Why is Zou Shiming at 51kg?

He has moved up weight, dont think Team China want him staying there but think he is having trouble making 48 kg. There was also press reports that he might have to stay at 51 kg, so not sure what happens at Olympics?

Zou Shiming won gold at Feliks Stamm Memorial - Warsaw, Poland - March 12-15 2008 at 51 kg. He did manage to beat European Champion Georgiy Balakshin 20:12 and Ukraine Georgi Chigaev 27:11. So seems to be competing well at that weight.

I dont make these things up :TU:

Shiming fights mostly at 51 kg at minor tournaments but of course for the Olympics he will have to make 48 kg as he qualified at that weight.

Wow, I hadn't heard that. But there is no way he doesn't fight in the Olympics - they will bring him down to 48kg if they have to cut off one of his arms (which he doesn't need as much as his feet).

If it were my ratings, I'd keep him at 48kg since that's his Olympic qualified weight, but they're not, so :TU: for posting these.

Though Shiming qualified in Chicago at 48kg, doesn't the host country get a full team in the Olympics without having to qualify? If so, they could put him at 51kg.

No, I don't think so. China was guaranteed six spots and has already filled them, so I believe they have no additional guarantees and no fighter can be simply replaced by another Chinese fighter. At least that's how I read the guidelines.
