I'd say Jones by mid round knock out.
Roy certainly wouldn't want to get hit on the chin by Floyd, and Patterson had very fast hands too, but I think Jones would have too much of everything: speed, power, excellent chin and just about every shot in the book.
If Roy hits hard enough to stun the big ( but ordinary ) John Ruiz, I think a fast left hook or right hand would eventualy put the fragile chinned Patterson in trouble.

I highly doubt that. Floyd, for all the times he went down was only ever stopped by Johanssen, Liston and Ali twice (late, in the first, swollen shut eye in the second). Jones is not a murderous puncher
I think Jones could beat him but almost certainly not by ko.
Jones is faster but Patterson was very quick too, and aggressive, he'd be putting pressure on Jones all night long.
Also he was adept at slipping punches and had serious power.
I can see Jones running away all night to a points win or Patterson winning by ko.
It's 50/50 imo.

Well I reckon the reason Floyd wasn't knocked out more was because he was so carefuly protected. He was flattened in one of his last amateur bouts, as a middleweight. That was all Cus needed to see, to know he had to match the guy very carefuly.

When Jones sets himself he's a terrific puncher, only guy to knock down Toney for instance. Hard enough puncher to spark Floyd I'd say...

Well that is true about careful match making, but the same applies to Jones I would say
Reggie Johnson also knocked Toney down btw.
Jones can hit but we are talking about guys in different weight classes, Patterson wasn't big but he was still fighting bigger guys and I'm sure a lot of the names on Floyd's record hit him harder than Jones could.
I just don't think he'd ko him, it's not impossible of course, just not how I imagine the bout.
Interesting matchup :)

Whichever of the two lands the picture-perfect left-hook first. ;)

I wouldn't pay to see such a mismatch. Jones by KO whenever he feels like it. Simply outclasses Floyd in all departments.

I think that claim ruins the rest of your opinion.

I think not - Patterson had very fast hands for a heavyweight, but with Jones we're talking about a guy whose handspeed is probably as good as any middleweight in history. Of course he's probably not quite as fast with a few extra pounds (and years) on him, but no one at light-heavy is even close.

It'd still be a fight I'd love to see, though, because the matchup of speed and styles would be much better than (say) Jones/Ruiz was. ;)
