Mayweather would beat Cotto easier than he beat Hatton.

Cotto is not as fast as Hatton, he does not throw as many punche. He is stronger and probably punches harder. He may also have a better chin, but I don't think there's much in that.

Mayweather would box his head off from start to finish. I don't think he would stop him.

to make him a STRONG favourite means you've either never seen FM fight or are on drugs?

The Mayorga fight will be an excellent profile builder though. It is bound to make for good press conferences.

Unfortunately for Cotto, the division is a bit dull right now. Aside from Mayweather, who else is there to fight?

What about Berto?

The others are constantly being recycled, but he's a top prospect.

Think Mayorga can't shed the weight so the fight is off. Cotto is fighting Gomez next and probably the Cintron-Margarito winner after that

Cotto has loads of fights - Mosley rematch (mosley won that fight)Margarito, Cintron, Witter, Hatton, Williams, Berto and eventually Mayweather or even Delahoya

Cotto is World Class and should have little trouble blowing Gomez away...

If I was asked though 'would he beat Maywether' i'd have to say no... I feel Cotto's good but not that good.

good stuff david, i was ringside in vegas (did i ever tell you that i have met boxing personalities !!) when he fought randall bailey, trust me, bailey came to win that night and bailey can bang, cotto was very very weight drained but he held some monstrous shots off bailey before stopping him, it was that moment that i knew miguel cotto was going places.

Loads of people had Mosley beating Cotto. Mosley landed the flusher bigger shots, he built up a lead in the early rounds and won some late rounds big, ie when he had Cotto nearly out in the 10th was it?

I think Cotto is one of those fighters who does everything very well, but nothing brilliantly. Most elite class fighters have at least one attribute that is exceptional, but Cotto doesn't really. He just enough things very well to make him competitive at the top level.

I actually think Gomez has a reasonable chance as an outsider, too. He could get steamrollered of course, but my guy feeling is that he'll give Cotto one or two problems.

To answer the question in the title of this thread - since Cotto stepped up to Welterweight for me he is the most improved fighter on the world scene - and I do not write that lightly - Cotto had murders making Light Welter!!! - remember myself and Rhino getting him to sign a glove on the undercard of the Klitschko/Williams fight - prior to the weigh in he look nothing more than a bloody skeleton!!!

Yes, Cotto has beaten decent men, but, and there's no getting around this, Ricky Hatton has beaten better men.
Mosley beats EVERYONE Hatton has fought.

And so does JUDAH ( apart from KT! in his prime!).

I have 1 reservation about Cotto. Not that he's easy to hit. Anyone who presses a fight is going to take some. But that he was knackered at the end of his very entertaining fight with Mosley. He showed skills turning boxer over the last 3. But if he was going to be a great fighter, wouldn't he have had more at the end?

it was a top level win alright, and maybe Mosley's mid fight clinching prevented Cotto from breaking Shane down. But I have a slight question mark about Cotto.

I hope to find out more about Cotto if he ever faces Margarito. That's one guy who will test him physically.

Cotto-Berto in a few years...that will be a good one (when Andre is ready).

Red Medicine wrote:So what if Cotto was on the backfoot in round 12? I had to score that round even, as both fighters landed 12 shots each, and neither dominated it. He did for one round what Mayweather does for the whole duration of his fights. I've never heard people criticize Mayweather for being reluctant to engage.
yeah but the point is that Cotto specialises in breaking ppl down. By the end he looked as tired as the 35 or so yo Mosley. ok he proved his boxing skills but a little moe life down the stretch please.

he did get a cut somewhere in the middle of the 12th rd which may explain the quiet finish.

I actually think with Mosley having been a title holder at 154, and Shane hugging Cotto in the mid stages, may have had something to do with it. This stopped Cotto from wearing Mosley down & Cotto may have felt his strength inside as well.

It was a very good fight but it just seemed to fizzle a bit by the end.

Cotto may have shown vulnerabilities in the past but he's always found a way to win and he can hardly be accused of having a padded record either.

The real shame is that he needs Floyd Mayweather to answer the topics question conclusively - a question that I reckon will forever go unanswered, despite Cotto's willingness.

that's true. But I could make do with fights against Margarito and when ready Andre Berto.
