Post by zojo »

90's guy who beat Tony Tubbs and lost to Foreman and Briggs

70's guy who beat George Chuvalo, Patterson and Quarry. But lost to Ali, Frazier, and Rubin "Hurrican" Carter.

Both beat a pair of Quarrys (90's beat Bobby and 70's beat Jerry)

One was a world class fighter, the other a clubfighter.

I always wondered if George Foreman elected to fight this guy for the ambiguity of it all. Confusing folks who read the record as an inside joke. I think the 90's Ellis loss to Foreman is the highlight of his career.

...Ok maybe the win over Tubbs is actually the highlight....

I remember watching Roy Firestone on ESPN asking some boxing journalist about this fight. Roy actually thought that George was fighting the origional Jimmy Ellis from the '70s.

That is pretty funny. He clearly didn't do his homework that time. Actually Roy Firestone was a decent journalist; whatever happened to him anyway?

I've got this fight. It's pretty entertaining, actually. Foreman has Ellis on queer street by the second round, but is just so lazy about it all. He refuses to finish him off, & Richard Steele was at his incompetent best

Wasn't the '90s version managed by Howie Long?
