You are taking the piss with £40 for unreserved seats at the Villa Leisure centre Hennessey Sports.

Not impressed one bit - its a guaranteed sell out because this is a red hot local derby between two lads with good sized followings.

That said, its being milked for all its worth with the ticket pricing.

The undercard had better be something special for £40 a pop

Well Terry if you are after value for money Pugilist promotions have got a show on at the Tower Ballroom on the 13 of april theres 7 pro bouts and 13 amatuer for 25 quid.So 20 fights on a sunday afternoon and we are keeping the place open afterwards if you want to carry on drinking

Glad to see boxing is making a comeback there - I had some good times watching the likes of Shaun Cogan, Malcolm Melvin, Justin Clements, John Foreman, Spencer McCraken etc on value for money shows there in years gone by.

I am thinking along the same lines myself Tom - a late stoppage for McDermott would be my prediction - did you get my email?

Despite Hennessey trying to turn everyone's pockets inside out with their predatory pricing scheme I cant miss this one: its a huge fight for the West Mids.

I will keep an eye out for you there Tom.

I hope Hennessey are spending a few quid on security for the night - passions could run high with both Elcock and McDermott bringing sizeable followings to a relatively small venue. Hope I am wrong.

I did, yes. I did e-mail you back, though not sure if you got it as my e-mail account has been playing me up something rotten of the last couple of months.

A couple of Errol’s lads are on the undercard – I know Martin Gethin is – and I’m looking forward to seeing Kooner in the flesh again. I was there when he knocked out Gavin Reid at the York Hall the other month and seems an exciting little fighter.

It’s a tough one to call, been changing my opinion every day. The more I think about it, however, the more I think that McDermott will do it. It promises to be a cracking atmosphere and, truth be told, I wish I was in the crowd!

Wayne Elcock defends his British middleweight title against mandatory challenger Darren McDermott in the biggest all-Midlands showdown for years in Birmingham on April 25.
Local man Elcock, from Shard End in the city, won the title with a shock decision over former two-time world title challenger Howard Eastman in Coventry last September. Victory secured him a shot at Arthur Abraham's IBF middleweight belt in Switzerland in December but he was thumped in five. It doesn't make him a bad fighter. Abraham, big-hitting and unbeaten, was making the sixth defence of his 'proper' world belt. Elcock may even have gained from the experience.
The Brummie looks 'old' on paper at 34 but has been avoided and toed the line only 21 times in nine years as a pro. He is thus well-preserved (think of Jim Watt) and showed what he could do against Eastman (who had never lost to a British opponent before) as he fought in clever spurts in a non-televised affair and frustrated the old Battersea Bomber. Fluid and sharp-hitting, Elcock first proved his worth when he dazzled the strong Anthony Farnell on the way to a landslide 12-round decision in the Lion's Den of Manchester back in 2003. Despite a quick setback to unheralded Scot Lawrence Murphy a fight later, Elcock continued to prove his ability (when he could get a fight) and lasted the full 12 rounds with the heavy-handed Scott Dann in a first crack at the British middleweight title in Plymouth in 2005 (the first British title fight to use three judges, incidentally). Dann, who picked up a Lonsdale Belt for life, had blown away all his previous challengers.
Elcock bounced back with an emphatic revenge stoppage of Murphy (who retired afterwards) and then won the English middleweight title with an eight-round dismissal of Steve Bendall to secure that second crack at the British title against Eastman. He wasn't to be denied again.
To McDermott, who parades a nice line in haircuts and looks a rapidly-improving fighter in excellent form. Unbeaten in 15 fights, the challenger first raised some eyebrows when he took less than a round to dispose of Warley journeyman Howard Clarke back in 2005. The tall Dudley man has done everything asked of him since by mentor Dean Powell, including seven stoppages in his last eight fights. His victims include Conroy McIntosh, Michael Monaghan and Andy Halder.
Darren does have one blemish on his resume: a four-round draw with London-based Turk Gokhan Kazaz in London in 2004 (Kazaz was a bit of a prospect at the time) but has the height and reach, the boxing ability, the snap in his shots and (particularly) the workrate to make life extremely difficult for a champion who likes to pick his punches and control the flow of a fight.
McDermott goes well to the body.
This one is fascinatingly poised. Elcock is the more experienced, the more naturally talented and probably the harder single puncher, but the younger, superfit McDermott is going to press and press hard with the lure of a Lonsdale Belt in his nostrils and his customary big support. Bragging rights, too, will count for a lot in this one.
It really could go either way.

Every time that McDermott has made a step up – Andy Halder, Darren Rhodes, etc – he has put in devastating performances. Darren has plenty of things on his side that will trouble Elcock: height, workrate, fitness and non-stop – some would say relentless – two-fisted aggression.

I know that some think that Elcock will be too strong for him, know too much after boxing the likes of Abraham, Eastman and Farnell – mixing at a better class. But Darren is taller and he switches attacks between head and body with ease. Elcock is going to have to take a lot of leather when he tries to come in attack.

Anyone who has ever seen Darren will know he is ridiculously fit. I have yet to seen him hurt – been in with big-hitting Conroy McIntosh, who has floored Darren Barker and Paul Smith – and I could see him outboxing Wayne on the outside: long jab followed by long, hard and accurate follow-up right.

However, his long, thin body could make him vulnerable if Elcock decides to go to work around there.

Mick Monaghan has boxed both (lost to both) and thinks that McDermott will win. Monaghan lost a close four-rounder to Elcock (I was at the York Hall and thought a timid Elcock was lucky), but lost every round and retired on his stool after nine against McDermott (Midland Area title fight in 2006). Mick added that McDermott hit harder, was stronger and his relentless attack broke his heart.

He said that McDermott is one of only three people to have legitimately beaten him.

Another common foe, Darren Rhodes, is tipping McDermott. Again, he thinks that McDermott is an all-round better fighter, and said that the body shots he took in their British title eliminator were some of the hardest blows he has absorbed in his career. Despite the fact he has twice lost to Elcock, one in the opening round, he said Elcock doesn’t hit as hard.

Conroy McIntosh said that McDermott is the best he has been in with, and Con has been in with the likes of Paul Smith, Darren Barker, Geard Ajetovic, etc.

I think that Elcock is a confidence fighter, something that will probably be pounded out of him in the first seven. Wayne will probably go into a bit of a shell after that and Darren will step up a gear in the tenth and get him out of there.

Can’t wait. Oh, and the winner will probably be involved in another all-Midlands fight, this time with Matty Macklin.

I will be cheering on fellow Brummie Elcock (who, incidentally, is a real nice fellar outside the ring) but cant help thinking that this is McDermott's time.

Macklin v the winner would be just great business for the City and unmissable in my eyes.

Its great to finally have fights of this magnitude back in the Second City

Excellent Previews, the anticipation is really building up.

Podmore_Birmingham is spot on when he says McDermott is ridiculously fit. I see him beat Halder and Monaghan and the fluid workrate was very impressive to witness.

That said, he's worked at hot pace in both fights which he has mastered. Elcock may have the experience to break up his rhythm and knock him off track.

Personally I'd prefer McDermott to win, because the fight at middleweight I'd most like to see is the two Darren's, Barker and McDermott, square off in a double title showdown.

McDermott has to show us all he can cut it at British title level having chewed up and spat out the the also-rans, but I go for Elcock to bring his experience into play and steal a decision or dare I say it, a late stoppage.

Another "can't wait" fight.

Could be a bit of a crossroads fight this one. Elcock may have peaked with the win over Eastman and McDermott is the hungry fighter on the rise. He will be looking for his breakthrough, similarly to how Elcock was when he fought Farnell all those moons ago. Good trade fight and great for boxing in my former Black Country residence

Although you are missing out on being at the venue for this barnstormer it seems to me you crossed the Irish sea at the right time Steve -

the pro scene over there has blown up and is just massive at the moment. Thanks almost single handidly to Brian Peters, it would seem.

Ha Ha wishful thinking indeed! With Dunne and Lee losing and Duddy being cut to ribbons and defensively exposed with each passing fight, i suspect the bubble may be about to burst. Hopefully McCloskey can stay upright tomorrow and salvage some pride.

You are right about Brian Peters though, he is churning out bills all over Ireland with surprising regularity and it is getting a lot of local fighters good workouts. Fair play to him.
