American Olympic Qualifier: 19 national teams already confirmed

A total of 19 nations have already confirmed their participation in the first AIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Cuba's Mr Jorge Guzmàn, President of the Americas Continental Bureau, confirmed April 12th-18th as the dates for the competition that will be held in the capital of Trinidad & Tobago, Puerto España and expressed his delight with the preparation of the event, which will take place at Jean Pierre Complex.

Mr Guzmàn added that Cuba and Ecuador will present full teams, followed by Colombia (10), then Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Canada all with nine boxers.

According to the information now available, Argentina (8 ), Guyana (7), USA (6), Dominican Republic (6) and Virgin Islands (6) will follow the aforementioned countries as the more numerous delegations.

Trinidad & Tobago will present not less than six athletes, five will come from Dominica, four from Jamaica and Barbados, three from Peru and one from El Salvador.

"Brazil and Costa Rica have confirmed their participation too," Mr Guzmàn added. "However, we don't have details about the number of athletes competing for these two countries yet".

Yampier Hernandez is the two time National cahmpion but has failed in all the last international competitions and would have a hard time qualifying so now internationally inexperienced Iran Perez gets the chance. This is probably the biggest chance for a cuban boxer to fail to qualify.

Now, Canada has confirmed 9 athletes (Adam Trupish has already qualifies at 69 kg), so one of these guys is staying home. The smart money would be on light-fly Butler, who's not seen as an international-level fighter.

Lopes is very slick and only 19 or 20 years. He floored Yordenis Ugas at the Panams but was beaten quite clearly. He should make it to Beijing.

27 countries with 151 boxers confirmed for the 1st Americas Qualifier which starts wednesday 12 in Port of Spain. Biggest weight division will be 64 kg with 19 boxers and the smallest number of entries is 9 (48 kg).
Colombia's participation is in jeopardy as they were expected to travel to Venezuela and from there to TT. Due to the political situation it's doubtful they'll get the visas in time.

I saw at least 3 of these boxers compete in the World GG in November '07. Negron is a very tall light-heavy. He is about 6'6". He could do well at the qualifier.

USA's team (only 6 members as 5 boxers have previously qualified):
132: Sadam Ali (Brooklyn, N.Y.) - #1 or 2 to qualify
141: Javier Molina (Commerce, Calif.) - #1, 2 or 3 to qualify
165: Shawn Estrada (E. Los Angeles, Calif.) - #1 or 2 to qualify
178: Christopher Downs (Fort Carson, Colo.) - #1, 2 or 3 to qualify
201: Deontay Wilder (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) - #1 or 2 to qualify
201+: Michael Hunter (Las Vegas, Nev.) - #1 to qualify

With only 19 countries sending boxers and some with just partial teams, I think all weight classes will have 16 or fewer boxers. This means 1 round of preliminary bouts, then the quarter-finals, then semi-finals and finals. Boxers must win at least 2 wins to qualify, but most will need 3 or 4 wins to make it. Hunter must be the Gold Medalist to qualify and he will probably box 3 times to qualify (I'm hoping he gets a bye in the first round if there are more than 8 super-heavyweights).

As always in boxing, the draw can play a huge role. Hopefully are guys get decent draws and don't face the best opposition until the finals or semi-finals.

According to a story in the New York Daily News - he served a voluntary suspension, which will end before the start of the trials and he should be ready to compete at Olympic Qualifier.

From the NY Daily News (Saturday, February 9th)

With time running out on his quest to qualify for the 2008 Olympics, Canarsie's Sadam Ali, on voluntary suspension for testing positive for a banned substance, will accept a three-month ban from the International Amateur Boxing Association, ending a stressful saga for the boxer and his family.

By agreeing to the proposal, Ali, 19, will finish the suspension Feb.22 and be allowed to participate in an Olympic qualifier March 10-18 in Trinidad and Tobago.

Ali, a lightweight, is on the U.S. Olympic team, but still must qualify to compete in Beijing.

Ali was euphoric over the decision.

"This was definitely a tough thing to go through, but I never stopped training and I feel ready to compete in March," Ali said by phone from Colorado Springs. "There were times when I felt like maybe things weren't going to work out, but I always knew I was innocent, and I believed in my attorney and my father and my family that they would make things right. I'm just looking forward to qualifying for the Olympics and putting all this behind me."

Alfonso, Hunter, Bence and Oscar Rivas from Colombia all deserve to qualify.

Because the qualifiers is set up, the one who gets left out might come down to who gets the worst draw.

Ali came down with bronchitis during the trip and was prescribed a cocktail of medications by the accompanying USA team doctor, Frank Filiberto, that included an antibiotic, a mild antihistamine, Claritin, and cough medicine with a decongestant.

Filiberto, who has worked with USA Boxing for 25 years, theorized that the medications he prescribed may have had a coagulating effect to produce cathine, a banned stimulant closely related to amphetamines, for which Ali later tested positive.

He has to finish in the top 2 in Trinidad.

Because there only remains 2 open spots for the Americas, nobody from the tournament in Guatamala will qualify (at Bantamweight).
