Does Gomez have any chance of pulling of the upset vs Cotto?

As you have already eluded to - Gomez is strong, guttsy and very brave - I suspect Cotto to win this fight by no later than the 8th.

If Cotto goes for it early - then the fight will be over very quickly - but why take risks when there are some massive money making fights just around the corner.

One think that makes me unsure about this fight is that I've not seen Gomez hurt before. In the Contender he never looked in any trouble. I doubt Gomez could hurt Cotto, but he could definitely last the distance.

Not much. Gomez is a decent fighter, who is busy and good to watch but Cotto looks unbelievably strong at WW and I agree with a stoppage around the 8th for him. Gomez could be too brave for his own good in this one and take a harsh beating. I don't really agree Gomez is a world class fighter, he got this shot through name only really.

Yeah, I don't think very many people would call Gomez World class. I'm just worried about the amount of upsets we've had so far this year.

I'm sure this won't be one of them although anything can happen with this sport. I'll definitely be watching it and both fighters styles should gel well, but i'm more interested in who Cotto fights next tbh.

I actually think Gomez has a better chance than peole think.

IN FACT....Gomez on points might be a good bet.

He has fought the bigger fighters and he is tough.

I agree but those bigger fighters that Gomez did fight are very average indeed compared to Cotto's opposition.

True, I just think Gomez is busy and tough - if he can take Cottos punches he might stand and fight up close.

Gomez is nothing if not tough and gritty.

To Cotto - this is a marking tuim fight, to Gomez its the biggest chance of his life.

I've heard that Cotto has had trouble training lately as he has ingrowing hairs in his knee, plus I think Gomez is a very strong Welter. With Cotto's chin, you just don't know.

It's been a funny period for upsets (Spinks, Diaz and Lee).

Gomez is a brave guy and seems to have improved even further since he was on the contender but Cotto's just going to be too good for him.It should be an entertaining fight though

I've been impressed with Gomez' improvement since the contender. His long straight shots against Gatti were a nice new facet.

I think he is certainly fringe world class but if feel a little sorry for him going in against the strongest Welter out.
He pointed out in an interview that he will be Cotto's biggest opponent - a natural WW. He's beaten guys that have fought as high as Super Middle whereas Miguel has only ever fought guys who started their career at Light Welter or lower.

I think Gomez has the skills and toughness to keep it competitve and hear the final bell. I just hope the likeable fella doesn't have to cop a career shortening beating.

Cotto will win, no doubts at all.

Even a poor version of Cotto will trump Gomez. Different class.

Gomez does indeed have guts, but Cotto doesn't lack in this department either. He's had to dig deep on several occasions against better boxers than Gomez.

whilst I wouldn't go that far (because I rate JC higher than Cotto and think his style is less attritional so more likely to result in an early win against an overmatched opponent) I do figure that Gomez should be saying his prayers...

Cotto to win by KO by body shots. Gomez is always a bit thick around the tummy. Having said that- Gomez has heart and you can never look past that.
