towel over his head. I had to squeeze my body sideways to keep from colliding with him. Napoles's head is down.I don't think he saw me.

I see the two firemen downstairs. They're still having a good time.
"Sigame amigos",I said. Now I was out of breath."Hay un fuego en Canyon Jhonson."(There's a fire in Canyon Jhonson. Follow me)
The two firemen rush to the fire engine.
"Esperate aqui. Vuelvo rapido."(Wait here. I'll return quickly)
Me and my nephew leap into my car. I burn rubber doing a U turn so I can get to the fire station. The fire engine is revved up and ready to follow me to Canyon Jhonson. I asked my nephew what happened and he told me someone was burning trash and the fire got out of control. I'm speeding up the dirt road trying to keep the fire engine in view and avoiding the pot holes. Blam! I hit a big pot hole and I can hear a hub cap come flying off. I check the rear view mirror. The fire engine is still following, lights and sirens going off. I'm zigging and zagging trying to avoid pot holes and keeping the fire engine in sight. I make a hard left turn to go up to my Mother in Law's place. I can see smoke up on the hillside. I look in the rear view mirror, but no fire engine!

I can't stop so I haul ass to the fire. I see my brother in law and half the colonia beating down the fire with rugs. Me and my nephew run up the hillside.
"No te procupes,"(Don't worry), said my brother in law. "Se cabo"(It's over) He was wearing a big "tejana"(cowboy hat). My brother in law was laughing. He put his arm around me. He was all confidence.

I returned to the car and slowly drove down the bumpy road. I turn and see the fire engine at the side of the curb. I pull the car in front of the truck. I see the firemen inside the cab. They're joking with each other.
"Que paso?"I asked. I was sweating heavily.
"No gasolina. Se cabo." The fire engine ran out of gas. They were smiling at me."Todo esta bien?"(everything all right?)
"Si. Todo esta bien." I was exhausted.
I get in the car and head down the hill back towards town. Bam! Bam!. I hit two pot holes. I see another one of my hub caps rolling down the street.
"Screw this,"I said to myself. "I hope my mother in law is making pozole for dinner."

Every six months or so,I'd go down to the"La Gloria" Orphanage with clothes and toys. The orphanage is just off the old road to Rosarito. Every year at Christmas time the kids at my school would kick in all kinds of toys, clothes, and food. I had to give it up. The orphanage always had plenty of stuff. People down there make sure those kids have all the stuff they need.
You see ,everytime I would get back to my van there were always 10 or 15 kids inside. They thought here's the dude who's going to take me home with him. This guy is going to be my dad. I'm tellin' ya' Young Fella' it was the toughest thing to tell those happy kids that they couldn't go home with me. One time I took my wife. She saw this little kid. He looked around 6 months old. He was sitting in a high chair. My wife went up to him. I dispensed with what I had brought and returned to where my wife was with the little kid. The little kid had a hold of her finger and wouldn't let go.
When she finally broke away,I could see she was crying. Those Indian crocodile tears. The only other time I ever saw her cry is when her mother died.

Now I take things down there and pick out a real poor rundown house with plenty of kids standing outside. I knock on the door and say,"Tengo regalos"(I have gifts)
It's funny. The poor people come out and take the bags of stuff and go inside. Nobody says anything. I don't speak either. I don't think they understand why I'm doing this. It's not important. Words mean nothing at at a time like that.

Sorry Kiki, but I'm older than you think. I remember the show very well, and today I'm friends with Paul Peterson, who played "Donna & Alex's" son "Jeff". Carl Betz, who played "Alex" died years ago, and I worked on the "Dallas" set, when the late Donna Reed, who replaced Barbara Bell Geddes, temporarily. Shelly Fabres, who played the oldest daughter, worked for years on the TV series "Coach".

Today, Paul Peterson is a child actor advocate, and challenges laws that do not protect the earnings of child stars.

You see, there is only one thing I know as well, or, actually better than boxing, and that is my day job, in the film industry. I'm third generation in it. I was born in 1952.
