Here's something interesting. I was just looking at Cervantes's record. I noticed he was stopped by a very good fighter from Venezuela by the name of Cruz Marcano. At one time it was thought that Marcano might retire undefeated. I looked at Marcano's record and was surprised at what I discovered. Marcano lost one fight. He lost to a Mexican fighter by the name of Memo Morales in Venezuela! Morales finished his career with 3 wins and 11 losses. I saw Morales get destroyed by Antonio Gomez in Tijuana in 3 rounds .I didn't know it at the time,but this was right after Morales's fight with Marcano. At the time I saw the fight ,I didn't even know Morales had fought Marcano. Makes you think twice about the expression"bum of the month."

I dont know, Garza being an underachiever, you cant really hold the Rosairo loss against him, Rosario was a hell of a fighter. For me the ultimate underachiever has to be Hector Comatcho... he could have been the Leonard of the late 80s imo had he had his head screwed on right.
Lopez was always exciting but was a little underrated skills wise I think, i would have liked to have seen him fight Vinnie Pazienza at lightweight, that would have been a hell of a fight....

Does anyone on this thread have fights of these guys from the 70s and 60s that theyed be interested in selling to me?..... people like Medel, Crawford, Zamora, Bolanos, .....if anyone is interested or can give me info on where I can find such fights please pm me!....

I don't know why I hadn't brought this guy up,but I saw him fight the most times in TJ. Jorge Vaca. He fought 'em all. Saw him lose a close one to Terry Norris in Tijuana. Jorge didn't have the greatest skills,but gave it everything he had. Him and his brother Felipe were very popular in TJ. Was glad to see Vaca get a part of the Welter Title for a while. Ko'd Breland in a big upset. Also Ko'd Cuevas after Hearns and Duran bursted his bubble.

I saw Jorge beat Honeyghan for the title, bit of a controversial ending with the cut, but Vaca was a tough guy and gave a off form Honeyghan tons of trouble that night...

That was one thing that a lot of fighters did when they faced Vaca,perhaps underestimate him and not prepare hard enough. I think Lloyd wasn't in his best shape the first time they fought. He certainly was the second time though.

Another fighter I saw many times in Tijuana, who fought a lttle like Vaca, was Lupe Aquino. Both Vaca and Aquino were very strong. These two guys would not fold. It was a case of conditioning yourself or pay the price.

Randy Shields . . .

In 1992, former boxer Randy Shields, today a body guard/chauffer for major contractor Richard Tutor (Tudor-Saliba Construction, Goossen-Tudir promotions), was sittting having breakfast at his favorite Studio City restaurant, the "4 'n 20 Pie Shop", writing a crime novel.

Suddenly, two men break in, and start shooting the place up in an attempted robbery. Shields was slightly wounded, and crawled behind a table to take cover. Randy is licensed to carry a fire arm, and from behind the table opened fire on the startled bandits, who fled down Laurel Canyon Blvd.

Shields was very upset over the interuption, rude behavior and inconvenience of the matter. He followed the fleeing gunmen outside and opened fire, wounding both, one he shot right in the ass. Afterwards, Shields returned to his breakfast & paperwork, while the police apprehended the trouble makers.

All I can say to the bandits is, you're lucky Shields' father Sonny wasn't around. Instead of a ride to jail, they's have been transported to the morgue.

More on Randy & Sonny Shields . . .

One day, Jeanne Shields, mother of Randy Shields, and wife to Sonny, received a phone call from an "admirer". It seems the man had some how taken a fancy to Mrs. Shields, and somehow aquired her phone number. After several disturbing calls, Jeanne Shields convinced the man to meet her one afternoon. She told him she's be wearing a red sweater and would be standing on the sidewalk in front of a pharmacy in the middle of Lankershim Blvd. at 5pm.

The nervous admirer slowly pulled thru the traffic to meet his love interest, and pulled to the curb when he spotted her. Before the man could get out of the car, Randy came running up from behind, and Sonny ran in from the front, trapping the man in his front seat. The two quickly served him up an ass-whipping, and solved the problem for good.

Sometimes it's best not to bother the police with little problems that can quickly & easily be resolved.

Hey Frank, remember in 1968, you held the Jr. Golden Gloves semi-finals at the Alexandria. I'm searching for the program of that night's events, I have it here somewhere.

Rick did you ever go to Dr. Schwart office? I'm sure you did. remember how clutter his desk was, how he ever found his files is beyond me, I used to take fighters to him for their boxing lic. exam, and he would tell me " take'em in that room and give them the eye exam", when we walk back out of the room he would ask me "did they pass?" I of course would say "yes"

He would be in his office at 4AM, he would be gone by 11AM

One day I ask him, "why?" he said that he works while the crooks in the 'hood are still asleep, when they get up "I'm gone".

I ain't kiddin'. One time one of them sisters gets married and me and the wife are invited. It's in this big "salon" in TJ and the place is packed with people. A big spread of "birria",carne asada,and brandy,tequila,beer. Waiters balancing trays of food and drinks trying to avoid colliding with everyone . Mariachis,norteno bands. Kids runnin' around.Gifts piled high on a table. One of those air mattress machines that you turn on and the kids go running and jumping inside. Big dance floor with people dancing mambos and cumbias. It's loud and strobe lights are swirling around. I'm sitting there trying to catch my breath and sweating from dancing and drinking when my eyes look over at the front door. Standing there is a little old guy about 5 foot maybe. He's in a tattered suit and has on this bent up fedora .Has three days growth on his face and he's swaying back and forth. Looks like this guy's been out all night and the night before that. Well I think the rent a cops are not going to let him in. Wrong. Everything stops and all eyes are on the door looking at this old guy.The bride , who looks like one of those girls you see in them "novelas",goes running up to him and throws her arms around him and cries"Papi". It's her father! He walks her out to the middle of the dance floor like he's the "cock of the walk". They're dancing this waltz and he's leading her around like Fred Astaire. She's a head taller than him. Everybody's going crazy and screaming. I'm thinking,"This must be what they're talking about when they say it's a man's world."
