yea thats what im saying.. its a lot less stressful knowing we dont need to have him win the next tournament because he is streaky at times. Also if Hunter loses today, he will be joining Estrada, so he wont be the only one if Downs losesboxmel wrote:In either scenario he would be going to the Olympics; having him win in T&T takes the pressure off, that's for sure. Now we just have to hope that Molina and Downs Bronze today - leaving Estrada the lone U.S. boxer in Guatamala.Deontay qualifing here i felt was needed, rather than to have him win the next one.
1st Americas Olympic Qualifier - 12-18 March
Exactly - but they are only giving U.S. results. AIBA isn't doing real time at the qualifiers - just posting after the session has ended. Sadam Ali lost to Yordanis Hernandez 13-5 today - that really isn't too bad.Downs lost 10-3, check usaboxing.org for quicker results
Ooops - Heavyweight Deontay Wilder (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) super heavyweight Michael Hunter (Las Vegas, Nev.) both dropped their championship bouts, losing to Cuba’s Osmai Acosta Duarte and Robert Alfonso Acea respectively. Hunter will join Estrada and Downs in Guatemala. Wilder lost 12-1 and Hunter lost 9-1.
I would say having 8 of the 11 USA boxers qualified at this point is fairly respectable. I know some thought we might only send 5 or 6 to the Olympics. I was always hopeful that we would send a full team or close to it. In '04 we had less than a full team at 9 boxers so it wouldn't be something new if it happened again. I think we will get at least 1 more qualified and hopefully 2 or all 3.
Interestingly, Downs might be the most at risk at qualifying, because he might draw the Cuban early in Guatemala and have the result reversed.
Estrada seems fortunate that there aren't too many guys left at his weight to knock him out, be he seems to be the least competitive member of the US team. Hunter's biggest threat to qualification could be Payares, and the Mexican Ruiz did okay against Alfonso. It would be a real shame if he didn't make it.

I think Hunter should qualify no problem. It seems only the "elite" guys beat or at least thats the case recently losing to Timirziev and Alfonso. He should have no problem against the Mexican, he beat him 21-1 at the worlds.
As for Estrada I have no idea, hes the only member of the team I havent seen fight and im not sure who else is in his weight class.
