They will fight on finals day. Last time out at the American qualifiers the one who lost to the gold medalist got the last spot. But in Europe they had to fight a Box-Off. I guess AIBA wanted to unite the system the same for everybody. I agree that it's much better to let them fight for it and not depend on two other boxers.boxmel wrote:Interesting. I had always thought the bronze medalists were those who lost in the semis and that the #3 was the guy who lost to the eventual gold medalist. Are they actually going to add another day/bout to have a box-off between the two losing semifinalists? I'm a bit confused.

It's obviously the better way to determine the third qualifier.boxmel wrote:I DO have a problem - it will effect USA's Javier Molina if he loses to Iglesias Sotolongo from Cuba Monday evening and Chris Downs, too. Wonder if that's a coincidence. Thanks - I don't have a problem with either way of deciding. Just was the first I've heard. May the best man win.
Wait a minute Mel. Did you reply to yourself just then?

Can't believe a guy can beat a Cuban and then get OUTSCORED in the second round (is that even right?) 3-4 days later .emile wrote:Congrats to new Olympic qualifiers

Isn't the Lima loss a pretty big upset?
Lima losing is definatly a big upset... esp. from a 19 year old from the Virgin Islands who seemingly came out of nowherelap wrote:Can't believe a guy can beat a Cuban and then get OUTSCORED in the second round (is that even right?) 3-4 days later .emile wrote:Congrats to new Olympic qualifiers

Jackson is only 19 - who knows, he might be the best fighter from the Virgin Islands since Julian Jackson (and their super heavy Clayton Manuel, who probably won't make Beijing is only 17). Jackson lost in the first round in Chicago, but only by 30-25 against Aliasker Bashirov.

The box-offs are because in some weights there are odd vacancies AFTER the World Championships. I'm sure it will happen in the other continents as well.
The Total Olympic Qualification vacancies for the Americas are 60 and after the World Championships there are 46 left.

In either scenario he would be going to the Olympics; having him win in T&T takes the pressure off, that's for sure. Now we just have to hope that Molina and Downs Bronze today - leaving Estrada the lone U.S. boxer in Guatamala.Deontay qualifing here i felt was needed, rather than to have him win the next one.
Seems like a very good showing for Ecuador - I don't remember them being much of a factor in the amateurs recently. Also good showing by the Virgin Islands - Julian Jackson seems to be doing some good for them.
Bit of a disaster for Brazil, but they are positioned to clean up a whole bunch of places in Guatemala.
