Pavlik v Lockett
Lockett is untested at this level but hopefully he can rise to the task and pull off an upset
He certainly hits like a horse, the question is whether he can get these shots off.
However he would be stupid to turn down this opportunity and his only professionl loss was years ago with weight making being the main problemh

He hits like a horse? He may do against Lee Blundell and Kai Kauramaki, but step up even one tiny level and ask Ryan Rhodes and Powers about his power.Coco wrote:Lockett is untested at this level but hopefully he can rise to the task and pull off an upset

This is a big move up. Locketts power is against lower level fighters and won't even dent these boys.
There is no doubt in my mind in Locketts power but the problem is landing them against the better boys.Maelstrom wrote:He hits like a horse? In the case of Rhodes, I did not feel he committed himself enough to really try and win.
If he did he would have got knocked out

I'm a good friend of Gary's, and I will be travelling out to NY to support him. I'm over the moon this chance has come. Win or lose, it'll lead to a good few paydays!!
Gary is no fool, he knows he's never boxed at this level, and that he will be a massive underdog, but team Pavlik ARE taking a huge risk!
Pavlik likes to throw alot of punches, but he's vulnerable when he does so (high chin). If Gary tags him, Pavlik WILL go!!
That said, this will be a very tough fight for Gary, and I believe a KO is pretty much his only chance. However, Gary will push Pavlick.
Both Pavlik and Gary can be outboxed, so I'm not expecting a chess match, but I am expecting a hum dinger!!!!!
Both like a fight, both have good chins. This should be good!
Lets not forget Gary is representing the UK, and we should all get behind him, as he's a nice bloke, who very much deserves this opportunity.
ps Hello Gary, I know you're reading this, lol.

Knocked out in the first minute?! He's only lost once and avenged that...Pavlik is not Superman.Red Medicine wrote:So you're assuming that Lockett will last 3 rounds? I don't. I'm not sure why you say Lockett has a puncher's chance - he doesn't have a single top 100 middleweight on his record, and his KO percentage is about 60%, which is average.

You can tell if someone has a good punch no matter what level of competition they've faced, Lockett has that 1 shot power to trouble anyone.
When he catches them right, they are hurt.
I just hope he relaxes coming into this fight, we all saw what happened to Macca on Saturday when IMO he let the occasion get to him.
Pavlik likes to throw alot of punches, but since he's stepped up in class he hasn't been taking his opponent out early, its usually a grinding down affair.

Really surprised about this matchup. Lockett is good at domestic and Euro level but Pavlik is world class. His only chance, because he can punch, is catching Pavlik by surprise early on, but its very unlikely to happen. Pavlik would outpoint Lockett if it went the distance very easily, but Pavlik will be looking for the KO.

Yes agree, it's hard to define exactly, but you can tell when someones a naturaly concussive puncher - something about the fluid way they sling the shots over, getting full weight behind, plus the speed they're thrown at too. Lockett seems to have it.Old bones Ian wrote:You can tell if someone has a good punch no matter what level of competition they've faced, Lockett has that 1 shot power to trouble anyone.

Yes Rhodes going the distance with him looks bad, but did Gary really land on him? I doubt it...
Pavlik will see this as a stroll in the park, and if he hangs his chin out there, he'll be in for a big shock I reckon.
And Lockett doesn't strike me as the type to let the occasion get to him.
Lockett v Pavlik
I must say I'm over the moon about this!!
I'm assuming this is a British forum so as my brother says above "lets get behind him" He's a decent guy and he deserves this!!
This could be another belt for Britain so instead of arm chair critics pointing out the negatives lets get some momentum going for this!!
I too will be going to NY or NJ to watch this and I cannot wait!!
All it takes for Lockett to do him is one shot and he WILL tumble. He's a come forward fighter and this is the perfect for Gary as he's a natural counter puncher.
This will be over in 5 rounds tops and Lockett will need to throw it all on the line!
Its by no means impossible - Boxing is a wonderful sport where the underdog can have his day; just ask Kirkland Laing (bt Roberto Duran) James Buster Douglas (bt Mike Tyson) Lloyd Honeygan (bt Don Curry) Hasim Rahman (bt Lennox Lewis) and numerous other examples of people being given next to no chance and coming through!!!
He's got a chance and at this level thats just dandy!!! he's not a fool he knows he's got to bang him or get banged - that'll bring out the best in him I'm sure!!!
One thing is for sure this is certainly not a walk in the park for Kelly Pavlik and if he thinks that he'll be giving his belts away at the first hurdle!!!
C'mon Gary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ps Even Bob Arum is showing more respect than a lot of these forum posters http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing ... id=3288632

I hate to say it, but I think that this will be case - but, we all know Pavlik is open and has been tagged in the past (Taylor and also one of his earlier fights that I have on video), so it can be done....Maelstrom wrote:He hits like a horse? Should be a good payday for him and a good outing for his crew.
Looking on Boxrec, I see that Lockett is fighting on the 22nd of March - anyone know who he's fighting?
Locketts power is unproven in world class so it is hard to judge. In much the same way that Enzo Macc was labelled as a "devastating puncher" prior to stepping up against Haye.
Its fine having power, but you have to be able to land it.
The key here is motivation. If Pavlik is not up for this fight, which I suspect he isn't really, and Lockett trains to the absolute maximum, then this fight will probably see its way into the second half.
But the gulf in class will be apparent. Kelly does strike me as a guy who doesn't look amazing (in terms of polish) on TV but is a different prospect when facing him in the ring.

I am delighted for Gary. He will be getting the best pay day of his career, by a mile, and the fact he has got the contest completely vindicates his decision not to fight the IBF champ Arthur Abraham. He was offered peanuts for that, and now he gets good money for taking on the world number one. Pavlik will be a big favourite, but Gary can bang. Pavlik is a come forward type, and is not difficult to hit, so Gary is not without a chance. Remember how Jermain Taylor decked him, and Taylor not a noted puncher. Even if he loses with credit, this fight will be good for Gary. In the event of him winning, he hits the jackpot.
He has been a pro 11 years, had some health and injury issues to overcome, and has served his time. Good luck to him.

To be honest - is Lockett even proven at domestic level? I don't want to be critical and I aint saying its his fault... but how many top ten Middleweights domestically has Lockett fought.WildWaylon wrote:Really surprised about this matchup. Its debatable whether Blundell or Rhodes were in the top ten.
Not saying he isn't, but I would have like to have seen him fight more of our top ten.
He's very hard to outbox for the full 12 rounds IMO, he carries his power late and has excellent stamina.Max Molyneux wrote:Pavlik's not hard to outbox though.
It's a great opportunity for Lockett, but I really rate Pavlik and I don't think Gary will get much change from this one

What's the joke? You wouldn't give Gary a punchers chance? Are you saying it's laughable to consider that fact that Gary might knock someone out, who is not hard to hit?ebeneezer wrote:JimmyJamJerusalem wrote: Gary is no fool, he knows he's never boxed at this level, and that he will be a massive underdog, but team Pavlik ARE taking a huge risk!

C'mon, quit being haters, and support him. Shit he deserves this opportunity, he's been slogging his guts out for years, and has been shit on loads of times.

Pavlik took huge shots from Miranda and Taylor in their second fight and kept going. He only went down in the first Taylor fight when he stuck his chin out and showboated.
Lockett's "power" couldn't put a dent in a washed up Ryan Rhodes and hasn't proved his punching power against anyone even remotely resembling a world class opponent.
Lockett is totally out of his league here and will be beaten accordingly
Ebeneezer: I don't think anyone is saying he's the favourite to winbut what they are saying is that he has a punchers chance and the styles are right.
i.e.
Re The Ryan Rhodes fight - firstly RR ran away from him all night TRYING to be stylish and was convincingly beaten on points. Secondly I know he had a virus but didn't pull out of that fight (not making excuses here but its well documented he's suffered with health issues in the past)
Re Gary - he is (if you've not clocked this yet) a counter puncher who performs when people are come forward fighters why try to KO him.
Pavlik was put down by Taylor (no noted for his power) as he carries his chin high when throwing shots.
Style wise this is perfect for Lockett as Pavlik hasn't got a great defence he simply goes out to bang people out (like Gary) so its a case of bang or be banged.
So whats so funny about that then.....?
I'd urge people to get behind him and support the guy as he's british after all. Its much more honourable than sitting there making snide remarks when you've done little (if anything) to develop this oh so wise opinion.

And while I'm at it where people are commenting on the class of his opponents I'm inclined to think he's a victim of his own success here. Let me tell you that there aren't many volunteers queuing up to fight him for that WBU title like all the other recents champs who have defended it everyother month.... and there is a reason for that: that he generally wins by KO. He's had that title for well over 18 months and made 2 defences of it - tells a story that does!!
Do you know at some stages of his career he's had either no fights in a 12 month or at most 1 or 2 for this very reason. The amount of people who have been supposed to fight him and mysteriously pulled out or taken easier fights is unreal so THIS IS WELL OVERDUE in my book.
GET BEHIND HIM BOXREC HE COULD SHOCK YOU YET!!!!

He got knocked down by Taylor while sticking his chin out and showboating. In the rematch Taylor hit him with huge shots and didn't come close to putting him down.Pavlik was put down by Taylor (no noted for his power) as he carries his chin high when throwing shots.
Kelly also walked through massive shots from Edison Miranda,a more proven puncher than Lockett at top level.
Lockett is totally out of his depth in this fight and all the "lets get behind him coz he's British innit" Welsh posters are in for another Haye/Maccarnelli let down
Well said that manRiddick Blowe wrote:People seem to be getting mixed up with levels again.
Saying Lockett 'can punch' is meaningless in regard to this fight.
I remember Lockett losing to that Belorussian journeyman.
IMO, Pavlik isn't great, but he has proven he can hang tough at the highest level, taking a succession of brutal flush shots from Jermain Taylor and coming back to KO him, as well as some impressive other world level wins. And whoever said that Lockett punches harder than Taylor mustn't understand the gulf in class between british level and world class.
Lockett has proved absolutely nothing.
Anyone who doesnt realize this is a routine easy win for Pavlik is a little confused.
