I don't think anyone's giving Tim any stick, I just think it unwise for a guy who has been out of the ring for four years to be making ANOTHER comeback at 50, especially given that he was knocked out by Lou Savarese 5 years ago.Top Dog wrote:Tim has been taking a lot of flack on this thread aint heBut lets be honest here guys, is he wants to have 6 round fights with guys outside the top 10, I think that's fair enough. He still looks in pretty good nick, and he's got a wise head on him, I'm sure he could teach a thing or 10 to some of the so called prospects we have!!
If Foreman can fight for a world title at 45 or 46 whatever it was, then a 6 rounder against a sub top ten fighter over here cant exactly be any harder now can it?
As long as he's not taking mad full blown shots all day long he would do ok, hell he might even surprise a few guys. Either way I'm sure he'll know if he's still got it after the very first back, he aint going to let shit guys batter him, too proud for that.
Jesus, just noticed Savarese is still fighting.
Maybe I'm being a namby pamby, I'd just hate for Tim to take a shot and end up badly hurt.

George Foreman is a one off freak of nature mate, Tim Witherspoon is like all other old fighters- an old fighter.Top Dog wrote: If Foreman can fight for a world title at 45 or 46 whatever it was, then a 6 rounder against a sub top ten fighter over here cant exactly be any harder now can it?
.
Jerry Quarry was a lot younger than Spoon when a clubfighter gave him his life shortening punches in a 6 rounder. Greg Page was a decade younger than Spoon when he got messed up by a guy he would have toyed with a few years earlier.
Fighting past 40 is dangerous.

Christ a 50 year old against a 60 year old! Maybe they could ger Frazier in the mix, he had an exhibition recently didn't he, and looked in surprisingly good shape for a pensioner.KOJOE90 wrote:I really have my doubts the BBBofC will let a 50 year old Tim Witherspoon fight in the UK. They would be taking a massive gamble but not as much as Timmy will with his health.
Earnie Shavers is having an exhibition next month maybe Witherspoon could join him?
Witherspoon was always a very clever fighter with a bitch of a right hand but was usually not very dedicated when it came to training and was always blowing his money.
Having said that I always quite liked the guy, but entering the ring at 50 is a crazy idea.

Agreed, I can't the BBBC licensing Witherspoon at all.overhand_right wrote:Sorry i dont have the link but the ageing Spoon has been sparring with Pele Reid and a couple of others. Hes convinced he'll be fighting over here in the next month or two.
Apart from being suicidal, am i alone in thinking a man of Spoons age will never get a licence to box in England. No way, no how.
I knew all these dinosaurs would resurface & althought I despair at them for doing it, I can understand why they are doing it.
They're sat idly at home, seeing HW's without half the ability they once had calling themselves champ & they think, 'I've got enough to whup those guys'!
Before we know, it's going to be like 1985 again, but with a bit more flab, less speed & greyer hair!!!
Just what is our sport doing to itself in this weeks Boxing News in the same " in brief " column we have 61 year old Saqul Mamby being allowed to fight a boxer half his age, ok so Osbourne's record is pretty poor but it only takes one lucky punch to turn what was a farce any way into a disaster. then two storys below that we have a 45 year old mother being given a licence to box. now we have Witherspoon coming back at 50years old .The abolitionists can just sit back & let us kill the sport I love without saying a word.if the so called administrators wont handle our sport more professionally it leaves the door wide open for government control & we dont need that

Its mad to think a guy who fought a split decision with the great Larry Holmes in 1983 can be contemplating fighting 25 years later. If he's got a bit of fire in his belly and as long as he doesn't get seriously hurt doing 6 rounders then it should be his own choice.
On that subject the one I genuinly worry about is Holyfield - I really wish he would retire because there is one thing to be old but entirely another to be old before your time through having 'wars'. Old Evanders taken some beatings in the last few years and I seriously wish his friends would tell him to knock it on the head (no pun intended)....
Going on from the earlier thread I agree that there is no comparing TW to George Foreman - George was/is just an animal!!!
Ps his burgers are f***in amazing - try them!!!!
