Chucho Castillo
This photo was taken in 1968 at "The Alexandria Hotel", located on the corner of 5th & Spring Sts. in downtown L.A. I recall the shot, and how it was used for publicity for George Parnassus' first boxing promotion at what was then known as, Jack Kent Cooke's "Fabulous Forum".
In the main event Castillo would decision Jesus Pimentel in twelve rounder. During the next few years, Parnanssus would match Castillo with Lionel Rose (for the bantam title in a bout that ended in a riot). Castillo was a favorite of Parnassus who would also match him with Scotland's Evan Armstrong, Ruben Olivares, Rafael Herrera, Enrique Pinder and Bobby Chacon, to name a few.
The Alexandria was very special to Parnassus, who had worked there as a boy, washing dishes when he first arrived in L.A. from Greece in 1909. The Hotel's ballroom would serve a s a gym for the boxers he'd feature on his Forum cards, that is, until 1970, when The Alexandria went thru renovations, and the boxing promoter's office switched to the "Elk's Club" building, across from MacArthur Park.
Hey Frank, remember in 1968, you held the Jr. Golden Gloves semi-finals at the Alexandria. I'm searching for the program of that night's events, I have it here somewhere.
