Carlos Palomino's comeback

I came across Carlos Palomino's record today, and what really strikes out to me is that the man came back after an 18 year absense and fought a top contender in Wilfredo Rivera. Palomino was nearly 50 years old and went the distance with Rivera, who was fresh off a defeat to DLH and a pair of competetive fights with Whitaker just a year and a half prior. Some may consider this post pointless; I found it a bit intriguing.

I remember watching the Palomino-Rivera fight on Univision. I figured Palomino would get smoked, but it turned out to be a reasonably competitive fight.

Now that I think about it, I also saw Palomino fight on that horrific ESPN2 card a few months before he fought Rivera. The first fight on that card was Palomino against Rene Arredondo (Palomino knocked him out in the first).

However, the main event was Gerrie Coetzee against Iran Barkley at Heavyweight. No, that is not a typo.

Granted, this was back in the days before ESPN2 had Friday Night Fights. Their quality control was not the greatest back then. Even still, who in their right mind thought Barkley-Coetzee was TV worthy.

I remember the Barkley-Coetzee fight. It was bizarre. Barkley looked like a completely different person. He was completely bald and about 60 pounds heavier than he had been. He used to be a ripped 160. In this fight he was all flab. Coetzee was in his 40's and making an ill advised comeback.

Coetzee started out well, but began to fade in the middle rounds. Barkley eventually won by TKO.

To tell you the truth, it was more interesting than the fights that ESPN usually has. ESPN fights are almost always gimmie fights between a prospect and a journeyman who has little chance. Their standards have always been low.

Getting back to Palomino, it really was pretty impressive for him to do as well as he did at that age against a fairly decent opponent.

I recall seeing the Coetzee-Barkley fight on ESPN Classic a few months ago.
