A very brief summing of the show is as follows -

The Team were happy with the performances of the lads - particularly pleased with Gavin Smith who was having his first fight back after a reasoanbly long lay off - Gavin himself admitted he was a tadge nervous going into the fight but stated as the fight went on he relaxed a lot more and now just wants to fight regularly and to prove to everyone he will have a say at British level - states he can comfortably get down to Welterweight.

Spoke to Femi Fehintola after his fight with John Baguley - "You can only beat who is put in front of you, I thought I boxed to instructions and lets face it, it was a good fight to have prior to me hopefully boxing Stephen Foster - now thats a fight I really want".

For those who don't know Purse bids are due in the first couple of weeks in April for a proposed fight between Foster and Fehintola for Femi's English Title and it will also be used as a Final eliminator for the British Title. I asked Femi why he wanted that fight so much - "Stephen is a good fighter and is rated above me in the rankings and I want to prove to my team, myself and everyone in boxing I have what it takes to do the business on the domestic scene. Steve's style is perfect for me but I am not sure he or his team will want anything to do with me, they will consider it a step down and I will hopefully be in the opposite corner to prove them wrong".

If there was a surprise it was in the Giovanni Frontin v Nick Smedley fight - in the 4th round Smedley was hit with a swinging right hand which would have put him on his backside if it were not for the ropes - Smedley took an eight count and to his credit came back well and took the Referee's decision after a hard 6 round battle - On speaking to Nicky's father he states "we want Nicky to be really tested now, this fight will have been a big wake up call for Nicky, he knows he was loading up too much, and to be honest whilst he won the fight it was not one of Nicky's better nights. I would love to see Nicky in with Scott Lawton or someone like Lee Meager - Nicky will have no choice but to be at his best for a fight like that".

Jon Ibbotsen was very pleased with his performance Ayitey Powers - he stresses to anyone who will listen to him that he is absolutely determined to win a British Title and will prove any doubters that he has what it takes. He wants to box regularly and will fight and beat whoever Dennis Hobson and Richard Poxon put in front of him.

Thats what I thought, too. It had the look of one of those "Greens V Reds" shows, where strong fighters with winning (green) records are given bouts against fighter generally with losing (red) or very mixed records. Three of the opponents had only ever won a single fight each!

Sure the bouts can be tough scraps, but at the end of the day its pretty obvious who will win, as it turns out to be the case 95% of the time.

Rhino - regards to your tickets sales point - I think you have a point to a degree - me, you and many others on this forum maybe fussy concerning a bill and the undercard - if we think it is not good enough we voice our opinions on here - so I have to be honest to say if it were a bigger bill then okay I agree with you.

However - how many times has it been stated on here and anywhere else - when a boxer finds out he is on a bill - he may get a percentage of the ticket sales - so he will go the local pubs or wherever he sells his tickets - I do not mean to insult the average punter but they do not have a clue about boxing - all they want to do is see their mate box - in turn they may drag along a few of their mates etc etc - it doesn't matter about the opponent to a lot of people.

Another maddening thing I have personally seen is a top fight being on a show - but the fans being stuck in the bar getting p*ssed - they will come out to see their man box and then f*ck off to the local bars and clubs - yet their is more fights to come on the bill - I remember in the early days Rhino where me and you would think it was great these people going because we would shift forward to the more expensive seats to watch the undercard!!! - I remember us going to Wales once - we were at the back on the side - a lot of the punters left after the Calzaghe fight (Veit fight) - we ended up sneaking right up to the ringside seats!!!

Its madness these punters pay good money to show their face at a show - they invariably only see one fight!!!

it did help that i was smooth talking to the woman at the cardiff arena who was in charge !! ...

but i take your point about the tickets and the opponents. now i know that its not just FA that have this strategy and not only FA who have been guilty, but i thought 2 days before the fights i might have seen what the scraps were.

Rhino - you ask a lot of fans even at the boxing some simple boxing questions and the majority of them will not have a clue - not a bloody clue.

All the majority are concerned about is seeing their man box and WIN - they do not give a toss who is in the opposite corner!!!

The big ticket sales for major events comes down to the promoter and his skills with the media and how much money he and the TV company are prepared to pump into selling the event.

Get the local rags on side for the ticket sales and get the TV company and the nationals to hype up the fight to increase the TV audience to keep the TV executives happy and thus prolong the promotional contract.

Yeah, thats a good point. It appears that the main income from shows like this is personal freinds of the fighters.

This is very unusual (perhaps even unique) for PROFESSIONAL sport.

I know in most amateur sports, boxing, running, football etc a lot of the crowd , often pretty much all the crowd, are mates, family etc of those taking party.

Its the same with eg amateur theatre.

But nearly all professional sport relies on wider appeal than just the atheltes circle of friends.

Surely by having some keener, evenly mathced and more competative bouts on the cards they could increase ticket sales by appealing to the wider sportsfans AS WELL as mates.

Hate to be picky but you are incorrect - the rope saved him going on his arse - the ref still gave him a standing 8 count or are you telling me you know more than the trainer and a world champion?
