Many people view boxing as a brutal, barbaric sport. They don’t think that two people bashing each other up should be viewed as a form of entertainment. And they believe that the sport should be banned. It’s an ignorant argument.

I’ve been a fan of the fascinating sport for a few years now. Before I started watching it, no one viewed me as a violent or sick-minded person, and I can tell you that I haven’t changed over the years.

I would be a liar to tell you that boxing isn’t a dangerous sport. Of course it is. I’ve witnessed, in person, ringside, someone get knocked out unconscious. It was a nervous experience, paramedics were on the scene immediately and as with 99.9% of the time, 2 minutes later, the boxer was sitting up, regaining his senses.

Boxing compares favourably against water sports, horse riding and even rugby in terms of people killed per year. Should these sports be banned? Ignorance.

With a lot of controversial issues there is a balance that has to be met. And boxing is no different, and I believe the right measures are in place, to make sure that the sport is as safe as it can be, whilst being entertaining at the same time.

In December 2000, the labour MP, Paul Flynn stated that he would like to see a ban on blows to the head during matches. This is a laughable comment. Banning head blows would decrease the enjoyment level of the sport considerably. Imagine telling an F1 driver that he can’t go any faster than 50mph. Ignorance.

If boxing was banned, it would inevitably lead to illegal, ‘underground’ events. These would be far less safe.

Crime levels would increase. Boxing takes a lot of young people off the streets, and away from crime. They channel their aggression, and learn to control it in a safe and enjoyable way.

No one forces anyone to box. A fighter goes into the ring, fully aware of the dangers. It’s their own decision.

Certain people need to know the facts, and know boxing before making such mindless, ignorant calls for the abolishment of this great sport.

According to the national statistics bureau boxing is only 37th on the list of most dangerous sports.

This is spot on.

A couple of recommendations from myself:

I for one wouldn't object to area title fights being reduced to 8 rounds.

I for one cannot see why isotonic drinks have not yet been allowed in the corners, even though the Board encourage fighters to consume it during training, prior to a contest and immediately after a contest.

The point regarding rehydration is a valid one and I can't see why a fighter can't take on isonic fluids it between rounds.

Saying that, I'm not sure what benefit a couple of gulps of isotonic Lucozade during the one-minute would make. I mean, you're going full pelt in that ring and from my experience it was water being sprayed on my face that refreshed me more than the couple of gulps I'd take in, which basically just helped get rid of that incredibly dry feeling you got in your mouth.

i agree, nothing wrong with taking Isotonic drinks. Also, i dont think the british board allow Enswell (may be spelt wrong) to help with the cuts. Anyone know why that is?

It's not about feeling refreshed. Isotonic drinks (not lucozade, which is basically pop with loads of sugar in) replace vital fluids and chemicals lost through exercise, such as potassium. Failure to replace lost fluids can hamper performance, and ultimately lead to dehydration. I know from experience on this one.
