Gary Mason Vs Skelton, Francis, Harrison, Sprott & Willi

I've posted this here as I though I would get more responce than in the Boxers of the Past Forum.

After watching last nights Skelton V Francis fight I got thinking how would Gary Mason have faired against the Current crop of British Heavywights of Skelton, Francis, Sprott, Harrison, Williams, Hide and McDermott.

I always though that Mason was a little underated mostly due to being in the huge shadow of Frank Bruno. Mason had a respectable punch, very good chin (never floored as far as I know) and only lose was to a certaiin Lennox Lewis. He was also a big strong Heavyweigh but was very slow at times.

I think he would stand a good chance of beating on his day, many of the aboved named fighter.

Hide had the talent and speed to outbox Mason but if he stood and traded I see Mason knocking out the Norwich fighter.

The Mason who fought Lewis would maybe be too much for McDermott and Skelton at this stage of their careers.

Mason against Williams is tough to call but Danny's inconsistancy leads me to go for a Mason win.

Mason against Harrison I find a hard one to call (did Mason ever fight a southpaw?). If Harrison turns out to be as good as I think he is I'll go for a points win for Harrison.

As for Mason against Sprott and Francis, these two are close ones, could go either way, but I again favour Gary Mason on points or late stoppage (not KO with Francis).

Mason could certainly punch, and his record speaks for itself, just the one loss to Lennox Lewis. He is better than the current crop of heavies, Hide apart, who would probably have proved too sharp for Mason.
Mason was managed by the shockingly cautious Duff and Lawless team, who took no chances with their man and steered him away from the really big tests until the Lewis trouncing. That was too tough a test in hindsight. It's a shame he wasn't able to come back from that due to his eye trouble. He definitely had the punch to make waves. It wasn't to be.

Mason was oh-so-slow. But still powerful.
I would fancy Danny Williams to have too much variety and speed, as would HIde. The rest would get walked down by plodding Gary.

His knock out of Tyrell Biggs still looks dubious to me though. Biggs just seem to crumble too easily.

Its quite a tough thing to judge, as Bennie noted Mason was brought along very slowly by his managment team, his KO record is very impressive but his opponents were limited. When Mason did step up he got outclassed by the Young Lewis. He then was forced into retirement.

I'm not saying Mason was overated or he wouldn't have beaten Williams et al. Its just, its hard to say cause Mason's oposition was similar to that of Harrison's.

I have the feeling he would have beaten Sprott by KO, he may have got outworked by the tough Long (as I think Long could have taken his power). I think he would have Knockout Francis and the Williams fight would have been tough to call.

I don't think we ever got to find out quite how good Mason was, my impression is that Mason was protected for a reason (his lack of speed) and he would have been beaten if he would have faught the likes of Carl Williams, Tony Tubbs, Bonecrusher Smith - etc.

God knows what Tyrell Biggs was doing that night, I definately think he underestimated Gary.

i think a few of u r being a bit harsh on mason i reckon he'd walk thru the likes of williams, hide, sprott and skelton.

mason give lennox a decent fight until his eye damag caught up with him, he dragged lewis into a fight and slightly hurt him a few times.

i reckon mason would have been too powerful for this lot we have at the moment harrison included.

Gary Mason- not only was he powerful, but he was mentally stern & tough, game, and very very competitive.

These types of qualities would be way too much for Danny Willaims and Herbie Hide. Hide would outbox him for a while, but isn't tough enough to do it all night.

Too early to tell on Audley, but if he is as good as we hope then i see a similar fight to the Lewis fight.

Maybe McDermott and Skelton will improve (i doubt it), but Mason trounces them pretty easily.

As for guys like Sprott, Francis etc, geez, these guys are journeymen. Mason whacks them out.

Nobody in the British scene could mix in with lennox Lewis like Gary did, or take so many of those meaty right hands.

mason batters the domestic heavy's we've got at the moment.

I reckon Gary trounces the lot of em, apart from Aud and Williams.
He had a decent chin and a heavy punch if nothing else.
Audley might keep him at range and win late or points - assuming he's as good as he says he is 8)

Danny has a decent enough chin - those punches Sam repeatedly crashed onto his head would've put most fighters in trouble - and I think he's good enough ( on his night ) to beat Mason.
