Actually he fought for five countries. Paliani is form Georgia which was a part of the former Soviet Union. He won the European Junior Championships for the USSR in 1990. At the Barcelona Olympics some states (the Baltic countries) had left the the USSR and they competed as the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States). Paliani won a bronze at those Olympics. The following year he fought for his origin country Georgia and won a bronze at the World Championships. Then he fought for Russia for a couple of years, I'd guess it was better economic support in Russia. Also his former junior coach Nikolay Hromow now coached the Russian National team.Povetkin wrote:Why did he compete for three countries?
Paliani started competing for Turkey in 1998. I'm not sure how things were but I believe the turks have bought several boxers like Nurhan Suleymanoglu (from Kazakhstan), Malik Beyleroglu (from Azerbaijan), etc.
