The link for this interview on fight hype.com was posted over on the general forum. Very revealing indeed, but can anyone verify if its genuine! Those are some pretty blunt questions being hurled at Floyd!

Here's a link to a feature on Cotto that was put up on Second's Out today:

Interesting reading, but i find this quote from the author a little bemusing:
I am convinced that Mayweather is dodging Cotto, and not because of the payday he would get for it! Cotto's to risky, full stop!

Interesting reading, but i find this quote from the author a little bemusing:
Sure'ly Mayweather and anyone else with a brain realises a fight with Cotto before De La Hoya in September would only help to increase his bank balance, current standing, fan base, fans respect etc etc plus help to promote the De La Hoya rematch!Whatever one may think of Mayweather it is doubtful that he truly fears Cotto. Mayweather’s situation, indeed his top priority, is now concerned only with making as much money as he can.

Floyd is in it for money and nothing else that is why he will fight a return with De La Hoya. Oscar is the biggest cash cow in boxing. Even Steve Forbes is earning money he could only dream of a few weeks ago when he faces Oscar.ALI wrote:Here's a link to a feature on Cotto that was put up on Second's Out today:

You've missed my point Chris........... a fight with Cotto before the De La Hoya fight would sure'ly only help to increase Mayweather's bank balance, reputation, legacy, and also help to promote the rematch with De La Hoya. Unless, of course, he was to loose to Cotto!chris s wrote:Floyd is in it for money and nothing else that is why he will fight a return with De La Hoya. Oscar is the biggest cash cow in boxing. Probably not worth the risk

Think everyone's forgetting that Floyd's got to get past a certain Mr 'Big Show' at Wrestlemania XXIV soon! That's the biggest fight of his life right there.
If Show falls on him you can forget about Mayweather vs Cotto, and I think him getting $20m for that kind of 'fight', kind of gives you an idea why he might not want to take on Cotto.
Dangerous though, because if he does get slammed properly he could get hurt!... which would be hilarious!

A fight with Cotto is irrelevant, it will do nothing to enhance the matchup. Floyd and Oscar was the most watched PPV in history for chrissakes. Why does he need to fight Cotto to enhance it?ALI wrote:You've missed my point Chris........... a fight with Cotto before the De La Hoya fight would sure'ly only help to increase Mayweather's bank balance, reputation, legacy, and also help to promote the rematch with De La Hoya. I'd love to see Floyd take on Cotto, but it will probably never happen.

Anyone who turned down $40m in facing Delahoya to take $15m to face Cotto would be mad. Its simply about profit, if anything Delahoya has the more imposing style
When Mayweather wasn't talking a rematch who was Cotto going after, Mayweather or Delahoya? Delahoya ofcourse
Oh and Mayweathers ducking Cotto yet offered him a fight several times in 2005? Arrum didn't want the fight
Mayweather-Cotto will happen and maybe at the end of 2008 or early 2009. Mayweathers waiting for Cotto to build up more support and for more people to pay for the fight

You might be right about that James, but answer me this, would a win over Cotto (could have been this April/May for example) have a negative effect on the De La Hoya rematch, or his bank balance, or his reputation, or his legacy....... not a chance of Floyd was to win! He'd have bagged a few million in the process, plus won over most of his detractors that say he's dodging Cotto.jamesmcdonnell wrote:A fight with Cotto is irrelevant, it will do nothing to enhance the matchup. I'm not one of these fools claiming Floyd's 'terrified' of fighting Cotto, but i do think he see's Cotto as to big a risk to his zero. He's dodging him, i'm convinced of it.

What if Mayweather turns down Delahoya calls Cotto and Cotto steals his place in facing Delahoya? What if Delahoya loses before Mayweather gets the rematch? What if Cotto gets more popular and the fight becomes biggerALI wrote:You might be right about that James, but answer me this, would a win over Cotto (could have been this April/May for example) have a negative effect on the De La Hoya rematch, or his bank balance, or his reputation, or his legacy....... not a chance of Floyd was to win! I think Mayweather is thinking smart

Makes no sense whatsoever to have two big fights like that back to back.ALI wrote:Could Mayweather not have fought Cotto this April/May?Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Anyone who turned down $40m in facing Delahoya to take $15m to face Cotto would be mad. Mayweather was allowed to get away with all sorts against Hatton. He has a knack with getting away with holding the forearm out like a shield, much the same way Ali used to get away with pulling a guy's head down. He's very clever. (and I'm not on the 'Hatton would've won if it weren't for the ref bandwagon before I get slated).
It's like holding and hitting without actually doing any holding. You watch. Larry Holmes used to do it by holding his hand out and get away with it.
He uses it to push the other guy off, then slams him with right hands. It's really bad and If I was a ref would be one of the first things I told him to cut out in his dressing room before a fight. It's played a big part in a lot of his wins.
He's still a great fighter though. Just pointing out something he's very good at getting away with.[/i]

Where on earth do you get that opinion from....... perhaps you mean within such close proximity? Had Mayweather lined up Cotto for April/May, the De La Hoya fight could have been set for November/December.
The two biggest fights of Mayweathers career were only 6 months apart..... De La Hoya and then Hatton, so i dont get your point at all!
Anyway, i was only airing a point, i just dont like the fact that Mayweather refuses to fight Cotto, aims to have only 1 fight in 2008, and will now 'speculatively' fight Hatton in the summer of 2009. Cotto is the real danger man to Mayweather and there is no better time for them to fight than right now. A lot can change over a year or two in boxing, there's a very good chance that we will never get to see them fight, or not at there physical peaks, and that will tar Mayweathers legacy big time, at least in my opinion anyway! If this guy is to retire as one of the greatest boxers ever to lace on gloves, then i want to see him do it on merit!
