Thaxton - My time to shine

Jon Thaxton is promising “something special” in his European Lightweight Title challenge against Yuri Romanov at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday, April 4th.

The British Champion headlines the Hennessy Sports show in association with title partners GoldenPalace.com which will be shown live on Sky Sports, Sky Sports 1 9.30pm.

Thaxton, of Norwich, has total respect for his opponent from Belarus, who won three fights in Britain before losing on points to former British champion Graham Earl in 2006.

Romanov is ranked number three in the WBA rankings and Thaxton expects him to be better than when he faced Earl.

Thaxton said: “I just think there’s going to be something very special from me on April 4th. This is a world class fight and when I win it I will be right up there in the world rankings.

“I’ve followed his career and he had a lot of success over here a few years ago. Graham Earl had a fantastic night against Romanov, but Romanov had been out of the ring for a long time before that one.

“I will not be fighting the same Romanov Earl did. I’ve watched his recent fights and his win over Carlos Diaz Melero in 2006 for the European title. He got dropped but simply got up, wiped his gloves, smiled and then pole-axed Diaz.

"So this kid is dangerous and so strong. It’s a dangerous fight for me, but I’m having an Indian summer to my career that I can’t see ending just yet.

“The moment I take my eyes off the ball against Romanov is the moment I’m in trouble. I’ve worked hard in training and I really believe I can pull it off.

“This fight will tell me how far I can go, in terms of world titles, and I feel there’s something special to come from me in this fight.”

Thaxton's promoter Mick Hennessy said: "This is a great traditional fight where the British champion takes on the European champion between two boxers who are prepared to put it all on the line, risking it all. This could move Jon on to bigger things, push him up the world rankings and get him the world title shot he craves."

It's a very tough fight for JT, I hope he can pull this one off and get in the World title mix..... the proper way.

Romanov's a tough hard working bastard (as is JT), this should be a cracking fight. As JT says he's going to need something special in this one and I personally wouldn't be surprised to see him pull off the upset in this one.

Congrtulations Wellie Boot, you've finally managed to write a press release about Thaxton without mentioning Khan once. Well done. on Mondayweek you can try another challenge and justify the risk of putting Thaxton in with Romanov, with him getting beaten, rather than earn £150k for fighting Khan.

I bet he can't buy a 'Brand New Combine Harvester' with what he's getting for Romanov at York Hall. Ooh ahh ooh ahh.

You're entitled to look at it from the purely money side of things. But a lot of us here are just fans. Fans who appreciate Thaxton stepping up and fighting the European champion. If he loses, he still has the Lonsdale belt.

You bring up the £150k offer again. The Thaxton camp has another side of the story. If you want to discuss the issue in public, could one side not provide the puiblic with proof of the correct offer(s.)

Was Romanov offerred a fight with Khan?

Think its safe to take your head out of Fwanks arse eh?

We still remember him saying of Khan after his last fight "its either in America next or for the European title" and "if haye beats Enzo I`ll retire" .. all typical :D
Why not answer any of these questions before you start your usual trash?? :TU:

Yes, this is a sport remember, it's not all about money, and who makes the most.

You can gloat all you want BC, but Khan looks like a twat right now, not Thaxton. Khan was supposed to be giving it the large this year, but he's fighting a mug in his next fight, whislt Thaxton is challenging for the European Title.

Who cares if Thaxton is earning less? He's challenging for a proper title, rather than hanging around for a paper belt so he can call himself a 'world' champion.

Mick does tend to throw his guys Into the lions den when there clearly not good enough at times but gets away with because It's a genuine title like the EBU. But guys like Rees and Skelton didn't get respect for fighting for genuine belts until they lost for example.

If Ramonov Is as good as I hear then Thaxton will be stopped early or badly outclassed but good luck to him.
