Wilder won 6-5 over Deivi Blanco. I believe Blanco is decent, so that's probably not a bad win for Deontay. No Cuban results yet - Ecuador had two wins in three fights so far and Brazil is 2-0.

Why doesn't USAB give him a damn flu shot? How many times does he need to get the flu before they do something?

Before, during or after his flu? Taking one while having the flu won't fix it. I had my flu shot this year - and got a touch of the strain that I didn't get innoculated for.

They should have done it for all the Olympians before the winter or at least given Wilder a flu shot shortly after his first bout with the flu.

And how do you know they didn't? This year's flu shot did NOT stop to other strain from attacking. :o

3 years of getting the flu shot with Michigan's cold winters and harsh weather changes and I have had 0 bouts of the flu. Prior to that, I would usually get the flu once each winter.

Downs-De La Cruz will be interesting.

I'm assuming the order of bouts is the same as the bracket. This means, at 54kg, either Claudio Marrero or Yankiel Leon will be out of the Olympics, while the bottom side of the draw is probably a little easier. I'm not sure why they would take two entrants from this tournament and zero from the second one in Guatemala. If they took one and one, they would get the two best fighters, but AIBA does seem to like to set up events to increase the chances of boxers from small countries.

Evening session day 3:

Thirty-three-year-old American Christopher Downs stole the plaudits on Friday at the 1st AIBA Americas Olympic Qualification Tournament in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago after sensationally beating Cuba's Julio De La Cruz Peraza 15:6 in their 81kg quarterfinal. The defeat was the first for one of boxing's proudest nations in 12 bouts and leaves USA with the only unbeaten record with four wins from four.

In what was the final bout of the day, Downs strode to an astonishing 3:0 and 12:0 lead after rounds one and two before Cruz Peraza fought back in round three to 12:5 down however, by that stage, Downs was tactically masterful in the ring. The out was from then on a formality for the 2007 Pan Am Games bronze medallist.

With two Olympic spots on offer in the 81kg division, Downs is now only one win away from an Olympic berth.

Meanwhile, one of the twins participating in this event Oscar Molina (MEX) ground out a hard fought 10:5 win over Gilbert Lenin Castillo (DOM) in their 69kg quarterfinal while the sole Virgin Island brother remaining in the competition John Jackson also progressed through to the 69kg semifinals, beating Diego Chaves (ARG) 20:10. Both have been drawn against different opponents in the semifinals as they chase the two Olympic qualification spots available in the division.

Saturday sees the second day of quarterfinals at the 1st AIBA Americas Olympic Qualification Tournament with USA's Sadam Ali up against Jesus Cuadro of Venezuela in the 60kg class starting at 14:00 (local time).

69:
Carlos Banteur (CUB)-Omar Moreno (VEN) 13-5
Oscar Molina (MEX)-Gilbert Castillo (DOM) 10-5
John Jackson (ISV)-Diego Chávez (ARG) 20-10
Pedro Lima (BRA)-Christian Peguero (PUR) 11-3

81:
Washington Silva (BRA)-Lennon Bannis (DMA) RSC-1
Carlos Negrón (PUR)-Augustina Azea (HAI) 11-0
Luis González (VEN)-Julio Castillo (ECU) 8-3
Christopher Downs (USA)-Julio César La Cruz (CUB) 15-6

Does anybody know if the bronze medallists are going to be determined by a box-off between losing semi-finalists? Or will the bronze medal go to the guy who lost to the gold medallist (a eventuality I woulkd hate)?

Interesting. I had always thought the bronze medalists were those who lost in the semis and that the #3 was the guy who lost to the eventual gold medalist. Are they actually going to add another day/bout to have a box-off between the two losing semifinalists? I'm a bit confused.
