EVERTON PARK RESULTS FROM 16TH MARCH 2008
Mark Moran – Again looked a class act in winning every round and now moves onto an English Title fight against Danny Wallace on the 28th March.
Carl Dilks – A good effort by Dilcs pushing forward at every opportunity, but never really looking like stopping the durable Walker .Carl sank in a left hook to the body in the 6th which took the wind from the sails , but Dean managed to hang in there.
Martin Murray - Another solid if not spectacular performance by Murray who forced the fight for every minute , but his eagerness for a KO smothered a lot of his work and the Polish guy - who took some good shots - was never in any real danger of folding .
Paul Kier – Looked composed on his pro debut and gave warhorse Paul Bonson plenty to think about.
Brett Flourney , John Watson and Joe Mc Nally - All boxed as home time guests on the VIP show and put in winning performances.
COLNE 30TH MARCH – Chris Johnson has pulled out with a perforated ear drum and a replacement will be announced shortly to join the VIP fighters Jack Arnfield , Stuart McFadgen , Shaun Horsfeild and Tommy McDonough on the bill which will be confirmed very soon.
G GARNELL 26TH April – Debutants Mike Robinson , Temao Dwyer and Alistair Morrison will join local favourites Mark Thompson , Brian Rose , Alex Matvienko, Jon Kays and new VIP signing Tony Quigley on this event ,tickets available at http://www.vipbe.co.uk

Not even a mention of the opponents NAMES?
This is what frustrates me about VIP- it seems to be that they market their shows as "hometown hero V "opponent". " The sole purpose of these shows being that people can come and cheer on a mate to a win.
As I don't know any of these boxers personally, I have little interest.
What I would like to see are some competative match ups!

Read the post again, pal - the opponents names are there. If you want me to highlight them just for you - just let me know.
You mention the sole purpose of these shows is to cheer on a mate to win - what wrong with that??? Is that not the idea?
I think you will also find that as far as competative matchups go VIP are probably the best around for it.
One last point - you mention that as you don;t know the fighters you have little interest...... every heard the phrase "if you've not got anything interesting to say, then don;t say anything?" Sound advice that, pal....
I can see " Walker, later his first name Dean is mentioned " "Polish Guy " and "Paul Bonson "Stegsie wrote:

So out of 7 opponents, thats 2 names and a vauge description.
Well, no they are not. All 7 home fighters won. At the Blackpool show the sole "blip" was a draw.Stegsie wrote:

I take competative to mean that both fighters have roughly the same chance of winning.
Clearly opponents are picked beacuase they are "durable" or more directly, they are "beatable." They are not booked because they have a relaisitic chance of winning the fight.
Just look at the "opponents" records on boxrec. They are typically a long series of defeats.
I'd say that on any VIP show the home fighter has about a 95% chance of winning. VIP shows could be much improved by giving fighters better matched opponents.
Although, it seems most promotions, dinners shows etc follow this format.
But I WOULD be interested if the match ups were a bit more interesting. One last point - you mention that as you don;t know the fighters you have little interest...... every heard the phrase "if you've not got anything interesting to say, then don;t say anything?"

Terry D wrote:Yeah, I'm not keen. It reminds me of 'Shameless' and I fooking hate that programme.bridportboxer wrote:Anyone seen the trailer for the Michael Gomez movie?
They took it to Cannes to get publicity/funding, however turning up after the festival had finished seriously dented this aim
It does look a bit like that. Would, I'm sure, be a fairly interesting story though. Would prefer a David Haye movie in a couple of years though
Yep, VIP lads are probably matched harder than most other stables. Thompson Vuma & the French guy that'd just lost a MD to the German Klose, Gomez Johanneson, Foster Jnr Arthur, Ali Nuumbembe Ajose Olusugen & Kevin Anderson (both "away") and Jamie Moore couldnt be accused of taking the easy route. Once these lads have been through their boxing apprenticeship they'll be matched just as tough as the aforementioned.sweetscience wrote:the majority of VIP lads have had under 10 bouts
the ones who have had more have been matched harder, Thompson, Moore, Foster
Yeah, but even so, if you look at the quality of the opponents, their records really are very weak indeed.sweetscience wrote:the majority of VIP lads have had under 10 bouts
I don't object to "learning fights" or as Wales terms it "boxing apprenticeships" if the promotor feels thats for the good of his boxer. But for an ENTIRE SHOW to feature such bouts? Thats not appealing.
For sure, VIP arn't the only ones who do this.
Without headliners available for the shows (i.e the off TV shows) what do you expect from a grounp of young developing boxers. Also, fights such as Matvienko Marshall were absolute barnstormers on the small hall shows. Its difficult to find a balance, but judge on how the lads get on when they get over 12-15 fights, no prospects fight 50-50 fights until over 10 fights at least.
Well, ok, but some of these fights are more like 95-5 fights! What I'm saying is that the oppponents were very weak indeed- just look at their records.Wales wrote: no prospects fight 50-50 fights until over 10 fights at least.
The problem is that fighters being constantly fed losing journeymen will quickly gain 10-0 records, that in fact make them look a lot better than they perhaps are.
............although the do give a good indication.matko wrote:Records dont indicate how good or bad an opponent is ...
But yeah, I do see what you mean. Some fighters do give a good scrap, despite being on a long losing streak.
But at the end of the day, in all honesty, its very very unlikley that they would win.
Cant remember the name of the lad, but the one that fought bri rose in the leisure centre in manchester. Think bri won by a round but he wa spuched all the way and some thought he lost. The other kids record was average and bri is a former ABA champ (no?).
So, Whicker, what promoter form anywhere in the world puts his prospects / young fighters in with guys who have a winning record?

You only have to watch Thompson v Vuma to realise VIP/Wood does his best to match his lads strong. Yuo could even say he could have given soem of them easier opposition.whicker wrote:............although the do give a good indication.matko wrote:Records dont indicate how good or bad an opponent is ...

Matvienko has had some tough battles (Marshall x2 - was a good boxer), Moran has been in a couple of fights with solid opposition of late and Nuumbembe v Watson was a dangerous fight to take and ultimately led to Ali losing his Commonwealth title.
Thompson v Harroche Horta is another example, and, of course, who can forget Catweazle v Arnfield
Very few, I think it is fair to say. But to swing this back to my original point- its unusual for an entire show to contain such bouts. Dinner shows are increasingly going that way, though.Wales wrote: So, Whicker, what promoter form anywhere in the world puts his prospects / young fighters in with guys who have a winning record?
What was a bit frustrating was the way that the opponent is apparantly of so little significance that most of them weren't even named in the report.
But true- this isn't just a VIP thing. A lot of fans will go and see Hatton or Khan simply because they are Hatton or Khan, without knowing or caring who they are facing.
danny harding vs chris pacy another vip match up he was also matched with is it lee cook?? the fight wit rose is lee noble who is better than his record suggests, kier vs bonson on sat show bonson was coming off a win with a heavyweight kier is only a cruiser. The shows are not tht bad i think very good and very entertaining

Whicker ,
Must admit that it was not one of our better cards and that was a disapointment as the first time in Liverpool . Yes we do match our kids to win but we want them in a fight at the same time.It is not always that easy and last week the opponents we wanted were not available and yes we ended up with more holding type journeymen than normal.
It ran smooth and on time ,fights not upto are usual standard but it was not a bad show compared to others . I just hope the liverpool lot come back next time as it will be better as our shows normally are,as stated above we have no problems letting our kids of the leash when we feel right .
Cheers,
STEVE WOOD

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I'll be straight up- what would draw me to a VIP show would be some keen match-ups. A couple of unbeaten prospects squaring off, a few matches with a local derby feel (Manchester V Liverpool, Lancashire V Yorkshire, England V Scotland etc) would be interesting, and good to watch too.
I'm sure too that this is financially beneficial, as the opponent may well bring a good number of fans with them, boosting the crowd.
I guess what I'm saying is that I have no objection to Prospect v Journeyman fights, but its good to spice up a card with some keen, 50-50 contests too.
Again, thanks for the reply- I'm a Lancatrian, I'll do my best to check out the bill from Colne.
