IS BBC BOXING IS FINISHED?

It is my understanding that the only reason the Beeb got back into boxing was Greg Dyke's interest and track record with the sport - he (apparently) started as a sports reporter and covered York Hall shows in the 70's.

Dyke has been forced out of the BBC, Audley has hardly been an unparallelled success and the biggest bouts to date (IMO) Williams-Sinal Sam, Walker-Karmazin have done nothing to bring glory to the Beeb stable.

Where that leaves the future of Terrestrial TV Boxing I don't know?

me too he gets a drilling from nearly every poster.

I don't think the BBC will ditch boxing completely.....it might be scaled back a little but I can see shows being put in the slot after match of the day on sat nights from next season.

Let me tell you that the BBC is fully behind boxing and plans to inject more money into it in 2004 THAN 2003.

Also, it see's the return of MOTD as a perfect way to launch LIVE BOXING.

This is how it will work :

LIVE BOXING - 11.15pm till 1.00pm

SO STOP SPREADING RUMOURS THAT THE BBC IS SCRAPPING BOXING. IT'S 100% BEHIND BOXING!

It see's Boxing and Football as a perfect combination to bring back BBC SPORT TO THE TOP AGAIN!

Much as I see you as a babbling lunatic I agree with you entirely on this and have said something similar myself in the past.

A whole nation full of football fans, sitting at home after the footy with a few bevvies inside them and right after MOTD on comes the boxing. I reckon there's a great chance that 50% might hang on to see what the first fight is like....

It absolutely Pisses me off that people keep saying IS BBC BOXING FINISHED without basing it on nothing except ' now that Greg Dyke has left.......'

BBC have the 3 hottest boxer's Britain has produced for a long,long time in AUDLEY HARRISON, DAVID HAYE and CARL FROCH.

Plus they have guys like ROBIN REID, HERBIE HIDE, CARL THOMPSON, CLINTON WOODS, HOWARD EASTMAN and NICKY COOK.

In the next 2 years, the BBC WILL OVERTAKE SKY in terms of coverage once their BBC SPORTS CHANNEL is up and running!

Ask Joe calzaghe whether he'd prefer to be on the BBC or SKY and he'll say BBC everytime

Hopefully this is an end to the matter!

Well, the reason allegedly is so bitter with the BBC is because when his contract with Sky was running out, he started talking with the BBC so that he could jump ship to them.

The BBC decided to ignore Warren and go with his Rivals instead i.e Hobson etc.

Warren was desperate to join the BBC and hates them now for rejecting him!

As for Calzaghe, the fact is that he is more famous for appearing on shows like Question of sport and TTIAO than for his boxing on Sky.

Calzaghe is desperate to fight on the BBC and has stated it privately many times!

Basically, Warren has been Blackballed by most of the world's promoters and this is why he can't get the BIG FIGHTS!

Both Ricky Hatton and Calzaghe should leave Warren if they want their carreer's to prosper.

You make a lot of good points Nasty which I agree with... I believe that if they carry on in the direction they are going and introduce live shows and also put some fights on earlier then the BBC are in the position to overtake Sky in their coverage of boxing. People are tired of seeing dubious title fights appear on Sky week after week.... they want real quality fights between well matched fighters.... I really believe this is why Frankie has become so rattled and touchy of late, he can see whats going on and he's worried!........

Anyway if the BBC get off their arses and get a dedicated sports channel up and running (why is it taking so long??) that should at least get their boxing on at a better time slot.

As much as I absolutely love boxing on the BBC (not the way it's presented so much but the fact that you're watching with a much bigger audience) it's not a given that any fighter who makes a career on there will be a superstar.

Hatton and Calzaghe are very good fighters but have ZERO personality. They're not funny, they're not interesting, they're not controversial. They're nothing like Benn and Eubank.

Ricky and Joe could have been much more popular country wide had they had all their fights on the beeb, but superstars? I think not.

Good points Kilburn, but couldn't the same be said of Steve Robinson (personality wise). Yet he in Wales was certainly far more popular than Joe. I can think of two reasons why this might be other than the Sky vs BBC/ITV thing.

1) Robinson for many of his defences was the underdog and his opponent was considered a threat, similar things cannot be said of Calzaghe.

2) Calzaghe's Italian roots, yes I do think it plays a part.

As far as Calzaghe, he used to be quite controversial when he'd moan about the lack of achievments of Watt and McGuigan when they were critical of him. Also, as much as American press have tried there is nothing controverisial as DLH, and he's not that funny a guy. Yet, he's huge - but that's because the girls love him. But Calzaghe is a very good looking guy, shouldn't he be Britain's DLH.
