Mitchell v Johanssen - a second look.

Post by jamesmcdonnell »

Noticed on the re-run, that in fact Johanssen didn't run out of steam at all.

Midway through the 9th, Mitchell lands an absolute sickener of a left hook right into the side of Johanneson, you see Carl wince, and he's completely buggered from that point. He never really recovered, and Kev followed up with another left and rights to the ribs. You could see all the resistance go from Carl.

Also, after a second look, that 6th round, whilst still bad for Mitchell, doesn't look quite as bad as I remembered it.

Did anyone have Mitchell down on points before the stoppage? And if so, by how many?

No, he swept the first three, and was competitive in every round. I think level would be about fair at the time of the stoppage at best, Mitchell was for me a round up I think.

Mitchell did show a very nice ramrod jab in that fight which impressed me, especially when he doubled and tripled it.

Have you rewatched the fight Terrence. I was of the same opinion as you first time around (except the scores) I have Mitchell the 7th and 8th rounds, and the first three too. I gave Carl the others, but the 4th and 5th were quite close rounds.

I suspect Carl is not as faded as people think, he was doing very well until that body shot landed, the deterioration was very marked once that shot landed.

Most importantly i was hoping they would pull Mitchell out during the 6th round, he was getting hit plenty of times..then from then he came back...what a crackin' fight!!

Wasn't it a great night of boxing eh? Mitchell-Johannsen followed by Haye-Macca.

I was happy as Larry (not Holmes) sitting down on the sofa at midnight last week. Absolutely brilliant.

We'll have some more of that please....

I'd give Mitchell the benefit of the doubt here. It was his first step up in class of any sort and he came through it showing some nice skills and a lot of heart in the process. I don't think anyone is saying this is as good as Mitchell is going to get and lets see how he steps on from here.

I just hope he hasn't been held back too long and picked up too many bad habits.

Yeah, watched it the other night but did not do a running total. I just felt that Carl's shots were a lot heavier. I think Carl hit him big in the 5th as well.

Carl was so slow versus Gomez and even slower in this one. Last two times I have seen him in the flesh there was a marked change than the time I watched him versus Femi.

No disrespect to either guy but Carl was destroyed trying to get to Euro level and Mitchell really struggled. More speed and sharpness on those shots and he would have been out. KDn should have been called in round 6 and with the other shots he took he'd have lost a few points for that one.
See I saw it the same way, at the time it looked like Carl was beating the hell out of him, but in truth, apart from the 6th, Mitchell was in all of those rounds, and never was really badly hurt. It should have been a knockdown in the 6th, and I wonder whether if that had been given, whether it could have changed the course of the fight. Mitchell might have felt the fight was slipping away and gone in a bit more recklessly.

When Mitchell boxed off of the back foot, he looked very good at times, his jab was very nice and he showed good movement, but he fights with both arms by his sides most of the time, and that will prevent him getting beyond domestic level.

I think Mitchell has quite a bit of potential, but they have to curb some of his bad instincts and habits.

Carl is a good domestic fighter, but short of European level, and the likes of Leva Kiryokasan would have annihilated Mitchell if he fought with such reckless abandon.

I too am giving Mitchell the benefit of the doubt, could be the perfect fight to teach him some hard lessons after bowling over fighters who were extras from Dawn of the dead.

After watching the BBC repeat yesterday I have two points.

1. Neilly and McKenzie should never be given a mic again. Talk about Waldorf and Stadler!

2. Kevin Mitchell might just be a bit better than we give him credit for. He is still a young man who needs to work on his stamina. BUT he has a great chin, big heart and an under rated dig.

All he needs to do is buy some boxing boots instead of wearing those banana shoes!

I think the fight was there to be won for Johannson. He should have applied more pressure, stepped up the gas and taken Mitchell out.

Fair play to Mitchell though, he was game as hell and proved his heart in this fight. British level is his limit though.

Pedant's corner - the correct spelling of this fighter's name is Carl Johanneson
