Mathis vs Chuvalo

Post by Robinson »

I have just watched this fight...is there a back story ?

Mathis seemed really eager to get at Chuvalo...there seemed to be a genuine hatred.

Was this because of the warly fouling ?

I found it interesting to see Buster pick up the Ref to get at Chuvalo.

That occurred in the first round, if memory serves. Buster became enraged when Chuvalo hit him low two times in that round, if I recall correctly. Buster was even yelling at Chuvalo to "come on and fight." I think Mathis tried to slap Chuvalo at one point in that round. It really got out of hand.

Chuvalo also kneed Mathis in the groin in one of the later rounds if I recall.

I don't recall reading anything about any bad blood between them before the fight. I think Mathis was just p.o.ed to get hit in the cup twice from the get-go.

I haven't seen the fight in a long, long time.

But I remember it was probably Mathis' best performance as a pro. He really put a whipping on Chuvalo, and cut him up.

One newspaper report said Chuvalo was crying at the end of the fight. Hard to tell with all the blood.

It was a good win for Mathis, he for the most paty dominated Chuvalo. He seemed so angry at points and the fire kept burning.

Some how Chuvalo does not strike me as the guy to be crying, BUT anything can happen in there and pain-frustration hurts

Me either. But that's what one of the newspapers said. Surprised me when I read it.
