i have been to many elton gigs thru the years and never seen any of the greats of boxing in the crowd. this may be because of the lack of boxing references in eltons catalogue which amounts to one; "philadelphia freedom" which is obviously based on the life of the great (philly) jack o'brien. when elton and the boys were recording this track (1975) the producer was not happy with the snare drum sound and suggested getting jack along to the studio to help out. this he agreed to do and they rigged up a heavy bag and a microphone which o'brien belted in time to the music!
everyone was over the moon with the resulting "snare" sound and champagne flowed well into the night. (its only a rumour but i have heard they recorded the b-side completely rat-assed with a new "snare" sound created by philiadelphia jack o'brien, gloved up, whacking eltons bare backside, which had a crudely drawn face of stanley ketchell covering both cheeks, for all he was worth for the 3 minute length of the song).
