Matchmaking by the public
Matchmaking by the public
what do you think would be the effect of opening up a list of 5 opponents to public/internet polling, if the fighter promised to live with the decision reached. A good thing for boxing?

Madness!!!
First of all in reality - we have good knowledge on here as fans - but its as fans.
What about the promoter and his business and the money he has invested in the fighter?
Its not just about the fighter in a decent fight - its about the fighter trying to earn some dough so he can pay the bills and what happens to him after boxing!!!
Sometimes as boxing fans we can be highly selfish - to a degree I can see why - because we want to see good fights - we want to be entertained for our money.
But whether we like it or not - boxing is a job for the boxer - a business for the promoter - and a bonus if the fans can be entertained.

well thats why i said out of say 5 - not an open list, that would be stupid, but out of 5 acceptable to the promoter..... whats wrong with that?Spud wrote:Madness!!!

For the very reasons I have stated - your proposal is madness.MatthewS wrote:well thats why i said out of say 5 - not an open list, that would be stupid, but out of 5 acceptable to the promoter..... whats wrong with that?Spud wrote:Madness!!!

It's certainly radical, but not a bad idea, Spud.Spud wrote:For the very reasons I have stated - your proposal is madness.MatthewS wrote:well thats why i said out of say 5 - not an open list, that would be stupid, but out of 5 acceptable to the promoter..... whats wrong with that?Spud wrote:Madness!!!

However, there would need to be rules. You'd need to register to vote (one per address) and the names specified would have to be agreed by the promoter somehow.
which is what i said - the promoter gives a list of names, ergo he is happy with them. 3,4,5 names, each of which the promoter is happy with.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:It's certainly radical, but not a bad idea, Spud.Spud wrote:For the very reasons I have stated - your proposal is madness.MatthewS wrote: well thats why i said out of say 5 - not an open list, that would be stupid, but out of 5 acceptable to the promoter..... whats wrong with that?

I meant the other promoter(s).MatthewS wrote:which is what i said - the promoter gives a list of names, ergo he is happy with them. 3,4,5 names, each of which the promoter is happy with.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:It's certainly radical, but not a bad idea, Spud.Spud wrote: For the very reasons I have stated - your proposal is madness.

in advance? i dont think it would be automatically neccesary....Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:I meant the other promoter(s).MatthewS wrote:which is what i said - the promoter gives a list of names, ergo he is happy with them. 3,4,5 names, each of which the promoter is happy with.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote: It's certainly radical, but not a bad idea, Spud.

fighter #1 gets 66%, fighter 2 gets 20%, etc etc.... so the promoter then goes to the management of fighter #1 and tries to make the fight. When the shortlist gets drawn up, its not as if the other promoters will be in the dark on it..
look at the arrangements for Hatton, they publicly said there was a shortlist. all im saying is make that list public, and listen to what the results are.
its actually an interesting proposition, because ebsfleet fc are now run and selected by internet interest and polling.
i suppose a better idea would be for a good few hundred boxing fans, to invest and become a promoter in their own right, then they can make their own decisions via the net and associated polling, along the lines of ebsfleet fc.

Ricky Hatton would have retired years ago if they brought this ruling in, we'd have certainly seen Hatton-Witter by nowMatthewS wrote:what do you think would be the effect of opening up a list of 5 opponents to public/internet polling, if the fighter promised to live with the decision reached. I would hate to eat in your restaurant or buy goods in your store.
In a free market, one is paid for his services and the quality of the goods he produces.
Is it any wonder why boxing has become a minor sport?
It is good to see some of the former Ricky huggers waking up.
We all engaged in Hatton-opponent discussion years ago when this Forum started.

to invest and become a consumers organization in their own right.
Then they can make their own views known via the net with associated
polling and support the promoters who please them.
Let's face it, everybody in boxing is organized, but the fans.

But whether we like it or not - boxing is a job for the boxer - a business for the promoter - and a bonus if the fans can be entertained I understand fully all what you are saying but surely the last part has to be wrong. The promoter is selling a product, if its good ITV or Setanta will buy it. We as fans will go to the fight or buy the PPV if the product is good. I therefore think our entertainment is very important and boxers and promoters need to consider us far more than they do. FW sold ITV a load of crap and lost his exclusive contract so now we are getting better fights from him. We pay the promoters and the boxers so why shouldnt we have our say. I wouldnt suggest we become the matchmakers, that would be going too far but I do believe fighters and promoters should listen more to the fans. Hatton definately needs to listen, stop his bullshit and fight Witter or he wont be remembered as a great when he quits.Spud wrote:Madness!!!
