What belt will Haye go for?

Post by Autobarn »

...when he moves up to heavyweight, to build himself up the rankings.

Wlad's IBF title is tied up with Povetkin having won the 4-man elimination tournament & mandatory position.

Though there is Wlad's WBO belt also.

WBA is locked away in Germany, with Chagaev fighting for Universum.

WBC is held by Peter, but could be held up by Vitali KLitschko who is entitled to a shot at Peter whenever he wants (IMO Vitali won't make it to the fight due to being injury prone).

Adam Booth told icSouthlondon,
"In the space of 16 weeks David fought Mormeck and Maccarinelli and that's a hell of a schedule," he said. "The next one is going to be at heavyweight and David needs to make sure he puts on the weight properly - so he is 220lbs but just as fit and sharp as he was on Saturday.

"It's a question of when David is physically ready, but ideally the next fight will be a final eliminator for a world title. We've got to talk to the governing bodies but you would hope the belts he holds at cruiserweight would help in him being high in their ratings."
I go for the WBC. Obviously one of the belts he held at cruiser was a WBC, and he KO'd the WBC#12 Boni in the first round.

McCall and Rahman are 2 names that seem to be under consideration.

WIth HW the two most valuble belts are the WBO cos Klitschko holds it and he's probably the man in the devision having held one in the past and unified a portion, and the WBC because that will always meen something. However I am very much of the opinion what ever he gets he should use to unify the situatio there a bit.

WBC or WBA as both histrocially have given CW moving up good rankings.

I can't see David challenging for a title until early next year at the very earliest, so the politics will have disapated by then.

It would be great to see Haye go straight into a final eliminator.
I see him only fighting twice a year but he won't have any soft touches, meaning he ll still probably achieve whatever in the same space of time as if he'd had a few tuneups.
An ideal fight would be an eliminator against Chris Byrd, can there be a top heavyweight that is more made for Haye, expecially with Byrd being shot?

thing is, Klit has to face Povetkin for the IBF when Povetkin chooses to go for it. This will hold up Klitschko. Unless Wlad vacates, but I get the impression thatHaye doesn't want to win a vacant title.

I like the WBC route myself. Bonin win points in that direction, fight a couple of has-beens or green contenders, then try and get the Gomez-Virchis winner and then Sam Peter if he's still around.

don't reckon Byrd gets any more elims after Povetkin beat the stuffing out of him (in an IBF elim-for-an-elim).

I like JC Gomez myself with the WBC route. JCG is highly ranked (WBC international champ) after a pair of wins over McCall, and is 1 of the top 3 cruiserweights ever (great subplot!) who's rediscovered some ambiton at heavyweight. JCG has some real southpaw skills, but his weight hurts his stamina and movement. I'd really like to see Haye vs Gomez. IMO ambitious promoter Arena Box would jump for one of his fighters to make his name off Haye.

WBC or WBA. I want to see him getting a belt and then having a super fight with Wlad. Plus WBA and WBC will rank him highly

Chagaev look very beatable. The winner of Peter-Vitali is going to be very beatable. Vitali is old and Peter is a technical disaster.

Despite the IBF's knee jerk forcing of mandatories, it seems Klit will fight Thompson first. That would leave an eliminator opening with the WBO. Highest available is Dimitrenko, but can't for one moment see Universum willing to put Sasha in with Haye. They might give it up, and Haye fights next highest available challenger - Ibragimov. That seems pretty plausible to me.

WBC is tied up forever and a day. Peter to face Vitali, with the winner fighting the winner of Virchis/Gomez. The WBC might give Haye an eliminator-type fight - Toney or Rahman? - but won't be a final eliminator.

A fight with Rahman, Chambers or Ibragimov again would put him one step away from IBF mandatory status.

Through the WBA route he'd have to go with Ruiz or Meehan to get the Chagaev/Valuev winner.

Whatever route he takes there's a group of names that will put him one fight away from mandatory status. I'd personally go with Ibragimov, who has a high ranking with both Klit's boards.

rahman is a good shout..but mccall should be steered away from, oliver is so so durable that he could make haye look awful in the latter rounds and maybe even topple him..

haye needs to fight someone that is vulnerable early doors !!

The WBC would be the best belt!

Sam Peter is very beatabke - I think WLAD would be a good FIGHT but the belts crap.

I think Wlad would be too scared - he guys in not HEAVYWEIGHT Champ in my eyes, scared of hisnown shadow as someone on here once said.

Haye, imo, need to fight someone who is taller and slower than him.

I think Haye can do it 0 he can win the Heavyweight title - but I think
(despite what I said earlier) he should stay away from Vitali. Vitali is technically crap but he is hard to get to.

Good question Autobarn; but doesn't it just sum up what's wrong with boxing today? :P

If Haye wants some rounds as a heavyweight he should go for Mccall. I would rate Haye more if he took on the aged but still teak tough Mccall. Rahman would be a good win but Mccall would prepare Haye better. One thing is Haye from listening to him seems to think he can knock out anyone. It would be interesting to see what his plan B is when he finds his "hayemakers" aren't doing the job against a granite-chinned Heavyweight. I actually think Haye has nice boxing skills when he chooses to use them and shouldnt solely rely on his power.

i think we are getting a bit carried away with haye, the likes of klit etc are streets ahead of maccarinelli and bonin.

david must just take one thing at a time, he did not look like a potential world heavyweight champion when he laboured against frag etc.

much as i want haye to do it, lets be realistic please.

I think he needs a fight against someone whom he has to break down. So he can get plenty of rounds. McCall is still dangerous - see the late rds of his 2 fights with JC Gomez who had been outclassing him - but he said after the Gomez fights he's had enough of "fighting young guys."

definitely. one step at a time. that's how he won the cruiserweight titles. like cruiser, he has to get the right fights. the heavyweights are bigger but easier to hit.

Gomez-Virchis didn't happen and went off the schedule. Why not target Gomez? That will have Haye in the WBC top 5.

Wouldn't mind Haye-Chazz Spoon in London, to perhaps play off Bruno-Witherspoon. Nice little subplot.

Haye wants Wlad. Why? Because he's generally regarded as the divisions' #1. The belts don't mean shit anymore. You get a WBC ranking by buying their Youth title and fighting 35 year olds. Maybe it still holds a bit of prestige over the other three, but really you have to be looking at the fighter these days and not the belt when your looking for #1s

Autobarn - Virchis/JCG is back on and rescheduled for September. Oener has done a bit of whispering sweet nothings which seems to have worked.

I think he should have a warm uf fight then go for Euro title. Hopefully Skelton beats Sam. I think Skelton v Haye would be interesting.

I think the best thing to happen would be

1) Povetkin to beat Wlad for the IBF. Pov's doing all the right things and can get even better after winning the 4-man IBF elimination tourney. He has better workrate and fitness than anyone else at the weight.

2) Haye to work his way to a Peter fight and beat the fat/powerful Nigerian.

3) Haye and Povetkin to unify. This will be a superfight. Haye's power/sharp shooting v Povetkin's class and workrate.

4) Winner to fight Odlanier Solis Fonte - another highly decorated ama who at last seems to be getting in shape. When Solis is ready that is.

Vitali will enforce his WBC shot one day, but when? And if he does will he pull another sickie?

All very true, but a WBC belt will be a great bargaining tool to get Wlad into the ring, not to mention the purse split!

I don't think Haye can beat Vitali- he's the only guy I don't give Haye at least a chance against at heavy. We know for sure that Vitali will be able to take shots from Haye and he'd get enough of his own shots home to stop Haye IMO.

The Klitschko bros are terrible for boxing. America warmed to them because they disliked Lennox Lewis. But neither Wlad nor Vitali are willing to take risks. Wlad just wants to play at fencing, so no one can get close enough to spark him out. Vitali was poised to dominate the heavyweights after battering Danny Williams yet wouldn't/couldn't even make his defence vs Hasim Rahman!

I see some signs of quality fighters coming up and hope to heck that the Klits either get splattered or just retire.

Looking forward to that one. I like Arena Box. IMO Gomez wins this one. Still think Arena would see a lot of potential in Gomez-Haye. If Vitali is going to be faffing about, stop-starting, messing about with this shot he "deserves" at Peter, Haye-Gomez might be a good filler. They have been making noises for Herbie (or at least HH was), which was a non starter.

It's great that there is some heavyweight hope in Haye, Povetkin and Solis. I know these men have a lot of sceptics, but even Evander Holyfield had his doubters six years after he won the undisputed heavyweight title. IMO if you're good enough, size is less of an issue.
