Willie Limmond - World Title??

Post by Spud »

Willie Limmond is clearly a GOOD domestic class boxer who has done okay for himself - but at domestic level - what do you guys think of the article below:

Limmond - World Title

The only way to find out is to try. Willie Limond fought a brilliant fight against Amir Khan. I haven't seen any of his other fights, but based on just that one I'd say he has a chance.

Personally I treat the IBO title in lower regards than the Lonsdale belt and the European or Commonwealth titles. So he has every chance of winning it.

IBo is becoming a more respected title lately (Klitschko, Donaire, Hatton and Tarver).

Hopefully this could give Willie a decent US pay day.

the IBO is becoming a more prestigiouse belt to hold. willie just wants more fights and if its defending a belt youv worked so hard to get then its a bonus ad give willie a really good chance against any lightweight in europe and has said before that he would take a rematch with khan in a heartbeat :box:

Unfortunately, whilst the IBO has some decent champions... they've tended to have won one of the big 4 first of all. They might reliquish the big title but then the fact that they have kept the IBO title gets ignored.

Barrera was another one.... the fact that Hamed vs Calvo was a world title fight got ignored.

Guys like Limond are the boxers I feel the most sorry for in the sport.

They are clearly talented but just don't have enough to make a real living. Guys as good as this shouldn't need to be part time and work other jobs. It just shows us the divide in cash between the top guys and the nearly men, Limond is the latter.

I think he can win the ibo he would probably beat thaxton, johansson also.

I would like to see him fight kevin mitchell

please, all this talk about 'IBO being a more prestigious belt' is bollocks guys. the ibo 'title' being held by anyone half decent is still not relevant to anything, and i don't see why it would be here...

I think Willie has a better punch than his record shows or people give him credit for. Khan was a lucky boy to have won that night. Glad to see him back winning and by a wide margin against a good opponent. If Willie was to get the IBO belt, whats the betting Khan would be first in line to challenge him. A great way for Willie to get the rematch and maybe revenge plus a nice payday. Wouldnt that be a winner for Willie and no doubt Scotland would have an early Hogmanay.

Disagree with that :TU:
Warren doesn't touch the IBO. Would be more chance of rematch if Limmond won the WBU.

Hang on a second-- So Limond gets stopped by a prospect in a Commonwealth title fight, wins a decision over an unranked boxer and now he's going to fight for a "world title".

Doesn't this totally devalue the already shaky IBO belt?

If anyone thinks we'll be calling Willie Limond a world champion they must be smoking!

Pointless thread, the IBO title is meaningless and makes nobody into a world champion!

Now if he was fighting for the ICO world title i could see what you were getting at

ibo may be meaningless in terms of world title status but it gives opportunities to fighters to earn some hard earned cash so i say go for it willie,he will under no illusion hes the best in the worl anyway,

I have to admit I know very little about this sort of thing, but personally I'd have thought his pay would not be much greater in an IBO title fight than not. Ok he'd get paid for 12 rounds, but the IBO is taking a significant chunk off Hughes in sanctioning, and the opponent's pay will be bigger too. In return they get to put world title fight on the poster and maybe a couple of inches in the paper. Worthwhile short/medium term move? I'm not so sure.

Long term, if Hughes was committed to the investment, then Limmond could find himself a world ranking with 3 or 4 defences, as the IBO despite being as prestigious as a wooden spoon at a steel utensil convention, does have policies in place to make sure the opponent is at least live - no Bobby Gunn's are going to kreep in there.

I'd personally have thought an EU title or IBF I/C title (the latter seem to love IBO champions) would be more cost-effective. But then, and this is the infuriating part, I hate all this nonsense, but don't want Limmond to go down as a nobody. Yes we all would rather he had a Lonsdale or European title above the mantlepiece when he retires, but this is a wa, slow and costly albeit, of perhaps getting a big title shot and a good payday.

Bottom line is Willie got stopped in a Commonwealth title fight, wouldn't have any chance v Romanov for the European title, so he should be aiming for the British belt right now. Not going for some paper belt that holds no weight.

Gettin stopped by Khan is no great shame. I think saying he stands NO CHANCE against Romanov on that basis is a bit harsh.

He'd be the underdog - but compare Limonds performance vs Khan to Earl's.

Bottom line is khan got stopped from limmond in a commonwealth title fight and the ref gave khan a gift when he was clearly counted out, willie is a class operator who is tough as nails, beats thaxton and romonav.

Tough as nails? Didn't he pull out on his stool when nothing was wrong with him. Plus i dont recall any long count controversy in this fight.

'Tough as nails' is something i equate with Jerry Quarry, George Foreman types.

Overhand_ right will downplay Limond's abilities as he is a fanatical Khan-hater :D
