Felix Sturm - is he any good?

Hi guys - obviously to be a two time WBA world champ he must not be too shabby but how good is he?

Did anyone catch the fight against Randy Griffin.

A young Aussie Jamie Pittman faces him for the title next month and was just wondering what your thoughts on Felix Sturm were?

I like him though, I dont know why, because as terry says he has a stereotypical eastern european (well, German but you know what I mean) style, very technically sound, nothing flashy just a workmanlike basic boxing performance, working behind the jab, and if the opportunity comes it comes, if not lets go the 12.

Look for his training video on youtube, him and the fat geezer on the weights - very dolph lungren in rocky with the german trainer shouting "hhhaaaa.... hhhhaaaa" everytime felix is to do one excercise.

He definitely won that fight - though I don't think he's as good now as he once was. Has one of the best jabs in the division, though, and is usually pretty tight defensively.

You are probably right - but it depends how much of a star Pavlik can become.

Sturm did come to America to fight DLH after all.

You are probably right - but it depends how much of a star Pavlik can become.

I'd prefer Abraham v Sturm first, just to see how good Poppa Smurf really is.

Well, that would be the WBA and IBF titles potentially tied up then. Abraham also likes sticking to Germany.

I have seen a lot Sturm fights and he is a classy little boxer when he gets going, with a good jab and basics. The trouble is he lacks of a bit of physical strength on the inside and this showed in the first Castillejo fight but he had made adjustments by the second fight. I think he tried to trade in the first fight after the fans booed his last round runabout versus Maselino Masoe in the previous contest.

The logical next fight would be a unification with Abraham but with the two being on rival networks it seems unlikely. Sturm is seriously treading water against nondescript opposition like Gavin Topp, Noe Tulio Gonzalez and Randy Griffin and needs a challenge badly.

I was speaking to his next opponent's (Jamie Pittman) manager Sheldon Kidd recently and hopefully will get a few words from Jamie soon, as he limbers up for the big fight next month.

And for the record...i thought Sturm was unlucky against DLH. He switches southpaw quite effectively but generally doesn't throw enough punches when in close and let's his opponents lead off first. Basically he likes to move and box.
